  1. Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman has waived his no-trade clause and a deal is in place to move him to the New York Yankees, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Friday.

The Berkman deal likely will be completed before Saturday's trade deadline. The Astros will pick up $4 million of the $7 million owed to Berkman this year and in his 2011 option, sources said.

The Yankees will send two prospects to the Astros: reliever Mark Melancon and infielder Jimmy Paredes.

  2. Victorino is on the DL, dude. And I don't think Utley has come back off of yet. And Werth, more than likely, will be dealt. If they are gonna bring up this Brown kid, there's no way they are bringing him up to sit.

Right I know Utley and Victorino are on the DL. That's what I'm saying, if they can all get back to hitting how they should, they could be very dangerous. I should've included that in my original post.

Roy Oswalt has officially accepted his proposed trade to the Philadelphia Phillies, a baseball source familiar with the discussions said Thursday.

A source said after considering his options and speaking with friends familiar with the Phillies' situation, the Houston Astros' staff ace waived his no-trade clause in order to be dealt to Philadelphia.

The Astros will pay $11 million of the approximately $23 million that the 32-year-old right-hander is guaranteed through 2011, sources said.

Oswalt did not demand that his 2012 mutual option for $16 million be picked up by the Phillies, a baseball source told ESPN.com's Amy K. Nelson. Instead, if either he or the Phillies chose not to pick it up, his $1 million buyout will increase to $2 million.

  4. As you alude, it really is a matter of how you measure success.

To phrase the question another way, how would you rather the next 15 years of the Redskins (or your baseball team, etc.) to play out:

2 Titles, 2 of 15 playoff seasons, .480 W-L record over the span

1 Title, 11 of 15 playoff seasons, .580 W-L record over the span

Aside: Imagine if the Marlins spent like the Braves...and actually retained their stars...

Yeah it really is a tough question to answer. I mean ultimately you want your team to win titles, but you want them to be competitive at the same time. I mean I'd take 2 titles in 15 years, but I'd also want a team that is good year in and year out.

If the Marlins actually kept those guys, who knows how many more titles they have. As soon as they win one, they rip apart the team. Seems like a strange strategy, but it works for them I guess.

  5. Ok so this was brought up in the Nats thread:

Since 1993, which franchise has been more successful, the Marlins or the Braves?

Marlins-- 1,333-1,453 2 World Series Titles, 2 Playoff appearances, 6 winning seasons, 0 division titles

Braves--1,617-1,168 1 World Series Title, 11 playoff appearances, 15 winning seaons, 12 division titles

So if you go by WS wins, its the Marlins. But overall success its the Braves. So which would you rather have? A team that gets hot every few years and wins, or a team that is consistently good, but doesn't always win the big one?

  6. So why are the Phillies trying to trade Werth and get Oswalt? The Phillies problems most of the season have been hitting. Their pitching is pretty solid and Hamels has been pitching well lately. They just can't score any runs, so why trade one of your best hitters?

  7. I admit I was a fan of Escobar as well I as kind of disappointed we let him go especially since we traded Elvis Andrus away because of him. I think we ended up trading him because of some behind the scenes problems with his attitude in the locker room. I mean the guy has beefed with Bobby Cox of all managers on numerous occasions and gotten benched a few times. It's almost as if he didn't care that the team was winning if he wasn't doing good and it has affected his play on defense too which is unacceptable with his talent.

Yeah he has definitely underachieved this season. He did seem to be picking it up a little bit lately though.

  8. We gave them Jo-Jo Reyes too thank the lord! We have been trying to trade him for about 3 years now I can't believe someone took him. Also the deal includes two top 20 Blue Jays prospects to the Braves. What a trade 0 HR shortstop for a 17 HR shortstop.

I think the Jays got a good deal getting Escobar, I've always liked him, but he's having a down year this year. Alex Gonzalez is too streaky for me.
