  1. I’m impressed you found an article. I was just going year by year for each category to see when the names matched. I’ve always been fascinated with baseball stats. I haven’t gotten into a lot of the fancy new stats, but the historical stats and seeing who did what and how impressive it was always fascinates me.
  2. What's crazy about that is while Klein led the NL in those categories, the AL HR and steals leaders outdid him by a good bit. Jimmy Foxx then of the Philadelphia As hit 58 homers in 1932 and Ben Chapman of the Yankees had 38 steals that year. I did find where Ty Cobb led all of baseball in 1909 in homers and steals. 76 steals and a whopping 9 home runs. The NL leaders that year were Red Murray of the Giants with 7 Hrs and Bob Bescher of the Reds with 54 steals.
  3. I completely agree, although I’m biased since I grew up listening to Miller on the radio. When I was sent to bed as a kid, I would turn my radio to WTOP and listen to the Orioles as I went to sleep. Whenever we were in the car, we’d have the game on. Then in the 90s, he was the voice of Sunday night baseball which became the game of the week at that time. When I was in college, those games were always must see TV. The man is a legend and a top 5 all time baseball announcer. The fact that he’s not still on nationally is a travesty. Maybe he doesn’t want to have to do it anymore and he’s enjoying the easy life in San Francisco. Vin Scully is undoubtedly the best living baseball voice and in my opinion Miller is second.
  4. The best part of the mic'd up players was when Buck was trying to talk to Lindor and Lindor was ignoring him talking to everyone else on the field. That was a picture of how America reacts when Joe Buck speaks. Just ignore him like he's not even talking.
  5. I remember hearing this in the 90s. I think it was Greg Maddux who said it then. Whether the balls were juiced then or not, the players were most certainly juiced and every one was ignoring it. I've always believed pitchers were juicing as well, but other than a handful of guys you couldn't really tell as easily as with batters blasting home runs. Even pitchers who weren't using it, they were benefiting from teammates who were juicing. I think a lot of people wanted to believe Maddux because it kept people from talking about the obvious of the juiced players. It wouldn't surprise me if the same thing is going on now. Having said that, what does it matter if MLB is changing the baseballs? If the same balls are being used for all teams, then it's not giving an advantage to one team over another. I feel the same way when players complain about balls flying out of certain ballparks. If both teams are playing with the same set of rules, then the game is fair for both teams.
  6. Brady hit Edelman for a TD. It’s 17-13 late in the game. We’ve all seen this movie. We know who will win.
  7. I know this isn't the thread for this, but why would he even be that far out of the goal? I'm sure something like that rarely happens, but is being up out of the box really providing his team value? Can he really make a play from there that is more valuable than being back to stop a goal that should never happen?
  8. It's kind of funny reading through this thread. A lot of people are giving evidence as to why bitcoin isn't a good investment. A few are saying what a great investment it is, but give no facts or evidence. They just keep saying "Invest and make money. If you don't invest money, you will miss out." Someone mentioned a ponzi scheme earlier, and I'm not saying it is a ponzi scheme, but the people who invest in it sound just like people who have invested in a ponzi scheme. They just look for other people to put in more money so they make more money. They don't explain the product behind the investment, how it can sustain growth, or even what your investment is really getting you. Just put more money in and you'll make money. I don't know how many people have asked me in the past to just join their company to become a partner in whatever it was they were doing. It was basically a new variation of a ponzi scheme, but find ways to make them legal or sound like an actual business. This reminds me so much of that. It all just sounds like an investment in hype.
  9. You must have read my mind. I was thinking the same thing.
  10. I don't know much about him either other than a few videos I saw of him playing. But it seems like he was regarded as the best player in the draft. So it's good they took him.
  11. I never thought Cashner would have gotten the win after giving up 5 in the first inning. What a way to respond. Also, GIvens coming in and pitching a scoreless inning. Good job by him. 11 of his 14 pitches were strikes.
  12. At home! It's sad but that's quite an achievement based on how the pitching has been this year.
  13. Good bounce back today after the tough losses in Colorado. And that Villar HR was absolutely crushed.
  14. It was a game they probably shouldn't have won. It was a great comeback. But when they bring in Givens in a save situation these days, just chalk it up as a loss. As far as Mancini, I don't know if they would trade him. The point of the rebuild is to find good young players and keep them. Whether Mancini is still around when they are able to get this things turned around is another story.
  15. There is a reason Givens is still on this team. He didn’t have any trade value as a reliever. I think most teams knew he couldn’t be counted on when it mattered.
  16. They should, yes. But they don’t always. Plus, most of these guys were probably the best players on their team. They could get away with throwing to the wrong base because they could throw guys out. And their mistakes didn’t always hurt them like they do in the pros. But I think it’s also wrong to assume they all know what to do. I remember a story from the days when Hargrove was managing. They were working on run downs and were doing it wrong. Cal Ripken starts explains to some of the younger guys how to properly execute a run down. Hargrove stops practice and tells Cal to explain it to the whole team. I think the term he used was something like “I think we could all use a refresher.” Now, Cal was a unique player and was the guy that every time would make the right play. He’s a coaches son and Cal Sr made sure he and Billy would always make the right play. But what i got from that story that happened almost 20 years ago is that you can’t just assume that players who make it to the pros always know the right plays to make. A lot of them do, but not all of them. It’s why you have pitching coaches and hitting coaches and bench coaches to work with different positions. They need to be working with these guys, especially a team full of young guys. They can’t just assume these guys know what to do in every situation once they reach the bigs. If the coaches do assume they know this stuff, that’s not good for the future because you aren’t helping develop these guys into great players.
  17. It wasn’t that long ago that the Orioles were one of the best defensive teams in baseball. And yes, having Machado makes a huge difference. Also Jones was in his prime and Schoop who was underrated as a defensive 2B and steady Eddie JJ Hardy, that was a rock solid defense. But sometimes it’s not always being spectacular at defense that wins games. It’s making the plays you need to make. It’s being smart with where you throw the ball. That’s the type of stuff that frustrates me. And this is where a manager can help. He can teach these guys where to throw the ball. When to throw to this base or that base. We will see if Hyde can teach these guys to make the right play and not always try for the spectacular play, especially when you have no shot at the so-called spectacular one.
  18. Good to see the O's get a win last night. Also, I went to Lowes today and saw they had the Orioles yard flags out. It's funny because here in NC, I see Orioles stuff all the time. I love it!
  19. I forgot that was their first game. What an omen that was.
  20. Until it costs them a playoff series, it won’t matter. If the same thing happens in a game they would have won otherwise in the playoffs and they go on to lose the series, then things will be even.
  21. I got back from the Caps game in time to see Rickard get the hit to win it. At least I had one thing to celebrate tonight.
  22. There is no downside to Cowan declaring. It will let him see what he needs to do. Unless he has a huge year this year, I don’t see him even getting drafted next year. Fernando on the other hand, I still expect him to stay in the draft. Although it seems like his stock has fallen some. I think that’s more about the other guys who have declared than it is Fernando. But it seems in mock drafts yes fallen a bit. That all could change after the combine though.
  23. I missed the game today. I think I’ve watched them all since the record breaker. I’m just glad it’s over with.
  24. He should break through wearing a Yuck the Fankees shirt on.
  25. Dang. I though Davis had a hit but it was off the handle and just floated into the shift. The funny thing was you could see the look of relief in the pitchers face because I’m sure he thought it was a hit at first too.
