The qualifications for the Comeback Player of the Year are nebulous to start with, so let’s dispense with any overthinking and give the damn award to Brian Robinson Jr. The rookie running back was shot twice in the leg during an attempted robbery in August, made it back to the field in October, and, at the end of November, looks like the physical difference-maker the Commanders thought they were getting when they made him a third-round pick last April. On Sunday, Robinson registered his first 100-yard rushing performance and added a truck-stick receiving touchdown in a dramatic win over the Falcons. It's not as if they hadn't been winning close ones all season -- their record and negative point differential (-7) spell that out pretty clearly. But narrow, hard-fought wins over the Jags in Week 7 and the Texans in Week 10, along with a two-TD loss to the Seahawks in Week 8, seemed to change the trajectory of this surprising team. Those games had a different feel than tight victories over the Titans in Week 1, Packers in Week 5 and Ravens in Week 6. Injuries have been a big part of the recent swoon, and the Giants should be getting a little healthier here soon. But Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley have been a bit quiet lately as defenses have been able to key in on the quarterback and running back, with so few other threats on the field alongside them. Defensively, the Giants have been kind of hanging on for dear life, especially against some of the more potent offenses they've faced. If they can't get better at stopping the run, you can almost forget about a big playoff showing. This season undoubtedly has been a success for first-year head coach Brian Daboll and his staff. The Giants have looked competent and creative offensively and have been far more competitive than expected. They've been within one score in the fourth quarter of every game except against the Lions. But it's not hard to see the gradual slide back to the middle that's been underway for about a month now, right as the Commanders have risen up as the team that could take their place in the NFC East standings.
  7. If the Giants beat the Eagles during our bye week, yes, we would have the same record (8-5). But then they would lose to us the following week lol...so we'd be a game ahead of them AND hold the tiebreaker. They'd have to win 2 more games than us with 3 weeks to go. That's a steep hill for the Giants to climb. But also, both the Commanders and the Giants can make the playoffs, so even if they do it, that doesn't eliminate us. Winning these next two games would create a ****load of breathing room.
  8. Not being able to overcome a 3 point deficit isn't nitpicking. Every team--EVERY TEAM--falls behind, has mistakes, endures hurdles. Especially in the post-season. Saying that the inability to overcome any of that is not important is...baffling, to say the least. I might even be able to find a post from you criticizing Smith back then for the very thing you claim is unimportant now lol...
  9. I'm not reading into any statistic...I'm not even talking about wins and losses. I'm commenting on how it's not really true that 2018 Smith and 2022 Heinicke played largely the same. The ability to overcome deficits and mistakes is wildly important, regardless of whether or not it results in wins.
  10. In 2018 (the year you posted stats for), if the team fell behind 3-0 on the first drive, it was a guaranteed loss. I'm not exaggerating for effect...the team was guaranteed to lose in that scenario if Smith was behind center. It was a massive criticism aimed towards Alex Smith on this site by fans. The same can in no way be said of the 2022 team with Heinicke behind center. To me, that says Smith and Heinicke have not played largely the same, at all. The 2022 team with Heinicke regularly overcomes adversity...the 2018 team with Smith literally never did, even once. It might be why players tend to say things like they feel like they always have a chance with Heinicke.
  11. The other difference is that the box score doesn't show how Smith was incapable of overcoming even the smallest deficits and lead the team to a win--or even just to take the lead in a loss--as where Heinicke seems to do so in almost every game.

I liked your post and it reflects some of the things I was saying this past offseason about Heinicke actually being able to improve due to his insanely limited playing time in the 4 years before starting in 2021. But I'm not really on board with seeing guys like McLaurin have their primes wasted trying to see if the QB can (might) improve. I'd much rather have a younger drafted QB with a higher ceiling that the coaches and front office strongly believe can improve, instead of an older QB who they want to see if he can improve.
