Why the slide:

Quote
During the 2016 college football season, the best player in the nation was Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen. He dominated at the point of attack all year and was the best player on a defense filled with NFL talent. Allen totaled 62 tackles, 15 for a loss, 9.5 sacks, two passes batted and one interception returned 75 yards for a touchdown in 2016. It wasn't his first season of great play either, as he could have been a first-round pick after his junior year, in which he recorded 36 tackles with 14.5 for a loss, 12 sacks, two forced fumbles and four passes batted. After his years of production and overwhelming play in the SEC, Allen was a consensus top-10 pick and often was projected into the top five. Thus, it was surprising when he fell into the teens of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Sources say there were a few reasons why Allen slid. One was the medical concerns with his shoulders after having two labrum repairs in the past three years. Some team sources from playoff teams who thought Allen should have gone higher said Allen also could have slid some because he isn't a player who looks great working out in shorts. He's a player who stands out in games with live hitting rather than being a workout warrior. Some team sources felt that Allen is already physically maxed out and what you are seeing is what you are getting, suggesting a lack of upside.

Here's how one team source explained it, "Allen was more appreciated than loved because he requires minimal resources to get production from him. Also having two quarterbacks go in the top-10 and then another in the early teens pushed a number of guys down."

The Washington Redskins ended Allen's slide at pick No. 17, and that was a great landing spot for him. The Redskins planned on a defense-heavy draft to upgrade their talent level on that side of the ball, but to come away with one of the top-five players in the draft with 17th-overall pick is pure robbery. Washington wanted to get younger and faster on the defensive line, and Allen definitely helps accomplish the goal. He is an impact-making defender at the point of attack with the speed to fire by guards and the strength to shed blocks. Allen is also consistent with getting to the quarterback, producing over 20 sacks across the past two seasons. He is strong at the point of attack with developed technique as a run stuffer and pass-rusher.

Allen will fit perfectly as a five-technique defensive end in the Redskins' 3-4 defense. In the pass-rushing package, he can move to the inside to rush over guards and will provide an immediate impact as an interior pass-rusher. The Redskins got one of the biggest steals in the first round with Allen. I think he went to a great team, and with Ryan Kerrigan next to him, it wouldn't surprise me if Allen ends up being a big producer for Washington.
