Coles has told the Skins he no longer wants to be in its plans.

Suddenly, the team's passing game is in deeper trouble than it was when the season ended, which hardly seems possible. Rod Gardner has been told he's not in the team's plans.

Laveranues Coles has told the team he no longer wants to be in its plans. Joe Gibbs says he's happy to go into next season with James Thrash and Taylor Jacobs as his starting wideouts.

That he said that with a straight face is rather remarkable. Thrash is a valuable member of the squad, but his value is as a special team player and in the work ethic he displays for young players. He's limited as a receiver. He has excellent straight-ahead speed, but he is not particularly elusive and doesn't come out of his breaks with any exceptional quickness. He doesn't scare a defense.

Jacobs has potential, but he's a No.3 receiver at best. He does run good patterns, but he has just average speed. His biggest obstacle is developing the confidence he needs to be a frontline receiver. If Coles does not return -- and even if he does, he and Gibbs will not exactly be a match made in heaven -- the team will have to find a quality wide receiver.

To do so in free agency will be costly, but some cap room might be made if Coles foregoes part of his bonus money. Gibbs had said Plaxico Burress was too expensive for the Redskins, but his name might be back in the mix now.

Darnerien McCants can't find it too comforting that when Gibbs listed his possible starters next season, McCants was not included. McCants has not lacked for opportunities with the team. His biggest one might be about to appear. If he doesn't take advantage of this one, he can count on playing elsewhere next season. . . .

Tackle Jon Jansen's rehab has gone well, and he should be on the field for the team's first minicamp. He probably will have his workload limited, at least until training camp opens. Jansen's impact on the offensive line's performance will be significant. He not only solidifies the right side of the line, but he sets a tone with his aggressive, physical style of play. His ability to control defensive ends should provide more running room for Clinton Portis and give Patrick Ramsey a sense of security, which he did not have last season.

DRAFT BUZZ: No one should expect the team to make a draft decision solely on the basis of need. Gibbs never has been particularly taken with the idea of using rookies extensively on offense. Even if a wide receiver is available at the No. 9 pick, the team isn't going to take him unless he's at the top of the draft board and Gibbs is certain he's mature and seasoned enough to start immediately. Rookies on defense are more palatable to Gibbs, so even if a wide receiver is an area of need on draft day, it will not be surprising if the team opts to take a pass rusher or even a big defensive tackle. The defense is not so good that a quality player will not make it better. The idea of a trade never should be discounted. If Gibbs can get a proven player who can help immediately, he will be tempted to go in that direction.

Coles can shut his trap and lace up his shoes, his contract guaranteed him nothing but the signing bonus, not winning, not a coach that he would love, just a fat check for signing and he got it, now he needs to shut up and play.

I thought there was an interview, or at least a direct qoute. This article is nothing but old news. We still haven't heard anything from Coles directly.

Nothing to see here.

Maybe Coles has seen the light, especially with the signing of Rabach!;)

No we're not. Gardner had a chance to show he could be the guy...couldn't/woudn't/didn't do it. Coles has zero leverage. He can ***** all he wants. Unless he wants to sit and beg burger king money from relatives, he'll play in B&G unless the Jets or someone else panics and makes us a great offer. And 5 games in, if Coles stays, we'll be picking up steam and starting to move the ball through the air, and he'll stop whining and pouting. Pierce is a nice player, but he's not the 2nd coming. Williams will plug that hole adequately. We're not going from a top 5 defense to a bottom 5 one because we lose one solid player. ALL teams lose solid players every single year. We don't usually notice because we're too busy rolling around in a mass of free-agent orgiastic glee.

We're going to be fine. Its early. We keep ignoring the obvious - even with Patrick throwing the ball, and Coles and Gardner in there full-time, we've never been better than average offensively...never surpassed 8 wins. How can you say we're falling apart? I really wouldn't be that concerned if we DID go with Thrash, Jacobs, and McCants...I'd like to see what those guys could do with a Ramsey truly comfortable in Gibbs system and getting great protection with Jansen back and Rabach at center - not to mention Clinton taking a lot of the pressure off.
