Alabama State senate passes bill banning lab-grown meat

 

State senators passed Senate Bill 23 to prohibit the manufacturing, sale, or distribution of food products grown from cultured animal cells in Alabama.

 

The bill provides criminal and administrative penalties for violations.

 

Anyone who manufactures, sells, offers to sell, or distributes any cultivated product from cultured animal cells would face a Class C misdemeanor.

 

If convicted, a food sales establishment that sells or distributes lab-grown meat may have its food safety permit revoked and would be subject to all enforcement measures under the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Part of me wants to watch Republicans attempt to reconcile:  

 

"California can not be permitted to pass its own pollution or fuel economy laws, because our nation must have only one standard nationwide"

 

And

 

"Alabama can absolutely completely ban possession of a product their legislature doesn't want people to have."

 

But then it's not like they're famous for intellectual consistency.
