The federal government has introduced legislation to add the non-consensual sharing of intimate images and extortion to the list of offences that could land someone on the National Sex Offender Registry.

The addition was highlighted in a statementon Wednesday, ahead of a scheduled press conference at 4 p.m. from Justice Minister David Lametti and Women, Gender Equality and Youth Minister Marci Ien.

The law is so far behind the Wild West that is the internet… but this is first I’ve heard of anything like this.

 

Interesting approach. I’d love to hear the community’s thoughts.

 

And man, I didn’t even know how to start a new thread. It’s probably been over a decade. Crazy.

I’m not sure I’m in favor of this.  This is the list of crimes that puts someone on the sex offender registry in VA

  • forcible sodomy
  • object sexual penetration
  • sexual battery
  • sexual contact with a victim under 13
    possession of child pornography
  • producing, distributing, or financing child pornography


I’m just not seeing non consensual sharing as belonging on this list. It should be a crime but this list was controversial and aimed at protecting the community from some of the very worst offenders that may present a very real danger to others. I’m hesitant to see it expanded at all.

Agreed.  There do need to be repercussions, but sex offenders list is both too strong of a cudgel and this also waters down the meaning of the list.
