Gannon's season is over

Alameda, California-AP -- Last season's N-F-L M-V-P won't finish this season. Oakland quarterback Rich Gannon will have surgery on a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder and miss the rest of the year.

The Oakland Raiders placed him on injured reserve today.

The 37-year-old quarterback tried to throw yesterday for the first time since getting knocked out of a game on October 20th. Coach Bill Callahan says he could raise his arm, but couldn't release the ball.

Gannon previously had shoulder surgery after his 1993 season with Washington. He missed all of the 1994 season and then was released by the Redskins.

With backup Marques Tuiasosopo (too-ee-ah-soh-SOH'-poh) also out for the year, Rick Mirer will be the starter for the last seven games.
