NFL | Martin Drawing Interest - posted at KFFL (nfl.kffl.com)
13:23 PT: KFFL has learned free agent DT Steve Martin (Jets) is becoming a popular guy on the free agent market. The Washington Redskins, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans have all expressed a solid interest in him thus far.

move him outside to end. In the 3-4 you need bigger guys on the flanks to hold the point and engage blockers and Wilkinson is quick enough to play DE in the NFL.

I think if you do see a change to the 3-4 and the signing of a NT, that will indicated that either Bruce Smith or Marco Coleman won't be back in 2002.

If I had to guess I think Coleman would be released June 1.

unfortunately, Carolina has a former DC as Head Coach and probably more dollars to throw at Martin than we do. Of course being on a 2-14 'expansion' team may not be that appealing to a guy who was in the playoffs this past year.

The 49ers are also a strong challenger with a 12-4 record and a team of mostly younger up and coming players. I don't know what their cap situation is, but I suppose they have decided if they are going to lose Garrison Hearst and Lance Schulters then they ARE going to go after someone to replace Bryant Young at DT, as he is moving out to DE for 2002.

I think he's being brought in because not onluy is he a wide load, he's a two gap player. I mentioned earlier in the week that he's one of two DT's I would like to see brought in (Cannida was the other). He's big, shouldn't cost a lot, and might be a great fit in a 4-3 scheme.

His biggest drawback is that he's only played two full seasons in a 7 year career.

It's becoming apparent that Lewis likes his linebackers to make plays, and want his D linemen to set them up and protect them from the blocking, rather than have an attacking D line and use the linebackers to plug any gaps.

Wilkinson showed last year that he was well suited for that role (the Marty/Kurt system is similar to Lewis's in some respects). If you could find another DT that can take on multiple blockers, then that frees up attacking LBs like Lavar and Armstead to apply some real pressure.

So it's not automatic that by looking at Martin, we would be going to a 3-4 defense, instead, it might be that Lewis prefers 2 gap linemen in the middle.

Big Daddy got alot of penetration despite the double teams and adding a guy like Martin also mean that the Defensive ends face one on one matchups.

I see nothing wrong with cutting Coleman after june if we Leverette surprises us, we draft a DE or K Lang puts down the glue and signs a cap friendly deal.

The Skins are showing they aren't going to re-sign any of the high profile free agents they had on the 2001 roster.

The Armstead signing means no return for Barber.

The Anthony signing and the anticipated run for Green, Jackson, etc...means that Westbrook is not in the team's plans either.

The interest in Martin shows that the Skins are making plans to do without Lang in 2002.

I think Mendes, Cerrato and Lewis determined that Barber and Lang are 'nice to have' rather than 'must have' players for the defense and the team is not going to engage in their own fantasy delusions of multi-million bonuses.

I can't remember the last time I saw a DL with 4 sacks in 16 games ask for a $10 million bonus.

The only players on the Skins with that kind of money in bonus dollars are Arrington and Samuels, who are both 23 years old and made the pro bowl as second year players.

Lang hasn't come close to making the grade at either DE or DT to be put in that elite company.

Concerning the yahoo stats mentioned above:

I think I'd consider 98 to be a complete season (in the absence of other info). Playing 10 games while changing teams mid-season ain't a black mark. (Why'd he change mid-season?)

Isn't 57 tackles a lot for a nose tackle? I thought their job was to soak up blockers so other people could make tackles.

Why so many teams?
