Redskins, Cowboys Underway

From Staff and Wire Reports

Sunday, November 2, 2003; 6:01 PM

IRVING, Texas -- Troy Hambrick has scored after the Redskins, one of the NFL's most-penalized teams, gave the Cowboys an extra chance following a penalty, and Dallas leads Washington, 7-6, at halftime.

The Redskins' Antonio Pierce was called for unsportsmanlike conduct on a Dallas field-goal attempt. The call gave the Cowboys a first and goal at Washington's 2. Hambrick scored two plays later.

Patrick Ramsey is taking a beating again, and was taken to the locker room with about a minute left in the first half. Backup Tim Hasselbeck came in for a one play.

The Cowboys have turned the ball over four times, and have had two touchdowns called back by penalties. The Redskins capitalized on the third Dallas turnover with 8:43 left in the first quarter when Patrick Ramsey found Laveranues Coles for the touchdown. Dallas' Flozell Adams got a hand on John Hall's kick, and Washington had a 6-0 lead early.

Chad Morton, who had 37 yards on the ground in the first quarter, had to leave the game with an injury early in the second. Cornerback Fred Smoot, who had been listed as doubtful, has played some.

In spite of the Dallas miscues, the Redskins are not moving the ball much and are having familiar problems with protecting Ramsey (four sacks for 43 yards lost) and with penalties (five for 37 yards).

Late in the first quarter, Quincy Carter found Terry Glenn for an apparent 35-yard touchdown but it was called back by a motion penalty on tight end Jason Witten.

Earlier, the Cowboys won the toss and Derek Ross took the opening kickoff back 100 yards but it was called back by a holding penalty. Carter was picked off by Matt Bowen two plays later, but the Redskins couldn't move and punted.

After a 12-yard run, Hambrick fumbled to open Dallas' next series, with LaVar Arrington recovering for Washington. The call was challenged but upheld and the Redskins had decent field position at their own 41.

Ramsey got sacked on a flea-flicker, then got sacked on third down and the Redskins punted again, then punted again after offsetting penalties (Washington's first of the game).

The Cowboys turned the ball over again on their next possession, when a pass to Glenn bounced off his knee into the arms of Ifeanyi Ohalete, who ran 30 yards to the Dallas 6. The Redskins scored two plays later.

The pressure is clearly intensifying around Steve Spurrier, who is 10-13 as Redskins coach after accepting a five-year, $25 million contract from Snyder.

After a 3-1 start this season, Snyder was thinking playoffs. But a three-game losing streak has dropped the Redskins behind the hated Cowboys in the NFC East heading into Sunday's meeting at Texas Stadium.

Spurrier said he would walk away after his third season if he was not successful in the NFL. But that departure may be hastened if the Redskins finish last in the NFC East in 2003.

Lets see for all the problems it is still only 7-6

We stunk the first half in Atlanta, we stunk up the first half against the Giants, and tied the game, we stunk the first half against Philly and almost came back.

I am not giving up yet. I just hope ramsey is getting a left hand brace at worst, and no broken hand.

Isn't this more like the Buccs game though?...

Why is it EVERYONE and their brothers and sisters on TV talk about our sorry pass protection. But everyone here blames Ramsey.

Hasselbeck will throw 3 picks and get sacked 4 times in the second half. Mark my words. And then we can discuss the problems he's having because he doesn't know the system and BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH! It's the OL and the blocking schemes. PERIOD!

We have to run the ball 60% of the time. This is still a close game although we should be losing by 3 td's. Run the damn ball already. Everytime Ramsey drops back I just shudder thinking this is his last snap this season. The "O" line and "D" line are F'in terrible. The Te's and RB's can't block either. I don't care what anyone says or thinks. This team is not and will not be a playoff team this year. They do not deserve to take the damn field. Spurrier better beat the crap out of these guys at halftime. I would pull out a skunk and let it spray the players. Let them wallow in the stench of there performances.
