Robert Carter Jr. could be a factor in Maryland basketball’s NCAA title hopes

Robert Carter Jr. was on edge during a pickup game earlier this month, running around an empty Xfinity Center with his Maryland basketball teammates as if he were playing in front of thousands of fans in the middle of the season.

“We gotta get a stop!” Carter screamed as the game came down to the wire, a loud and almost desperate command from the transfer player who has quietly remained in the background for much of the past year.

In that time, Maryland enjoyed a basketball renaissance and transformed itself into a national power with a headline-grabbing offseason. The Terrapins returned to the national rankings and the NCAA tournament. Blue-chip center recruit Diamond Stone and Duke transfer Rasheed Sulaimon joined the program, and standouts Melo Trimble and Jake Layman announced they would return for the 2015-16 season rather than enter the NBA draft. Carter’s arrival from Georgia Tech, a bright spot in a 2014 offseason notable for concern over the state of the program, was overshadowed.

But Carter’s time on the sideline could be the key to his own transformation.

He improved his physique and found his voice during a sometimes lonely year of patient discipline as he sat out under NCAA transfer rules. Already known as a freakish athlete with an NBA future, Carter also has a mean streak and a blossoming maturity that could help Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon deal with chemistry on a roster loaded with individual talent and facing gaudy expectations.

Oregon of the East? Maryland hopes branding leads to recruiting success

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Most of the top quarterbacks in the 2016 recruiting class made up their minds about which colleges they plan to attend before the end of spring football. By May 1, nine of the class’s top 10 signal-callers, according to Rivals.com, had issued verbal commitments. Maryland viewed the lone outlier, Dwayne Haskins Jr., as one of its recruiting priorities. A star at the Bullis School in Potomac, Md., Haskins threw for more than 1,900 yards with 22 touchdowns and five interceptions and was named Maryland’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior. His arm strength, accuracy and ability to keep plays alive drew upwards of 30 scholarship offers, including from Florida StateNotre Dame and Ohio State.

Terrapins fans hoped Haskins would spurn overtures from several more high-profile programs in favor of a picking nearby school that hasn’t won more than seven games since the 2010 season. On May 15, after narrowing his list to six schools (Florida, Maryland, Notre Dame, Penn StateRutgers and Virginia Tech), Haskins announced that he had verbally committed to Maryland.

Haskins’s pledge was considered a massive victory for the Terps’ local recruiting efforts. In the bigger picture, it inspired optimism that better quarterback play could elevate a program that has endured inconsistency at the position in recent years.

In an interview about three weeks after committing, while discussing Maryland’s recruiting pitch, Haskins explained that—at least in one respect—some prospects think the school resembles Oregon. “Just what Oregon, the person that founded Nike (Phil Knight) went to Oregon and he definitely supports them with new jerseys and new apparel. So, same thing with Kevin Plank. He does a lot [with] Under Armour for Maryland,” Haskins said.

The comparison may seem far-fetched, particularly in the win-loss column, but the similarities between the two programs can’t be ignored when assessing Maryland’s attempts to attract top prospects to College Park. Can the Terps model themselves as the Oregon of the East in a push to further their recruiting efforts?

Maryland Teams Dominate Penn State, Rutgers First Year in the Big Ten Conference

July 1 marked the one-year anniversary of Maryland and Rutgers officially joining the Big Ten Conference.

Together, with Penn State they make a three-team enclave in the conference. The Eastern front, as it were.

For the first time, the three East Coast schools were in the same league at the same time in the same sports.

And, in head-to-head-to-head competition among the three schools, Maryland was in a league of its own.

In its first season in the Big Ten, the Terps won three out of every four games it played against Penn State and Rutgers. In 2014-15, the Terps’ men and women’s teams were a combined 28-9 against Penn State and Rutgers, for a winning percentage of .757.

Penn State was a combined 19-17 (.528) against Maryland and Rutgers, while Rutgers was a woeful 7-28 (.200) vs. Maryland and Penn State. (All results ware in head-to-head play, with the exception in gymnastics tri-meets, and included postseason play.)

Maryland dominated the Big Two revenue-producing sports – football and men’s basketball – as the Terps had an overwhelming 5-1 record against the Nittany Lions and the Scarlet Knights. Maryland beat Penn State in football (20-19) and twice in a pair of basketball nail-biters (64-58, 76-73). In addition, Maryland defeated Rutgers twice in men’s basketball, but lost 41-38 in football after wasting a 25-point lead.

To me, that kind of quote comes off a bit silly.  Great programs don't aim to become some other school.  Maryland is reaping a growing list of successes by being Maryland.

but that quote is 100% true. UA is doing the same exact thing to MD as nike did for MD.

Only the passage of time will tell how just exact that comparison turns out to be.

In the meantime I think it would be supremely foolish to aim for exactly what that quote says: Maryland trying to "model themselves as the Oregon of the East in a push to further their recruiting efforts."  I see Maryland as (e.g.) a basketball program with a national championship that happened during recruits' lifetimes, a program which certainly could win another.  Not to diminish what Oregon has done, but what sense does it make to recruit in the "exact" model of a program that has not accomplished that much since the Great Depression?  Should Maryland aim for recruits who only grow the program to that level?  Or should Maryland aim to do even better?

As a fan, I think I know what most fans' answers would be to that question.

Telling recruits Maryland is the "Oregon of the East" had better be immediately followed by "...Except with better results once we get there."

Which means that isn't what Maryland is aiming for at all -- despite leveraging a similar relationship to Oregon's to get there.

Trying to "become" someone else is a fool's game and a very inexact notion.  Hopefully, Maryland's goal is to make Oregon wish they were the Maryland of the West.

It will be real interesting to see how Maryland handles being the hunted. Terps were picked to finish 10th in the Big Ten last year. Won 28.

Early prediction on Maryland's starting five --- Melo Trimble, Rasheed Suliamon, Jake Layman, Robert Carter, Diamond Stone....

A big difference in Maryland this year versus last? Jaylen Brantley. Will play a key role as Melo Trimble's backup at point guard.

Dion Wiley is down 15 pounds since the end of last season -- looks like a different player. Could be a key scorer in reserve for Maryland.

Palpable buzz at Maryland surrounding GT transfer Robert Carter. Terrific feet defensively. Will allow Terps to switch on ball screens.

Maryland's rotation may be like a rubik's cube early. Terps are better than most 1-10, but which lineups work and which don't are TBD.

Diamond Stone allows Maryland to not as be as guard heavy on offense. Provides a legitimate low post threat. Gets to FT line. Good hands.

Mark Turgeon told @CBSSports he plans to also use Rasheed Suliamon in spurts at point guard for Maryland. Will play multiple spots.

Curious to see who winds up "closing out" games for Maryland. Terps were at their best last year with Jake Layman at PF. Small ball again?

I read an article about Big 12 expansion. I have an interest in it to see if maybe they will want my Alma Mater, Memphis in (longshot) and the author of the article (I lost it and now can't find it) was saying it is in the best interest of the Big 12 to expand from 10 to 14 instead of 12 and start a Big 12 Network and force Texas to give up their Longhorns Network.

He was saying that with the addition of MD and Rutgers, the payout for all Big 10 teams was 32 million, 12 million more that Florida State got in the ACC.  Now, with that said, MD and Rutgers aren't eligible for a full share until 2021 (offset by giving the 2 schoold travel stipends) and Nebraska will get their first full share in 2017.

So, we would be getting 12 million more per year than we would in the ACC and they are projecting with the new Big 10 TV deal, it could be near 45 million in 2 years.

I'm curious what the temperature was around Maryland boards about Haskins floating the idea of visiting Florida?  You think he's having second thoughts?  Everything he's been saying publicly up till then sounds great, but let's be honest, this whole "movement" thing hasn't really panned out the way it was planned, not yet at least.  There's been no traction in Virginia, one kid out of D.C., and another Maryland kid decided to head up to PA this past weekend.  I wonder if he's getting frustrated.

Diggs' choice between Maryland or Alabama is going to be huge.
