CZAR: Spurrier's job in serious trouble

BY JOHN CZARNECKI

After only 23 games, Steve Spurrier has nine games in which to prove to himself and to Redskins owner Daniel Snyder that his Fun 'n Gun offense can succeed. If he fails miserably, Snyder might not have any other choice than to fire Spurrier. Let's face it, the $25 million marriage definitely isn't working.

I told Cowboys coach Bill Parcells on Saturday that Spurrier's plight is all his fault. He laughed.

The rationale?

Well, it is driving Snyder nuts that Parcells has the Cowboys in first place with a 5-1 record when everyone said Dallas had the weakest personnel in the NFC East. The so-called experts thought Washington might have a shot at the playoffs this season with all the personnel moves Snyder and personnel director Vinny Cerrato made in the off-season.

It was Snyder's idea to give Joe Bugel a call and examine the pass-blocking schemes of Redskins assistant Kim Helton and Spurrier. Snyder wanted to know if they were sound or not. Or if his high-priced talent was simply missing blocks.

The answer was a little of both.

But the bottom line is that Snyder is frustrated with Spurrier's lack of instant success and the players' seemingly lack of respect for the ol' ball coach.

More NFL dirt from the Czar

Spurrier's reaction to all this ownership second-guessing is to simply return to his familiar intermediate and deep passing patterns. He'll ask quarterback Patrick Ramsey to take five- and seven-step drops and go deep. No more conservative play.

"We've been handcuffed," Spurrier said. "We need to get back to our original plan of offense. We need to get back to that. Hopefully, we'll start doing that."

And if that doesn't work, the next thing Spurrier and Snyder probably will be working on is a buyout of the remaining $15 million left on his contract.

Hmmm, let me think how much credibility this deserves.....

Snyder said last week he fully supports Spurrier and believes the coach will turn around the season. But Snyder does not intend to dismiss Spurrier after the season even if the club continues to struggle, sources said Sunday, and many in the organization believe some further roster maneuvers could leave the Redskins well-positioned to be a top contender next season. People familiar with Saturday's discussions between Spurrier and Snyder described them as cordial and productive.

NONE, I think it's a case of another national meditiot trying to pile on despite the Skins moving on.
