Stampeders sign former NFL wide receiver Albert Connell

May 19, 2003

CALGARY (CP) - The Calgary Stampeders signed former NFL wide receiver Albert Connell on Monday. Connell was originally drafted by the Washington Redskins in the fourth round of the 1997 NFL draft.

After four seasons with the Redskins, the six-foot, 184-pounder signed a free-agent contract with the New Orleans Saints.

Connell was cut by New Orleans last December after being accused of stealing $4,363 from teammate Deuce McAllister. The charges later were dropped when Connell returned the money and McAllister told authorities that he would not press.

The five-year NFL veteran had over 1,000 yards receiving with the Redskins in 1999.

"Albert is an experienced proven receiver at the NFL level and will bring big play capability to our receiving corps," said Calgary head coach Jim Barker.
