I didn't even know he was on pace to catch Jim Browns record but Charles barely missed the most yards per rushing attempt of 6.4 set in 63' by .02 yards.

Chiefs' Charles comes within .02 yards of setting NFL record

The distance is only 0.72 inches. If Jamaal Charles(notes) of the Kansas City Chiefs had gained that much more per carry this season, he'd have unseated an NFL legend in the record books.

The explosive Chiefs running back finished with 6.38 yards per rush this season, an average which left him narrowly behind Jim Brown's record of 6.4 yards per carry, set in 1963. (Other ball carriers have finished with higher averages -- Michael Vick(notes) ran for 8.4 yards per attempt in 2006 and 6.8 this season -- but not as running backs.)

That's a difference of .02 yards, .06 feet, 0.72 inches, 1.88 centimeters or 18 millimeters. It's less than the length of the "return" key on your keyboard.

[Related: Patriots set incredible records in 2010 season]

Over the course of the season, Charles would have needed five more total yards on his 230 carries to set the mark. Five yards over a season. That's nothing. As we saw Sunday night in Seattle, the difference between a few yards can be as simple as where the official spots the football. Charles was thisclose to setting the record.

Sure, it's not a flashy one and is only well-known because the legendary Brown had the mark but, regardless, ousting a Hall of Famer from the record books would have been a nice achievement for Charles and the Chiefs offensive line. (It also might have drawn more attention to the fact that Kansas City only handed the ball to the efficient Charles 230 times. I'm all for limiting carries to prevent injury, but someone running for over 6 yards per carry should be getting it more than 14 times a game.)

[Another record: NFL kicker reaches milestone]

As the Kansas City Star pointed out, Charles temporarily had the record during Sunday's loss to the Oakland Raiders, but lost it when he was stuffed for a 1-yard loss with 7:55 remaining. He didn't have another carry for the rest of the afternoon.

hardly anyone knew....best kept secret of the NFL "Jamaal charles is Good".......

After seeing the Ravens play live and knowing how jacked up they will be (thanks to Ray Lewis) to hold Charles to under 100, its going to be a rough go of it for KC in the run game, then again, if Cassel has time to throw, they (KC) will have a ton of success in the passing game and wont need to run much......This is fixin to be a good game on wild card weekend, where most of us think, its 4 dud's of a game.......

I've been picking KC for the win all week (so far) but i am starting to reverse that though, and this is now looking to be a 26-23 Ravens win

Balto's defense isn't as consistent as it used to be. KC will have some opportunities.

very VERY true. Ray still plays at a high level....Suggs is having a great year. J.Johnson is a nice player, Ngata is the best at his position, and Ed Reed is always around the football. He has played within the system the last 3-4 games and has about 4 picks to show for it, When he freelances...and he will.......he is a huge liability.

Their CB's are God Awful at times.....and Landry is not very good. KC will indeed have chances to score in this game. This is not one of those Ravens Defenses, that you can be confident that KC will score 10 or less.....it could happen, but i would NOT bet on it. 26-23 one way or the other............:)

I would imagine Jim Brown had a heck of a lot more carries than Jamaal but still quite an accomplishment.

291 for Jim Brown, 230 for Jamaal...

thats 61 more (not to be to redundant)

of course Jim Brown played in a 14 game schedule then.

that would be (2) TWO more games then Jamaal.......who played in a 16 game schedule in 2010......

Not to be too redundant

You know, I thought Charles was a bigger back than he is when he came out of Texas. UT usually has bigger backs in the mold of Ricky Williams types.

yea your right, a different mold of back! The kid can run, thats for sure. Very VERY fast...one thing you will notice to, the KC line can open up some holes. What a really good job that staff has done in the past couple of years.
