nonniey
Intereint pictures. In a sense I guess the Soviets really did bomb them back to the Dark Ages. http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/05/27/once_upon_a_time_in_afghanistan?page=full Click Link to view the photos. On a recent trip to Afghanistan, British Defense Secretary Liam Fox drew fire for calling it "a broken 13th-century country." The most common objection was not that he was wrong, but that he was overly blunt. He's hardly the first Westerner to label Afghanistan as medieval. Former Blackwater CEO Erik Prince recently described the country as inhabited by "barbarians" with "a 1200 A.D. mentality." Many assume that's all Afghanistan has ever been -- an ungovernable land where chaos is carved into the hills. Given the images people see on TV and the headlines written about Afghanistan over the past three decades of war, many conclude the country never made it out of the Middle Ages..... SkinsHokieFan
Intereint pictures. In a sense I guess the Soviets really did bomb them back to the Dark Ages... They got bombed back into it, and the abandoned muhjadeen kept it there after 1989. 30 years since the invasion and we are still living with the blowback with the lives of Americans being lost there everyday now You think a Mullah Omar would emerge in 1950s Afghanistan? Or an Osama Bin Laden would find refuge there? The 1950s-60s Muslim world was far more progressive then what it is today. A few decades of war, coups, sanctions, invasions have set it back centuries
visionary
Sad to see how much the country changed for the worse. Although I admit that I foolishly assumed that the country had just never progressed much from the tribal days of Britain and the Kyber pass and all that. Destino
amazing what extremist groups can do isn't it? The soviets almost brought the world to nuclear winter and the extreme religious nuts in Afghanistan have forced a nation into the dark ages. DeanCollins
At what point do you look at the lack of leadership amongst the people themselves? (A good question to ask in the US these days as well)
