During the last NFL strike, I had an argument with somebody who was complaining about how ridiculous it was that John Elway (then the highest paid man in sports, at $4M/year) was going on strike, when he didn't deserve the money he was getting already, all he'd done was lose four Super Bowls.

My response was that the reason John Elway makes $4M/year was because he had a contract that said so.

That, at the bottom of that contract were two signatures: John Elway and whoever owned the Broncos.

I pointed out that I don't even know the name of the guy who owns the Broncos, but it's a pretty safe bet that he's a millionaire.

And he thinks John Elway is worth $4M/year. And it's his money.

I would have to agree. You or I may or may not think that Bristol Palin or John Elway are worth the money they get but at the end of the day, we don't have to. The only one who has to think they are is the person who signs the checks.

To the sub-theme of this thread-

I've always believed that the notion that money is an accurate guage of a person's intellect or merit is one of the more dangerous concepts too many have.

I mean do you really want Tiger Woods as your marriage counselor?

Or Bristol Palin to advise your kids on abstinence?

Agreed. Possession of money is hardly an expression of capability.

Does anyone think that Paris Hilton is a genius because she's got a lot of [inherited] money?

If it was really just about the money, I'm sure she could skip those $15-30K paydays and just go the way of the former Tiger Woods' mistress that is considering posing for a magazine.

One payday like that probably means no work for a couple of years.

I'm not condoning or putting down either option. I'm just pointing out that there are options if money is the bottom line.
