Redskins Sign OL Paul Fanaika of Eagles PS

Recommended Posts

is alridge still available?

we could use the last open spots to fill it with him.

I was thinking that as well. Twice against the Cowboys Rock (who played his heart out...) got chased down by a LB or a DE, where a guy with speed would have taken it to the house. One time it was old man Brookings, for crying out loud!!!!!

I dont no if this has been mentioned or not if it has im sorry can a mod delete this. But does anyone have any info on this guy. How is he what are his strengths and Weaknesses. Also is he a OT or OG. thanks

May turn out ot be a good move. The Eagles are one of the teams that are generally pretty good at spotting OL talent.

Nice payback for snagging Antonio Dixon earlier in the year. If nothing else the kid'll be pumped big time for info on the Eagles incl. snap counts, audibles, tendencies etc.

Of course that didn't work out so well when we tried it with Andre Woodson against the Giants in week one.

It's probably more about developing than spotting the OL talent. Guys with size and raw ability who can be coached up.

The Skins know what the Eagles do, and the Eagles know what the Skins do. There's not much mystery. No one brings in a player off someone's practice squad to be a "spy". If the Eagles have to change a snap count or two, it's no big deal.

Heres a scouting report on him:

Fanaika ended his collegiate career as one of the best offensive guards in the Pac-10 conference. After walking on in 2004 and redshirting that season, he earned playing time the following year on an injury-decimated line. He was eventually awarded a scholarship in 2006, when he helped block for Ryan Torain, who became the Sun Devils' first 1,000-yard rusher since 2001. In the ensuing season, Fanaika contributed blocking for to a running attack that boasted a 100-yard rusher in six games. Those campaigns earned him back-to-back All-Pac-10 honorable mentions. While his college coaches praise his natural strength and knowledge of the game, scouts are more intrigued by Fanaika's combination of size, foot speed and grit. Despite all this NFL potential, teams may still struggle to find a place for him. Some feel Fanaika - a three-year starter at right guard - may have a problem matching up against shorter defensive tackles. Others agree he might be a better fit at right tackle, where his frame will be particularly beneficial, but his lateral speed is a bit suspect and he doesn't have any experience outside. Fanaika could go in the later rounds of the draft.

Maybe history will repeat itself?

A couple of things just to throw out:

He was a teammate of Tryon, but I have no idea how well they knew each other. Tryon graduated in 2008, Fanaica in 2009. Both Arizona guys.

This is another of Vinny's attempts to prove you don't need to spend high draft picks on OL, something he has alway believed in. Vinny, rightly or wrongly, has aways felt you don't spend high draft picks on OL. He hs always felt you get big guys, coach them up and then you have all you need for an OL. Obviously, this is another "cheap as you can get 'em" addition to the OL. Maybe he finally gets his miracle that proves he was right all along. I mean, can Vinny fail worse than he has already building an OLine?

Give the kid a chance. At this point, he can't be any worse than Vinny's other OL picks.

Gosh.... you people are hard to please.

Everyones complaining about linemen, they go grab one to take a look at, and you all scream.

Yeah, he's obviously not a pro-bowl player, and may not even be an NFL caliber player.

but how else are we going to build a new OL if we don't start grabbing guys and getting looks at them.

You think there's a magical pro-bowl lineman bag just laying around that you can just grab players out of? The secret news is everyone else is going to keep their pro-bowlers. So you have to start with drafted guys or PS guys and find some that stick.

No they don't have to be pro bowl caliber, but they do have to have some quality. DeAnthony Batiste isnt' a starter and even he saw some time this year because of injuries and look how well that turned out for us. If we had actually drafted and put in some work for depth, we wouldn't be scrambling for other people's PS players who we have little to no idea about them. Trust me, we develop players and they go elsewhere and sign for cheaper and come back to haunt us.

Look at Ryan Clark and Antonio Pierce. Both left here because the FO thought that they could develop players on the cheap. They end up leaving here and not really signing for huge dollars, but they go to other organizations and win. We go and get players like Adam Archuletta and they get cut after a year and are running around with our money.

I expect that the Redskins will get some linemen who were well on their way to being out of the league and we will overpay them and they will suck and we will be back at square one. Until we get rid of VC, that is all I can expect our draft strategy to be. React to the holes that come up as oppsed to trying to anticipate them and act accordingly.

Vinny is basically correct.

A lot of good o-linemen in the league were undrafted or were low picks. It's not even close to a miracle when it happens, in fact it's quite routine, but not all of these "projects" are going to be successful, and they do take time and patience and good coaches to develop.

It might take a few years before they are any good. But if you keep developing them, you'll always have more available. And with the way injuries are to offensive linemen in the NFL, you're probably going to need them.

A> Pickins are slim for any kinda OL.

B> Filly had a pretty beat up line going into the season and this guy hung around - maybe just 'cause of no other choice but they did have to keep at least one body and he has been hanging around so there has got to be some flicker there.

C> 327...definite Hog size

No, Vinny didn't use any picks in the last draft on the OL. He's just picking up a 7th rounder from the Eagles for free because 3 Skins OLmen are now on IR and the remaining reserves are suspect. It makes perfect sense to pick up OL men from other teams to try them out. Their practice squad players may be better than our starters (ouch!) or be better than the reserve players currently on the roster.
