RENTON, Wash. (AP) - A person with knowledge of the contract says that the Seattle Seahawks have signed first-round draft choice Aaron Curry to a six-year contract that guarantees him $34 million...

It's richest guarantee for a rookie non-quarterback in NFL history and has a maximum value of $60 million.

Does that make him the highest paid linebacker in the NFL? He missed 8 days of camp to settle the deal.

My god we need a rookie pay scale this is absolutely redic. I understand that the NFL is a rough career and you need to get money when you can but it should emphasize staying in school and getting a degree incase you dont make it in the pros. And you cant tell me someone cant make a living on 20 million dollars compared to 60.

Signing a player that's not practiced one down in full pads and guaranteeing them that much money is absolutely stupid.

Yup. NFL Draft is getting sickening. Friggen awful when older vets can't even get jobs because teams don't want to pay them but they are willing to pay unproven guys that have a small fraction of a chance to be big time players.

What older vets "can't get jobs" because of teams having to pay rookies?

Meanwhile the biggest deals in the league are the older vets, like Haynesworth, the Manning brothers, etc.

As for Curry, he'll be worth it in due time. A stud of a linebacker, he was probably the safest pick in the entire draft, a could very well be the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

No, but he's number 2.. kinda ridiculous.. Suggs has a 63 million dollar deal
And then, of course, by this time next season he'll be about the 4th or 5th best paid LB in the league. And then if he puts up Pro Bowl worthy numbers (which is very possible given his talent and the division he plays in), in two years nobody will look back at this deal with an ounce of care.

You mean players who have established themselves and proved their worth?

He sure SOUNDS like it. But that always pans out. After all, Robert Gallery was also a lock.

He sure SOUNDS like it. But that always pans out. After all' date=' Robert Gallery was also a lock.[/quote'] Gallery's turned into arguably a Pro Bowl guard in Oakland. Sure, not the elite tackle they were looking for, but he hasn't been cast out of the league like a certain tackle we currently have on our roster as a reclamation project.

Rookie contracts are a little ridiculous, but they're not team cap killers either. San Francisco signed #1 pick Alex Smith, for 24 million guaranteed with about 57 million total for the highest rookie deal ever. Just a couple years later they then signed Nate Clements to the largest deal for a defender ever, at 8 years, 80 million, with 23 million guaranteed. They've been bad to mediocre in that span, but because of poor coaching and other bum players, not because of cap restrictions due to Smith.

Skins fans are quick to point out how we can sign a guy like Haynesworth for huge dollars, but also how that money's not a true reflection of the contract value and in a few years it won't be as much as the newer deals. Well as I said earlier, in a year, nobody will be talking about Curry's or Stafford's deals, as veterans are already getting new contracts that eclipse those.

Another thing not considered in all the talk about rookie deals is the amount of value teams get in signing a young, premiere rookie LT or QB for the franchise. They could bust, sure, but I'm sure the Falcons don't care what they paid for Matt Ryan at this point, or the Chargers or Giants for Rivers or Eli in his first deal.
