why? There are many, many, people who dont want to depend on government largesse.

Just because the folks in power feel this is a good thing doesnt mean that intelligent non-elected cattle like us believe it.

You are right, there are many people that don't believe in the stimulus. Hypocrisy is very abundant when it comes to money my friend.

I'd challenge you firmly that not all opposed to it are "hypocrites" on this. There are many from both sides of the aisle that have never supported spending moves like these and have remained steadfast to thier principles.

Though, there are many in the GOP that are hypocritical in this, but the same can be said of the Dems too.

You're missing the point. This stimulus package WILL have to be paid back by the tax payers of each state. A governor who refuses to take the money doesn't exempt the population of the state from paying the debt on the stimulus.

I may not want the stimulus, but I surely won't refuse my share of it since I'll be forced to pay it back anyway.

If I am opposed to the lottery because I believe it's gambling, but a friend gets me a ticket as a gift and I wind up winning 100 million dollars.

I am taking the cash despite my principles. I suspect most states can use the money and few if any would reject it even if they had no needs whatsoever. Look at Alaska.

I agree 100%. I just think when push comes to shove, that citizens will push their respective state legislatures to accept the money.

Paid back or not, it something that will help put money into many people's pockets now to help revive the economy. People won't have to pay in a lump sum.

If I live in Texas and work in the steel industry but have been laid off or can't find work because there are no new construction jobs going on, and I have a family to feed, I sure as hell would want my state to accept this money so they can start new projects which will employee me and put food on my table for my wife and kids. If I have to pay back, fine. But at least I can find some sustainable work and hopefully this will carry over and push the economy out of the recession sooner than later.

I would push to refuse the money only IF it meant our state didn't have to pay the money back. If we refuse the stimulus and California accepts, wouldn't Maryland just be agreeing to pay back California's bail out? That makes no sense.

That's fine. That's the position of the people that say we need the bail out.

But it is not hypocritical for a person or a state to accept a portion of the bail out when they will be forced to pay it back whether or not they wanted it.

You are right. Maryland is one of the top ten states in a budget defecit. This money would certainly help the State, don't you think?

Some will push for and some will push against. It's tough to wrap a whole states demographic into one opinion on it.

Obviously, but it is in my belief that even thoughs who are against will be wanting to accept it. But as pointed out by Mardi Gras, it would be more so because they would have to pay back the money anyways. I suppose it has become a bit of a moot point.

Spending less money on government agencies and reducing out tax burden would help the state and wouldn't require a massive bail out.

There are a ton of projects that will go into effect because of this bailout. Jobs will be created because of this. I agree that reducing the State's tax burden would certainly help. But the bail out is also intended for citizens.

No, actually I enjoy casinos and the like. I am opposed to people who gamble what they can not afford to lose, but that's more like being opposed to stupidity than anything else.

I am opposed to stupidity (excepting my own, of course)

I agree. I find it humorous that the State has the State Lottery stand in the lobby of some of their government buildings. Most of the people who spend money are employees who don't make that much and form a nice long line everyday.
