Cowboys RB Haywood on life support

Ex-Carter standout fell ill early Saturday morning

05/11/2003

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – Cowboys running back Ennis Haywood, a Carter High graduate, was on life support Saturday night at Medical Center of Arlington after falling ill earlier in the day, his sister-in-law said.

Angela Jernigan said Haywood, 24, began vomiting in his sleep about 4 a.m. Saturday. She said he stopped breathing about 6 a.m., prompting the family to call 911.

"We're praying for him," Jernigan said.

A nursing supervisor at the hospital said the family asked no information be released. Officials from the Cowboys could not be reached for comment.

Haywood, an undrafted free agent from Iowa State, made the practice squad last season because the Cowboys liked his size (5-10, 224) and his punishing running style.

He led the team in rushing during preseason with 120 yards on 31 carries, with a long of 36. He also caught two passes for 13 yards.

Haywood participated in the club's three-day mini-camp last week and was expected to compete for a roster spot at halfback.

Haywood, an honor-roll student at Carter with a 3.5 grade-point average, excelled at Iowa State from 1998-2001.

He finished his career fifth on the club's all-time rushing list with 2,862 yards, sixth in touchdowns (27) and second in average yards per carry (5.0). As a senior, he rushed for 1,169 yards and 14 touchdowns to lead the Big 12.

He was 10th in the nation in average yards per game (123.7).

Cause of Haywood's death unknown

Associated Press

DALLAS -- Dallas Cowboys running back Ennis Haywood died Sunday, a day after being placed on life support with an undisclosed illness. He was 23.

Haywood died at Medical Center of Arlington, hospital spokeswoman Diane Stout said.

"The cause of death at this time is unknown,'' she told The Associated Press. She said she doesn't know what Haywood was being treated for.

Haywood was taken to the hospital early Saturday after waking up feeling ill and vomiting, Iowa State director of media relations Tom Kroeschell told The Associated Press on Sunday. Kroeschell said he got the information about the former Cyclones player from the school's football coach, Dan McCarney.

Haywood participated in the Cowboys' three-day minicamp last week and was expected to compete for a roster spot at halfback.

And the last paragraph of the above article:

"Like everyone in the Cyclones' football family, we are shocked and saddened beyond words," McCarney said Sunday. "Ennis was one of the classiest gentlemen there has ever been, on and off the field. He was an unbelievable competitor, and one of the most tenacious football players I've ever been around."

I'm with Tarhog on this one. Were this guy not a Cowboy, would we be speculating about drug use here?

It could be a hundred things that caused this. I'd like to know whether he suffered any trauma injuries in the two to three days prior to this. A slow bleed in the brain due to a concussion for example can cause this very type of outcome.

There are lots of things that could cause this type of sudden event.....ruptured aortic aneurysm, cerebral aneurysm, massive MI.....wouldn't leap to conclusions.....sad news.

Aneurism seems likely, not just because of the swift death, but also the vomiting, which is the only symptom we're aware of. Vomiting is indeed a symptom of an aneurism.

``This is a time to offer support and deepest sympathy to the family,'' Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. ``Our hearts go out to them. This is a tragedy involving a person who was very well-liked and respected by anyone who had the opportunity to know him.''

The Dallas Morning News first reported that Haywood was hospitalized in its Sunday editions. The newspaper said Haywood remained on life support late Saturday and that he had stopped breathing early Saturday.

Sage Rosenfels must be feeling the heavy pain as well. Rosenfels and Haywood were teammates from '98 to '00, back when Sage was the Rage. In fact Sage and Ennis were quite the duo. Here's a couple articles where they connected on big plays :

http://cyclones.ocsn.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/111100aaa.html

"The 2-point conversion failed, but Iowa State took the lead for good when Moses caught a 44-yard TD pass with 4:45 left in the third. Rosenfels hit Haywood on the 2-point try for a 26-20 lead. "

http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/football/games/090200aaa.asp

"Haywood set up the score by turning a swing pass from Rosenfels into a 32-yard gain down the left sideline on third-and-15 from the 38. "

Not only sad, but strange. Wouldnt you think that an NFL player would be one of the last persons to die from an undiagnosed disease, considering all the physicals that they go thru, and there should be several times to catch it.
