skinzzfan25
Changing the defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4 would set the franchise back years. Look at the Jets defense. Back when they had Vilma in a 4-3 he/the whole squad was pretty respected. After switching to a 3-4 and bringing in big name rushers like Pace and Gholston they haven't done jack squat. The 3-4 takes years to build and perfect. Right now we don't have the personnel or the coaching to build a 3-4 defense. Fletcher and Blades would probably be too undersized at ILB. No DT on our team can handle a two gap responsibility already, let alone somebody who could be a serviceable NT (see Ratliff, Ngata, Hampton). Carter would be decent at OLB, but remember, the 49ers let him go because he couldn't produce at that same position. Taylor is old and really played LDE for most of his career. He was only stood up for about a year and a half under Saban. Our secondary is beastly though The only condition I would want a 3-4 run is if Cowher or Rex Ryan walks into Redskins park and kick Vinny & Co. out. It would take a few years of revamping but would look pretty nice in the longer run.
MumboSauce
And this is why you don't get paid in an NFL front office/coach etc. to make any football decisions that matter. Sorry dude. As it stands, with the personnel we have, it would be a disaster. You'd have to blow up the defense, sans a player or two and it'd be 3-5 years probably before it would be any good. The D isn't that far off if you look at what they did despite their deficiencies. A big pocket collapsing DT, and a playmaking linebacker would make a big difference. S4L
We have a 28th or so ranking in our scoring offense and we talk about how to change our 4th ranked defense.
aubreyjn
I prefer the 3-4, personally, but that configuration with the Skins' players would blow donkey balls. i agree. rocky is too small to play in the middle and monty is not very impressive... :dallasuck:eaglesuck:gaintsuck:dallasuck:dallasuck
G-Prime
We don't have the right guys and Andre Carter sucked at LB.. he came into the league as a DE and kicked ass.. San Fran moved him to LB and he sucked.. Then we got him.
RIDETHEWALRUS
I fully believe that Taylor and Carter would be very successful in the 3-4, hell they've proven it in the past. The only issue would be getting the right personnel in there on the line. Our 3 down lineman would HAVE to be better. Carter has proven he is terrible as an OLB in the 3-4 and Taylor will be 35, we shouldn't be scheming around him.
GroundNPound
So with an offence that can't capitalize on turnovers OR good field position...You would rather have more sacks and turnovers, then holding teams to less points?Smart... This is a good point of argument. If your offense isn't very good, field position is in more demand than if you can move the ball down the field. More turnovers would create more scoring opportunity. This can be done very easily, without sacrificing us giving up points. Simply, by improving our pass rush. Even if Carter and Jason Taylor were instructed to play the run, we should have been able to get pressure on their QBs on passing downs... which just never happened. As for switching to the 3-4, we jsut don't have the personel. We don't have a true nose tackle. Daniels and Evans, and maybe even Golston may be good 3-4 DEs, but Carter proved to be ineffective as an OLB in a 3-4 at san-fran. We don't have enough depth at LB to warrant the transition. It's easier to plug in a cheaper LB into a 4-3 and have him support the run, than it is to pick one up on the FA and expect him to blitz, and cover as well. pjfootballer
Get a penetrating DT or two and the defense gets even better, especially on the line.
