FB in the draft this year

Um, maybe you didn't hear? This guy is from West Virginia. Yeah. And he, uh, punts sometimes. Which is cool, I guess.

Schmitt is suggested by some of us because of his versatility. He has a experience as not only a FB but as a TE as well. He would not only be a perfect backup for Sellers, but could backup Cooley as well. His versatility is what makes him an option with our 3rd round pick; not because he played for WVU.

For added discussion

If we were looking for purely a backup fullback, why even use a late round pick on the position? Why not give Lorenzo Alexander a shot at being Sellers backup? He has certainly proven himself as a high-motor versatile player. Just a thought.

The members from WVU have seen him play more than anyone else. How many games have you watched of him? Or are you just regurgitating what Mel Kiper/Mike Mayock says?

I've seen him play, not nearly as much as you, but I have. He's crazy as hell, but considering out far more important needs, he's not worth anything higher than a 4th, and even then, its a push. We would do better to draft depth on the line or DBs. Or perhaps another pass rusher.

]']Not if your a WVU fan. Than Schmitt is worth the 2nd rounder.

i'm a wvu fan and no fullback is worth taking in the 2nd even if it is the beast who breaks defenders facemasks. there are too many holes we need to fill before we worry about a fullback, especially when we have sellers

Top 3 Round Fullbacks in the last few drafts:

Team Player School Rd Sel #

New York Jets B.J. Askew Michigan 3th #85

1999:

Miami Dolphins Rob Konrad Syracuse 2nd #43

Minnesota Vikings Jimm Kleinsasser North Dakota 2nd #44

1996:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Mike Alstott Purdue 2nd #35

Pittsburgh Steelers Jon Witman Penn State 3rd #92

(They was at least one FB drafted high in 1994, 1992, 91, etc going backwards)

I'm all for planning ahead but I think a FB would be a waste of a draft pick this year. Mike Sellars is performing at a high level and still have a few years left in him. Very few teams carry back up fullbacks and a replacement could be taken off the street if necessary.

With needs at backup G, C, T, DT, LB, CB, and S, I think we just have more "future" needs than fullback.
