PACK TAGS WILLIAMS

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Green Bay Packers have applied the franchise tag to defensive tackle Corey Williams.

Williams is the third player to be franchised on Wednesday. The deadline if 4:00 p.m. EST on Thursday.

TRUFANT GETS FRANCHISED

With the deadline for applying the franchise tag less than 24 hours away, more and more teams are using it.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Seahawks have applied the franchise tag to cornerback Marcus Trufant.

The placement of the tag on Trufant and Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha means that Pats cornerback Asante Samuel will be the biggest prize at the cornerback position when free agency opens on February 29.

EXCLUSIVE TAG FOR ASOMUGHA

The Raiders didn't simply apply the franchise tag to cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, they've used the "exclusive" version of the tag, which prevents Asomugha from negotiating with any other teams.

As a result, the tender changes from the average of the five highest-paid cornerbacks based on 2007 cap numbers to the same average based on 2008 cap numbers.

This means that the one-year tender will be worth, at a minimum, $9.8 million. And if someone like Asante Samuel signs a contract with a big 2008 roster bonus in lieu of a big signing bonus, the number will nudge even higher.

HAYNESWORTH TAGGED, TOO

We mentioned earlier in the evening that the Titans will soon apply the franchise tag to defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Actually, they already have.

Haynesworth gets the non-exclusive tag, with a one-year tender of $7.5 million.

Not bad for a guy who 16 months ago took his cleats to another man's face.

As Expected

Didn't Know

As Expected

Actually, I didn't expect the Pack to tag Williams. The list of those players many members here seemed to covet as Free Agents grows shorter. No wonder Vinny said the Skins wouldn't be a big player in FA.

More teams are trying to keep their players which means less players on the open market. That translates into more competition for the remaining players which means they will get absurd money. The skins don't have the cap space to go after big guns. Vinny was right that the skins would be low key players in FA.

I agree with Fred Jones. Teams are getting smarter. They know who they want to keep; these players have been in their locker rooms; the teams know who are good team guys and who are not; they know who they must keep and who are cancers who will be let go. Good, smart teams keep good players.

Sometimes the price becomes too high, and that player is gone. Remember last year's big CB signing? Did anyone see the 49'ers in the playoffs? Was that signing worth it?

You can sign a lot of good, low key, low budget FAs, when the big rush ends.

You nailed it. I don't see us being players in FA this year. I hope we do find some diamonds in the rough though

Player salaries haven't caught up to the huge rise in the cap over the last few years. Just 3 years ago the cap was 85m and few teams had cap room. Now the cap is 116m this year. Most teams are flush with cap room so they can fit players that are franchise tagged. It's not that teams didn't want to franchise their players a few years ago, they just couldn't afford it under the cap, now they can. Player salaries will continue to rise at a ridiculous rate and teams will come closer and closer to the cap each season or over it. I'm sure the PA isn't happy that teams have this much cap room w/ few players to spend it on. Each year teams salaries will get closer to the cap as player's deals are redone and new contracts are signed.
