What to take from '07

Looking back on a playoff season is, as recent history would show, a rare opportunity for Redskins fans. ;) We all know what happened in '06 after the playoff run we had in '05. It's my feeling that we have much more to build upon in '08 than we did back then. For one, we've got an emerging, young QB who's going into his third year in the offense (God willing), and that's something I'm looking forward to with optimism. If it weren't for about 3 overthrown deep balls and a couple bad picks, J-Cam is anointed savior of DC around the country. I'm not worried about him AT ALL. He's the TRUTH. Outside of that position, where do you think the new staff will see the most promise?

It's obvious to me that GW doesn't need the approval of the media or the fans to determine how good his D-Line is. "We need a pass rush! Draft D-Line!" That sounds awfully familiar to last offseason. I thought that the D-Line's strong play was a really pleasant suprise this season. Carter really stepped up his game to give us a little more pressure on the QB, and we have good veteran leadership otherwise (Daniels, Griffin). The two young tackles who contributed the most were Montgomery and Golston, and they look to be legit, especially in the stopping the run. Chris Wilson made some really big plays for us this year, and I like him as a pass-rush specialist. Lorenzo Alexander started here as a D-Lineman, before we started incorporating him into the offense. I've seen a Williams quote that said he's the strongest guy on the whole squad. If we can continue to develop this talent, do we even need to commit big money to a draft pick or FA? Only if it's the right guy, a gamebreaker only.

That being said, I think GW came into last season more than content with his D-Line's pass rush because he knew how dirty our secondary could be, especially with the defense geared to ST. They stopped the run and forced teams to be 1-dimensional, throwing into the 2-Deep coverages that we were using almost exclusively. Sean had 5 picks in that defensive philiosophy before he got hurt. It's a damn shame that he's gone, because I think you would have seen a redefinition of the safety position, and NFL defense in general. LaRon might be able to have a similar impact, but there really only is one Sean Talyor, and he will be sorely missed for years to come.

Judging by the current roster, and the way that this team has been built recently, where do we place emphasis next year? Which units are strongest? Where can we get better? (I'm a believer that we already have the talent to be very good)

if I were the GM I would ignore the 4-0 finish in 2007 and look at this team from the perspective of trying to improve what had been a 5-7 team with significant injury problems to key players.

Clearly, the better depth in 2007 helped save this season the way that the lack thereof sunk the 2006 season.

But this team still needs to get younger and faster at WR, younger and stronger up front on the OL and at DE.

In addition because of the injury to Carlos Rogers and the age of Shawn Springs this club need to find a capable corner to match with Smoot.

I would not look to the draft here, though, I would look at a veteran FA that can come in and play right away.

I would target DE, OL and WR in the draft.

The big thing for me, was the fact the Skins have FINALLY accumulated some depth here. Blades/Godfrey for Rocky.....Smoot for Carlos....I hate to say it, but even Doughty for Sean.... All these did not come without their "hiccups" but seemed to be working well by the end of the season. I truly feel we are getting better with younger, DEEPER talent and we simply need continuity and a few misses to plug in and we will compete with about anyone. Sure the coaching thing could set us back..or it COULD move us forward...Nothing against Gibbs..he's my hero, but this team was built by him and set up for the "next guy". I do know one thing. I will set back and enjoy the hell out of next year NO MATTER WHAT!!! HAIL!

I pretty much agreed with this on another thread...think Nibbs Mc Pimpin was the one who said it there. This is my exact thinking. You and I think alike Bulldog.

DL and OL.

Look at the teams left in it. Then look at their lines and ours.

Skill positions we are fine (ish). We need dominant lines. DE/DT/OG are needed. Depending on price etc I would sign DE in FA, DT/OG via the draft. Reasoning is mainly we need a boost from the LDE immediately but can wait and develope the DT/OG.

If we add these 3 and they work out it changes our team from playoff to contender. Without it it doesn't matter how good our skill players are. If our QB has no time and keeps getting put on his ass and their's has time we will lose. If the positions are reversed we will win. We already have a decent set of players for the skill positions, we now need to sort the lines to allow them to show said skill...

Fabini = 33 years old, going to be 34 entering the 2008 campaign

Jansen = 31 years old *note* birthday on 1/28 will be 32 and injured often

Kendall = 34 years old *note* will be 35 entering the 2008 season

Pucillo = 28 years old *note* will be 29 enter the 2008 season

Rabach = 30 years old *note* turns 31 in early September 2008

Wade = 31 years old *note* turns 32 mid season

Thomas = 32 years old as of 1/19/08 Happy Birthday :) get well soon.

Samuels = 31 years old will be 32 soon

Heyer = 23 YEARS OLD!!

That has to be one of the OLDEST offensive line's in the league with the average player from last season being: 30.2 years old

Samuels 31

Kendall 34

Rabach 30

Fabini 33

Heyer 23

If you were to look at the starters from opening day: 31.4

Samuels = 31

Thomas = 32

Rabach = 30

Fabini = 33

Jansen = 31

The guys we have are GOOD. Damn good when healthy but the fact remains that we are old. Bottom line: We need an Offensive line.

Greg Williams has ignored the Dline because of guys like Taylor. Landry is good, but he is no Taylor. Its time to get some beef on the lines. Look what San Diego did to NE to day. They Intercepted brady at least three times, and a couple of those were caused by pressure, forcing brady to throw the ball without a real clear lane. If we can do that with our Dline our secondary play will be superb.

I really don't think we need a DE like some people here. We need a DE, but I don't want to waste a 1st rounder on a DE. We should draft a WR or a LG in the 1st round.

I'm ok with any pick on the offensive or defensive line. I wouldn't mind a 1st round on a DE if one was good enough. Same with OG. But, I think those can be addressed in the latter rounds of the draft. Same with a WR. Therefore I 'think' the pick will be a CB

First from 2007 the Redskins lost a very special team mate Sean Taylor, and they pulled together and played strong as a team down the stretch. Of course we lost some close games throughout the regular season. It was a tough season. But, looking forward to the 2008 football season, the Skins need to beef up things on the O line.

They have a pretty good defense, just not a heck of a lot of depth.

R.I.P. Sean Taylor, #21
