Good vs Evil

I dislike the Dems because in general they think on a "socialist" level... everyone is entitled to what everyone else has. They are often simplistic thus getting the "dumb" stereo type.

I dislike the GOP because they are much more outspoken in trying to impose their will and ideals on everone else. They often resort to name calling and such, making fun of those who do not think like them.

Rather than the usual name-calling, could you please provide SPECIFICS on what elements of the Contract you deemed so vile as to refer to it as mafia-esque?

i.e.

Were you opposed to (and why):

Welfare Reform (which Clinton signed after the 3rd try)

Line Item Veto

A Vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment

A Vote on Term Limits

OK I will play.

Welfare Reform-was great after Clinton fixed the bad Republican plan.

1. Line Item Veto-I'm against it.

2. Balanced Budget Amendment-Paleze, Republicans only talk the talk on this issue. It took a Democrat to balance the budget! This would never work because there would have to be too many excemptions like war.

3. Term limits-Oh lookie, who's no longer in favor of this now that they have the majority. I'm against it for sure. Let the people decide if they want the person to return. I think it should apply to Presidents too as we might still have Bill Clinton and no terrorism!

Most of the rest of the Contract on America was social conservatism at it's best, for example let's lower the birth of babies born to teens by getting rid of their access to abortions and cutting of aid to the kids once there born. Oh how nice.

Clinton made only token superficial changes to the Republican plan. Give me one significant change Clinton made to the Republican proposal. Please BE SPECIFIC.

1. Line Item Veto-I'm against it. I find that interesting because Clinton endorsed it, even before it was included in the Contract with America. He even stated he wanted it back when he was a candidate in 92. When he got it though, the only things he used it for were a project in Arizona as revenge for McCain criticizing him for not being more bold in its usage, and extra medicare funds for NY City Hospitals.

2. Balanced Budget Amendment-Paleze, Republicans only talk the talk on this issue. It took a Democrat to balance the budget!

Two things.

First - I agree that since Hastert took over the house in 99, the GOP has completely run amok spending-wise and abandoned this stance.

However - Clinton NEVER submitted a balanced budget proposal. He didn't. He was cowered into nearly all the reductions in spending increases by the GOP. Remember the fiscal structure set up by the Constitution - the Prez submits a budget proposal, but all spending bills originate in the house. I have stated in several posts that the current GOP congress is wholly responsible for our current fiscal disaster. Also, the significant increases in revenue came primarily from increases in collections from capital gains following the capital gains tax cut, which was an entirely GOP proposal, and was, I believe, one of the provisions of the contract.

Most of the rest of the Contract on America was social conservatism at it's best, for example let's lower the birth of babies born to teens by getting rid of their access to abortions and cutting of aid to the kids once there born. Oh how nice.

There was NOTHING in the Contract vis a vis abortions! Zippo! The "Personal Responsibility Act" proposed ending welfare payments to minors and not increasing payments for additional children born to mothers already on welfare. Actually, this was taken from NJ welfare reforms enacted under Democrat Jim Florio.

How about the rest of the provisions?

4. THE FAMILY REINFORCEMENT ACT: Child support enforcement, tax incentives for adoption, strengthening rights of parents in their children's education, stronger child pornography laws, and an elderly dependent care tax credit to reinforce the central role of families in American society.

Do you consider that to be radical social conservatism?

-------

6. THE NATIONAL SECURITY RESTORATION ACT: No U.S. troops under U.N. command and restoration of the essential parts of our national security funding to strengthen our national defense and maintain our credibility around the world.

I wasn't that gung-ho about this provision at the time, but I'd be all for it now.

----------

7. THE SENIOR CITIZENS FAIRNESS ACT: Raise the Social Security earnings limit which currently forces seniors out of the work force, repeal the 1993 tax hikes on Social Security benefits and provide tax incentives for private long-term care insurance to let Older Americans keep more of what they have earned over the years.

8. THE JOB CREATION AND WAGE ENHANCEMENT ACT: Small business incentives, capital gains cut and indexation, neutral cost recovery, risk assessment/cost-benefit analysis, strengthening the Regulatory Flexibility Act and unfunded mandate reform to create jobs and raise worker wages. (Bill Text) (Description)

9. THE COMMON SENSE LEGAL REFORM ACT: "Loser pays" laws, reasonable limits on punitive damages and reform of product liability laws to stem the endless tide of litigation.
