Calling Out Greg Williams and the Defense!

I love seeing all of the passion for what will make the Redskins defense play better. Unfortunately, I don't care how many shutdown corners you have, if the defense CANNOT generate a pass rush, the defensive backs will eventually be exposed. Even if we had Deion Sanders in his prime, it will not help so the suggestions to bring in "flopped" 1st round picks and "over the hill" safeties are not justified. The receiver knows where they want to go, whereas the DB is trailing them to prevent the reception. The reason Champ Bailey theoretically looks better in Denver than he did in Washington is because they have better defensive personel, from top to bottom. Simple!

If you really notice, the 'Skins secondary gets burned on plays when we blitz and the heat does not get in. If you blitz, you create man on man coverage downfield. A DB can only cover a receiver for so long and eventually, they will be exposed. The question is how much time is too much?

If an LB blitzes (for instance Marcus Washington), who is responsible for covering the TE and backs? If a safety blitzes (Archuleta or Taylor), who is responsible for the coverage? When we send 5 rushers (blitzing just a safety or LB), do we have the personel to accomplish that task of covering receivers if the heat does not get through?

The answer is an emphatic NO!

All the great defenses in NFL history are dominated by HOF and ALL PRO defensive linemen. Most of the great linebackers are middle linebackers. If you can collapse the pocket with "four" down linemen, the secondary will look beautiful because you don't have to use exotic "packages" to generate heat. Case in point... for instance, look at the Panthers, Bears and Ravens. If you are able to create havoc will your four down linemen, when you "eventually" blitz, it will resemble a page from the '85 Bears defensive playbook.

Blitzing is supposed to be situational... not a normality. IMO, Greg Williams has his defensive philosophy backwards and that is why we are suffering the effects right now with Shawn Springs injured, and searching for answers from the secondary. The problem starts from the D-Line and progresses to GW's defensive playcalling.

Here is my evaluation of the Skins defensive personel:

- Andre Carter - So far, he is not living up to his end of the bargain (yikes... he was definitely not a bargain!) 8 solo tackles. At this rate, we are paying him $1M per tackle!

- Cornelius Griffin - Is he hurt? 10 solo tackles in 5 games is definitely not going to cut it. I give him the benefit of the doubt but he is not bringing the same thunder.

- Joe Salave'a - We know he is hurt but the young buck, Kedric Goldston has played well in his absence. However, we need more production pushing up and clogging the middle so the linebackers can do their jobs of actually "tackling" someone.

- Phillip Daniels - Another under achieving defensive end... SIX solo tackles on the season. What more can you say? Nothing!

- Marcus Washington - the heart and soul of the defense is having to blitz a lot to compensate for the absence of a pass rush. This unfortunately takes away our best playmaking linebacker and makes him one dimensional. In addition, it is adding wear and tear on his body, banging against those huge offensive tackles and tight ends, that by the fourth quarter when we need to make those key stops, he is practically worn down.

- Lemar Marshall - the quarterback of the defense... leads the team in tackles and is playing well. Unfortunately, he is having to make up for MW's absence and Holdman's incompetence and lack of awareness in pass coverage. Many times, I have seen Lemar having to "choose" who to cover because some bum did not know his assignment.

- Warrick Holdman - This guy is a complete liability in the defense. He looks like a deer caught in front of the headlights of a tractor trailor. He can't cover himself even if you gave him a blanket. He is incompetent and GW needs to get the rookie (Rocky McIntosh) in the game immediately. RM can't be worse than this guy, can he? HECK... We gave up two draft picks for him!

- Carlos Rogers - God bless him with some hands this weekend because Vince Young throws a soft ball. The second year corner is finding how difficult life is as a #1 cornerback! This is good for him because I really believe that when Sean Springs returns to full strength, he will be even better for it.

- Kenny "Pass Interference" Wright aka PI - After making some strides (our only DB with an interception... whoopty dooo) he seems to have taken some steps backwards. I can't wait for Sean Springs to return because this will relegate seeing PI exclusively on special teams. Mike Rumph will eventually take his place as the choice nickel corner. Is that saying much?

- Adam Archuleta - What did you guys expect when we got him? He has "4 times" as many sacks as interceptions in his illustrious career! He is a better pass rusher than coverage man. Unfortunately, the primary job of your strong safety is to secure the secondary and support the run. We have it backwards with AA. It is what it is...

- Sean Taylor - When you have a non factor starting on your defense (Holdman), that already puts your secondary at a disadvantage and then when you have two pass coverage liabilities (Holdman + Archuleta) the problems get magnified especially when you don't have Springs. It is too much to ask you free safety to cover a WR man on man... ST is a great player, but putting that type of responsibilty on him is too much to ask for.

Therefore, this is my recommendation:

The D-Line needs to pack their lunch and dinner and play with more fire in their belly. The effort seems to be there but they need to step it up another notch. We need to tone down our blitzing to 25% of the offenses snaps, picking out more strategical situations. WHEN we do blitz, I recommend a 5 man rush (4 D-Linemen + a LB or Archuleta) and we should send no more than 6 pass rushers (4 D-Linemen + a LB + Archuleta). For God's sake, don't telegraph the blitz! You can show 8-9 in the box but it should not mean that they are all coming.

If we send a LB to blitz, send Holdman or McIntosh. MW is our best cover LB. We need him in pass coverage and not as a 3rd down pass rushing specialist, in addition to his other committments. Is the injury to Chris Clemons (released due to season ending knee injury during the preseason) a lot bigger than we are realizing?

BTW... Who designs a defense like this, where a MLB or Safety covers the opposing teams #1 WR?

So Coach Greg Williams... How hard could this be to rectify?

I disagree about Holdman. He has played well enough this season. I completely agree with the telegraphing of blitzes. At the very least, when the Skins do, they should try and audible out of it. Send someone else. Have AA look like he's blitzing, but send Lemar. Stuff like that

Need the cliff notes guy. What is going on in this forum with the novel posts?

I hear you bruh... :D however, I am tired of reading the "WHY's, the DON'T's and the NOT's" with the "WHAT's Happening" but without the analysis and or any solutions.

You got a two for one deal in this post! The bottomline is that we blitz way too much (and use the wrong personel) when our best defenses right now are to sit tight and attack later.

I truly believe this is the best post I've read on this site in at least two years. :applause:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. :notworthy

That's what I am talking about... however, I believe that we should send linebackers that are weak in coverage, like Holdman or use the rook (McIntosh) when blitzing. Using MW or even Lemar takes away a huge awareness factor when it comes to defending the pass and covering TE's or backs out of the backfield.

Holdman is a little better this season, however, I still see too many situations where he gets lost covering his man.

I agree as well, everything except Washington being our best cover LB..... I think Marshall is...but an A anyways. You are essentially saying Springs is the difference.

Springs is part of the difference... but the main issue is that the D-Line is not carrying its weight. They "literally" need to get their weight up!

I have to say that the defense has really been a letdown this year. 2 years ago we were 6-10 but our defense was at its best and came out with an attitiude and fire that intimidated opposing offenses. We made mistakes with Pierce and Ryan Clark and these mistakes have come back to haunt us. The defense was something that you could be proud of as a Redskins fan but thats's just not the case anymore and its a real disappointment.

Very nice post. The only thing I would add is-

This is the primary reason we need to run the dang ball on offense, to keep the defenders off the field and fresh for as long as bloody possible!!

/Hail:helmet:

This is a joke, right? Youre not talking about our Run Run Pass Punt (RRPP) offense.

I dont know, if our D-linemen were generating ANY pressure whatsoever, maybe he wouldnt feel the need to send the house. Im not sure what everyones love affair with Joe Saleve'a is around here but he's never impressed me much, I d say he's an average DT at best, thats why it doesnt surprise me that a sixth round pick is about to steal his job. And Griffs first year with us was solid but he hasnt done much since, either.

With Archuleta, we knew what we were getting there and we also knew it would take him a while to adjust to our defense. He's much like a Roy Williams, great run stuffer but a liability in coverage.

We can blame it on a lot of things at this point but the d-line is much like the o-line. If they dont perform, it makes everyone around them look bad.

I'd like to add one caveot to your thread. Nothing has hurt the defense or the team as much as Redskin's drafting skills ( or lack of ). They are simply the worst drafting team in the NFL.

Case in point, the pick two years ago was Sean Merriman. The pick this year was Jimmy Williams , the best college DB in the draft. He was supposed to go in the top ten to twenty picks. When he fell to us in the second round The Redskins should have pounced on him. Also is there one team that you can think of that pisses away their late round picks as spectacularly as the Redskins?:2cents:

Until Vinnie is demoted to Vice- president of laundry and moral and a general manager is hired The Skins will continue to use the Draft as a public means to shoot themselves in the foot.
