Just registered a couple of minutes. I am thoroughly impressed by this forum. if you haven't figured it out by now I am a die hard Cowboys fan. I live behind enemy lines. I have enjoyed the last couple of years, but all that counts is winning the trophy. Hope to engage in some football discussions.

Welcome aboard and stuff.
We enjoy guests from other teams. If we end up savaging your team in other threads, don't take it personally At least we usually avoid all those annoying flame wars.

Hey Charles. Welcome. We've got a few Cowboy regulars here. We get along just fine

Anyways, I recall the Boys having a lot of salary cap space entering the offseason. I know they signed a QB and LaRoi Glover... but what's up next for the Boys? How much money do they have left to play with? What other free agents are they interested in? Is it Jammer or Henderson that the Boys are targetting?

So far jerry has signed DT La'Roi Glover, TE Jeff Robinson Rams(Deepsnapper/TE/FB), QB Chad Hutchinson stanford.
Today reports from Valley ranch are that CB Bryant Westbrook Lions just had a workout and is having a physical this afternoon. Westbrook was having a Pro Bowl season before he got injured last year. But it appears he has recovered, He lives in Houston, Texas and wants to sign with the Cowboys. If Jerry Jones signs him the contract will be incentive laden so he can prove that he can return to his Pro Bowl form.

The Cowboys actually just 'officially' signed Bryant Westbrook ... the article was posted moments ago at the Cowboys official site (1-year deal, worth around $1 mil).

The 'Boys have around $5.5 mil or so left under the cap after this signing according to the reports I've read (based on the most recent cap updates from John Clayton, and Cowboys' reporter Mickey Spagnola).

FoxSports Southwest is reporting Dallas may get Ken Dilger signed this weekend -- we'll see. We were hot on his trails early in free agency, when his price tag appeared high. But his physical didn't look too good (knees) so we, and a lot of teams, backed off. Apparently if his price has come down, we're interested again.

Quincy is labeled the 'favorite' to be the starter for the 'Boys next season. The staff says it's his job to lose. If anyone beats him out, it won't be Hutch considering he's been away from the game for 4.5 years. The team, reportedly, doesn't really want him to see the field this year. They view him as an excellent prospect that in a few years could really develop nicely -- if Q succeeds, he'd be tradebait (a la Green Bay and all the QB trades they have made unloading their talent at the position); if Q fails, Hutch would likely get the shot to replace him if he progresses as we hope. TFY Draft Preview said that since Hutchinson will be a 'rookie' this year -- had he been eligible for the draft, he would have been a top 15-20 pick and the 3rd QB taken more than likely. So, that's why the 'Boys are relatively high on the guy.

And Navy, anything is a possibility in the draft at this point. Jerry is making a lot of statements publicly about William Green, and the possibilities of him replacing Emmitt (who many think will be gone after the '02 season). Drafting Jammer, if there, is still an option. Roy Williams' name has been thrown around. We're bringing in WRs Javon Walker and Antonio Bryant for private workouts as 2nd round prospects. There's talk we could draft a TE if a trade down occurs. And the possibility still exists that a DT (Henderson, Haynesworth, Bryant) would be taken to plant next to Glover on the line. I'd be shocked to see us draft a WR in round 1, but in rounds 2 or 3, it could very well happen.

Of course, that is all based on the draft talk we hear from the media ... who knows how much of it is really true, or if Jerry is just blowing a lot of smoke.

[ March 22, 2002, 08:59 PM: Message edited by: Dale ]

welcome Charles.

After reading of the signing of Westbrook and last week, LeRoi Jones as your DT, it is very, very obvious that the loading up on defense in Dallas is a poise for some form of push. Those are good additions to an already tough defense, that really shouldn't have surprised anyone. Yeah, I was surprised and overlooked the fact that is wasn't an aging defense. That speaks volumes for you and lets me know deep down, the rivalry wasn't renewed two years ago, it is NOW.

Welcome, QCard.

Question for you. It seems to me like Dallas' biggest problem, these days, is Jerry Jones. His draft record after Jimmy Johnson's departure is just not so good.

So, does it look as though he's going to wise up and stop playing general manager? Or are you gonna have to wait forever?

Welcome Qcard, let me be the first to inform you that I expect no hard feelings when we exact a fitting revenge at Irving & FedEx this coming season.

Jerry Jones has publically taken the blame for the poor drafts. Only time will tell whether he has changed his philosophy. Jerry Jones will be jugded forever on his selection of Quincy Carter. I honestly believe Jerry Jones legacy will fall or rise based on the performance and development of Quincy Carter. I believe Jerry Jones can be a good GM. Jerry Jones drafting has been horrible because up until last year Jerry was drafting for need. Jerry Jones philosophy in the past was based on filling holes of need and not taking the best player available.

Jerry Jones' problem was that he is a gambler. Instead of taking the top rated quarterback on the board in round 2 he takes Quincy Carter in hopes of hitting a home run and running circles around the other GM's.

He just isn't that astute of a personnel man to fool EVERYBODY out there.

Again, I have no problem with some of the picks he has made in terms of a position breakdown of his needs at the time, and there were quality players available to select.

Jones just didn't select them!

As I mentioned on another thread, Jones' biggest mistake in the past 3 years was believing in 2000 that Dallas still had another SB run in the team and that lead to the disastrous trade for Galloway that cost 2 #1 picks and a boatload of cash.

More objective observers could see that Troy Aikman was no longer an elite quarterback and that the Cowboys defense, especially the line was no longer formidable.

If Dallas had kept those two #1 picks and selected the players that Seattle did, which was not unreasonable based on the teams needs, the Cowboys would be way ahead of the game right now.

Instead they are still rebuilding with some players that are question marks.
