brandies
I think we lost by that score in 1986 (17-0) to the Giants. Thanks for your help here, we are dealing with 2 dominant defenses and the west coast offense in two other games. Just trying to figure out how we match up against Seattle. brandies
What trend are you talking about? I was just asking. Two games stuck out in my minds and those were teams with dominating defense. This is not part of my PHD thesis. just wondering if there was a theme. Thanks for those who brought out other teams that beat us. Maybe there is a theme, maybe not. SkinsHokieFan
If you are looking for a theme, each team Gibbs lost to was either the Superbowl champion, or that team won the Superbowl shortly thereafter The Giants and Bears had dominant defenses. The 49ers were too much for the 1990 Redskins and in 1992 barely beat an injured squad What the trend means is we got this game against Seattle

SkinsFTW
I think those playoff losses are the reason Gibbs starts Brunell over Ramsey. As good as I think Ramsey could be, I am sure that Gibbs knows best. It's just too easy thinking that Ramsey would light these teams up but Shroeder in 1986 and Rypien in 1989-1990 got beaten in the playoffs. I remember that 1990 game specifically. We lost 28-10 but it was actually a close game. Rypien drove the field over and over all game long but kept throwing INTs into the endzone. We really probably should have won that game or kept it real close at least. Heres a recap: http://home.earthlink.net/~seifertsite/1990games/redskins290.html "The job was completed by the 49ers' defense, which yielded 441 yards but made the plays when it had to. The 49ers stopped the Redskins inside the 20 without a point three times in the second half as Rypien made the mistakes that Montana didn't, even though Art Monk had 10 catches for 163 yards." The last TD the 49ers scored was on a fumble return by Rip because he held the ball too damn long I remember after that game people were ready to run Rip out of town. That and the MNF Colts game at the end of the year which we blew and cost us homefield in the first round. Rip threw an INT at the end of the game which was returned for a TD and gave the Colts the win I really think the expierences with Mark Rypien in 1990 is why Brunell is in now, just like you stated But, Brunell nearly cost us the Tampa game with that horrible INT. It must be a gut thing though, because for some reason I am always waiting for Ramsey to screw up, even though Brunell seems to have a bad fumble or int

MontanaRed
Gibbs didn't coach the 1999 team though. That was Norval's finest day. Ahhh, yes, how correct. I didn't read the post properly. I guess I reacted since I have read so many posts stating "we haven't (a)been in or (b)won a playoff game (a)since 1992, (b)in 12 years, ©in 13 years, d) in 14 years." One was in a post about fairweather fans! I'm certainly not the stat Nazi by any stretch of the imagination, but have we really forgotten 6 years ago? Mister Happy
The Raiders actually had the 4th ranked defense, and the 1990 49ers had the 3rd ranked defense.
