Mickalino
Anyone remember Cracker from the early 90's ? They came out around '93 and somehow disappeared from radar, even though the continued to cut albums up until '03, apparently. Has anyone followed them since the '90's and know how the band has progressed ?
ncsuapex
One of my favorite bands, well actually they were Camper Van Beethoven before Cracker or at least the same lead singer (David Lowery) and one or 2 from CVB. Hadn't heard much of them in the last few years.
yankstrat
Cracker had definitely had some fine moments as a band. They have continued to put out good music imho. I havea recent album by them called countrysides which is excellent..it is Cracker playing country style music..nice combo. There is also a recent Camper Van Beethoven CD, Roman Times, which too is excellent
Commander PK
"I'll be with your girl, like being low. Hey, Hey, Hey, like being stoned...." Yeah, I remember them. Catchy tune. I don't know any of their other songs, never bought the album.
jrockster21
Cracker kicks ass -- I saw them at Langerado Music Festival in 2004. Awesome band, and its a shame they "fell off the radar" because they are much better than 90% of the crap that is out there today. Like way better. dreamingwolf
you shamed them by saying "like way better". I do respect their music, but I think they were vaulted way higher than they should have been and I think alot of their failure makes them alluring. They are talented and deserve the retro respect the thread starter gives them.
WeaponXDawkins
Anyone remember Cracker ? (no offense to anyone)They came out around '93 and somehow disappeared, even though the continued to cut albums up until '03, apparently. Has anyone followed them since the '90's and know how the band has progressed ? I have an ex-girlfriend that loves that band. She used to go up and down the east coast following them like the Grateful Dead or something. I couldn't stand them. Very pretentious and boring. Thanks for reminding me of my ex though. ncsuapex
I saw Camper van Beethoven open up for the 10,000 Maniacs in 89 or 90 in Raleigh, NC. Man that lil fidle girl could play. Some good Camper/Cracker songs to check out are: Eye of Fatima Where the hell is Bill? Low Pictures of Matchstick Men(one of my favs) Get Off This Teen Angst Take the Skinheads Bowling Six more miles to the graveyard There are a bunch more I like but they are a little too "campy" for some. AJ_Skins
Cracker is/was based in Richmond. I know they have a studio somewhere downtown, but other than that I can't say I've followed them very closely. I had that one album that was popular, but I'm not a big fan of nosebleed "indie rock". Rocky21
The lead singer and guitarist are from Cali but David Lowery married a girl from Richmond and the band is based out of Richmond now. You wouldn't believe the studio they record out of. Apparently it’s state of the art but looks like a crack house from the outside. The cool thing is since they live here for some part of the year, they play some of the local dives and downtown festivals unannounced. Always a nice surprise. The bass player for Camper Van Beethoven plays bass with Cracker now. I saw them in June and it was probably the best show I've seen them do. They've still got it. If you want to get into the band the introductory cd to buy is Garage D'Or.

I don't remember the studio being anything special, but they had a fantastic engineer(John?).

They recorded the entire Countrysides there.

Apparently it’s state of the art but looks like a crack house from the outside. You'd never know it was a recording studio from the outside. I think that's the idea, and they intentionally set up studios that way, for security and privacy reasons. If you have some mega-studio, you wouldn't want every "musician wanna-be", or criminal thieves knowing where it is.

Baculus
I saw Camper Van Beethoven one time while I was a student at the U. of Arkansas. I later saw Cracker upon up for a couple of Dead shows. They were pretty good and had a really good response from the audience. CVB was pretty cool in their own right. TODD
Another band that came out around the same time, with a similar sound, and funny name was - Meat Puppets.....remember Back Water ? I dig "Meat Puppets II", but from what I hear they kind of fell out after that. And, like most people I'm sure, I got into them after hearing their rendition of "Lake of Fire" played with Cobain on that legendary MTV Unplugged. Joe Sick
It seems like they play every year for free on Brown's Island here in Richmond. Last time I went, Camper opened, then Cracker played, I think. I believe that Dave does more work with other musicians than his own, now. http://www.styleweekly.com/article.asp?idarticle=8290 http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_david_lowery_cracker/ http://www.popmatters.com/music/interviews/cracker-020616.shtml

KingJeremy
Johnny Hickman just put out a solo album last year. Really good root rock/alt country stuff. He opened for Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers at a Mexico show in May, and a couple more shows in Tempe in June. The Peacemakers are good stuff too. Check them out at www.azpeacemakers.com
CEJ2200
I saw them in C'Ville, VA - very good. I thought the lead singer (name?) had/has a studio in Richmond.
