Former wife of team owner is arrested

Busted -- for shoplifting: Suzanne Elizabeth Cooke.

Cooke, 49, is the ex-wife of Jack Kent Cooke, multi-millionaire owner of the Washington Redskins. He died in 1997 at age 84.

Happened last Wednesday at Neiman Marcus at the Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables. Police say Cooke swiped a Chanel purse -- pink -- with a $1,475 price tag.

''Defendant removed a handbag from a display, walked out of the department . . . and placed the handbag inside one of the shopping bags,'' says Officer Martin Roche's arrest report. ``This was observed by . . . store security. The defendant then exited the store without paying for the item.''

Investigators say Cooke slipped the purloined pocketbook into a Nordstrom shopping bag filled with women's apparel -- slacks, jeans, workout tops and shorts. Police impounded the clothing, estimating the value at $765.

It is not Cooke's first arrest. ''Cooke . . . served time in Virginia in 1999 as a habitual offender for drunken driving and was found guilty in D.C. on a 2002 DWI charge,'' according to an '04 column item in The Washington Post.

Jack, who once owned the L.A. Lakers and The Los Angeles Daily News, was worth big bucks -- north of $500 million. He was 74, and Suzanne 31 and pregnant, when she became Wife No. 3 in July '87.

They separated a month later. In January '88, Suzanne gave birth to Jacqueline. That October, the Cookes divorced. When Jack died in 1997, he left a $5 million trust for Jacqueline, and nothing for Suzanne, The Washington Post reported.

Cooke, who has lived in Virginia and Maryland, gave Gables cops a Coconut Grove address -- a condo at Mayfair Hotel & Spa. She would not discuss her arrest. ``No comment.''

She is set to appear July 6 before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Jacqueline Hogan Scola.
