  1. In practice they aren’t real sponsorships in the traditional sense. They are effectively a school’s athletic boosters funneling cash directly to players. It’s quickly evolved into a very explicit pay for play. I could see it getting much harder to sign players in the 10-30 range from college. Especially if they play for a P5 contending program and are likely further away from MLB. Teams don’t have unlimited funds to allocate to signing bonuses, and now they have to compete with boosters paying players to stay. Not an ideal situation for the current financial model of the draft and rookie deals.
  2. One thing I was considering this morning (relatively to the financial component) is how much more difficult it’s going to be for MLB teams to sign players early out of college (and especially out of high school) with the new NIL system. Some of these top tier college athletes are making 7 figures. Yeah if you’re a top drafting pick you’ll have an awesome signing bonus, but then you’ll be making minimal money for 6+ years on your rookie deal. NIL could end up shattering MLB’s draft and signing process.
  3. Interesting… everything I’ve read had Crews and Chase Dollander as 1-2. I haven’t kept up much during the current season though. editing to add: damn, Skenes is having one hell of a season. Preseason scouts had described Dollander as the “best college pitcher in 10 years.” Which incidentally may mean best since Strasburg. But Skenes has better stuff, which is wild.
  4. That should be in the wall trim, not the door, so you can set the screw in a thicker piece of wood. It does have a base though. Unscrew it by the spring. The end of the spring gets threaded into the base.
  5. Glad he’s not dead but like… maybe he’ll consider retiring the channel.
  6. Gore is just painting that outside corner pitch after pitch.
  7. I’ve shared this before but one of my coolest baseball experiences was seeing Stras pitch a rehab start for Potomac. Got seats right behind home plate and from that vantage point, holy **** that change up was incredible.
  8. *not a lawyer but I’d imagine he’d need to appear. Even if not for whatever reason, can you imagine the news coverage if he was out campaigning while a jury was considering throwing his ass in jail? Trump’s campaigning is the least of his worries right now. He’s spent the last eight years ****ing around and he’s got a wave of finding out about to crash down on him. These first 34 criminal charges are just the first.
  9. The pitch clock makes it significantly more difficult to multi task while watching baseball.
  10. It’s very plausible to me that Florida could ultimately prevail in court. It will take the better part of a decade to happen including appeals and such, during which time Disney can just continue on like they have been. They’ll spend tens of million on legal fees, which is a drop in the bucket for Disney but will probably be a tough investment for the Florida GA. I see this settling in the future with Desantis’s successor, which I think is exactly what Disney is going for here. Just let them toss it into the courts and drag it out for years.
  11. Standing by my earlier guess that the actual sale price ends up being *well* under $6b. Maybe under $5b. While being in the DC market and having the opportunity to rebuild the franchise to your liking does have some inherent advantages, we also have this reality: Broncos sold for $4.65b less than two years ago have been top 5 in the league in attendance. They have an established brand and fan base. Their stadium, while not much newer than ours, is much more serviceable (note that they are also starting to think about a new one as well). It’s also located very close to downtown Denver. As much as Snyder wants to wish his franchise is worth $7b (or now, $6b), I genuinely do not see it. The stadium is a dump. Any move to a new stadium in DC would have to overcome ridiculous political hurdles that don’t exist for other cities. The fan base has been rapidly eroding for decades and is legitimately now bottom 10 in the league. We have a name nobody likes and a brand that will forever be tied to Dan ****ing Snyder unless they go through the process of re-branding AGAIN. We have allegations of financial malfeasance on the part of the owner and pending lawsuits hanging over the head of the franchise. And the minority owners were willing to part with their shares of the team, TWO YEARS AGO, at a roughly $2b valuation. I’m sorry but did they just willingly cost themselves hundreds of millions of dollars? No. They saw the books and know the value. Everything out there about Snyder thinking it’s worth $6b+ is just smoke he himself has put out there. I don’t think Harris has offered that much. I don’t think anybody would offer that much. And now Snyder is desperate for someone to bail him out and hunting that he wants Bezos to jump into the mix. It’s also info Snyder’s side is leaking to try to pump up the price tag.
  12. Recently transitioned to he so I guess was just trying to fit in with typical American male culture.
  13. I think so too. If he’s not traded this off-season he’ll take the year off and try again next year. Watson hadn’t played in like what, three years, and he still got $230m.
  14. As an added benefit, when the team is embarrassing we could just scuttle it and be done with the season.
  15. Uconn has been running their opponents out of the building. They’ve got to be considered the favorites to win it all, by a decent margin imo.
  16. I’d be extremely tickled if both 1s lose tonight. I’ll settle for one or the other.
  17. I like to imagine Bezos buying the team and immediately turning the Ashburn facility into a large data center.
  18. Consider me extremely skeptical that Robles actually takes a step forward. I’ve seen at least 3 different iterations of Robles reinventing himself or tweaking his swing or adjusting his approach during spring training. He just turns into himself during the season. At this point he is who he is until he proves otherwise.
  19. They'll ultimately spin it has a large scale redevelopment project, get the city to pay for a big chunk of it, and finance a ton of the rest. They might only need like $500m cash for a $3b+ project.
  20. General impression of the rumor mill from yesterday: Lots of reports from credible people on the beat that it isn’t done yet (but “goal to go”.) I think this is probably the most accurate reflection of where things sit. Lots of other folks saying there’s a deal. Both could be essentially correct. There could be a verbal agreement, or the buyer meeting Dan’s price point, which makes it effectively over from a bidding standpoint. They still obviously need to finish the contract.
  21. May have had a disproportionate impact on UVA given how soon after their title it was.
