DE and CB will probably be our glaring holes going into 2024. But you’ve gotta have holes somewhere.

And from a QB development standpoint, absolutely pour your resources into the offense first. Defense can wait til the team is ready to compete.

I am not sure. Maybe he wants to avoid any competition or a choosing process between him and Fields. Some guys just want to be the heir apparent. The Bears would be real smart to pick Marvin Harrison Jr.  I thought Fields was better this year and could use some help.

Best move for the Bears would be trade down to about 3-4 and take Harrison, then take McCarthy with their second 1st if he's still there. Assuming that pick is outside the top 5, you can roll with Fields another year and see how he progresses before making a decision on the future. Regardless of who is at QB, an offense with DJ Moore and Marvin Harrison Jr would be nuts.

  3. Spent the past week some digesting QB options and I do think this is a really intriguing class. It's a REALLY good time to be picking in the top 5. Some kneejerk amateur takes:

-Williams makes some of the most stunning plays I've ever seen. He's also has a tremendous amount he needs to clean up in the NFL. He needs to be more careful with the ball (in the pocket, running, etc), and learn how to work within a system so he can take his singles and doubles and be more selective about when to take shots. Elite traits: arm strength, creativity, elusiveness. NFL high end comp: some blend between Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes. Low end: stronger arm Kyler Murray.
-Maye has the best pure arm talent to make high level NFL throws. He's also a great playmaker and athlete, and most other class would be a hands down #1 overall imo. NFL comp: Justin Herbert, little bit of Stafford's arm imo
-Daniels is one hell of a runner and throws a nice deep ball but makes me nervous. I can't think of a good NFL comp that's had a successful career. People point to Lamar but he's not anywhere near the passer Lamar was in college. He's also a bit older. As intriguing as he looks on the highlight reel, I'd be hesitant to take him in the top 10. NFL comp: RG3
-JJ McCarthy is being significantly overlooked. While he lacks the highest upside of Williams and Maye, his work out of the pocket, and his instincts escaping the pocket, look the cleanest out of the bunch. He's a day 1 starter. Doesn't have quite the top 5 QB upside that Maye does, but I can absolutely see him having the most successful career out of this class. NFL comp: Kirk Cousins but better physical traits.

Maye's my guy at 2-3 (even if it involves trading up a spot or two). But I would not feel bad at all about landing McCarthy, who I think will go way earlier than the media is currently projecting.

Good! I had not considered them at #1. A lot would need to happen. I think Carolina would need to win its last 2 games. If so, and we pick 3, that would be super interesting. Would we go up 2 for Caleb or let the draft come to us? I don’t expect the Bears to trade #1 though.

And if the Bears are #2, do they trade out, take Maye, or take Harrison? So many variables. But it’ll become more clear once the season is over and the draft order is set.

imo in that scenario we’d probably see both of the top two picks traded. Cards would move down to maybe 3 and hope for Harrison. Bears could either take Harrison at 2 or look to move back and acquire more picks.

If there's an ability to trade up for Caleb Williams, then you can't ignore the "why".  Everyone says he's the sure fire #1, closest to Mahomes so why would a team trade out of #1?  I mean whoever the QB is, he's going to be the face of the franchise.

Stuff is swirling about the over bearing dad, the kid is soft and immature, etc.  Don't doubt the talent and hope whoever we hire flushes all that out.

Albert Breer and Ted Johnson joined Michael Felger on "Sports Sunday" to discuss USC QB Caleb Williams, and how concerning a couple of recent incidents off the field may be

The personality stuff is especially concerning to me because he's absolutely not a finished product at QB. He's a phenomenal improviser with off schedule plays, but his work out of the pocket could use of a ton of improvement. The college game being slow/easy for him has led to a bunch of bad habits with footwork, being careless with the football, throwing off his back foot, etc. All of which can be coached out of him, if he wants to be coached.

The roster is deconstructed and we're drafting at 4. We have a bunch of great picks and a truck load of cap space and everyone is getting fired.

Not sure we can deconstruct any more than Ron has already done for us.

It's build time and these things happen fast or not at all. Bad year (this year), mediocre year with upside(next year), SB run or close to it.

This is where we are at right now.

Try to get that top 2-4 pick this year and trade back with an emphasis on future picks. Trade Terry and Allen, intentionally hold off on signing any meaningful FAs this offseason, roll with Sam again next season. We are (thankfully) in year 1 of a needed 2 year nosedive, followed by a 2-3 year rebuild after that. Anytime after this offseason that you have a great opportunity to do so, you can go get your QB. But I want us picking number 1 next year.

  7. As much as the allure of drafting a top 5 QB is interesting, I don't think it's what will pay off most of the team longterm. A multiyear rebuild after a painful multiyear deconstruction of the roster is what will pay off the most. We're going to get worse before we get better.

  8. Best case scenario for our rebuild (imo) is landing a good enough draft pick to take Daniels, and trading it to someone who isn't in the division. Get down to the 5-10 range and draft a stud LT. Acquire extra picks.

I haven't watched a ton of college ball this year nor am I one to "study tape," however my scouting credentials do include strongly favoring Stoud over Young last year. Daniels highlight reel is devoid of mid level NFL throws. He's either throwing over the top of the defense or running the ball. And he takes more hits running it than would be ideal. He reminds me a lot more of RG3 than Lamar.

well. When you’re a fan of a team selling you’re rarely going to think you got the better end of the deal.

they’re just accumulating draft picks for their next GM.

I expect mcclaurin, Robinson to be gone. Maybe a few more.

Young I disagree with just because of how little they got for him (and imo how much potential he still has).

Definitely could see moving one of our established blue chips on a veteran contract (Allen, Payne, Mclaurin) for a 1st or more.

  10. Was Rivera asked about the mystery review? Was there an explanation? I assume if someone ruled it incomplete on the field there would be video of it (back judge running up to confer, etc).

All I know is before Slay went down injured, the side judge called it a catch, ran and spotted the ball, and called for the chains to be moved. If the Eagles thought it wasn’t a catch, before the two minute warning, they should have had to challenge it. Given there was no video evidence to that the ball hit the ground, the call on the field would have stood.

This is one of the most blatant screw jobs the refs have ever committed against Washington because it wasn’t just a missed or bad call. It was blatantly breaking the rules to benefit the Eagles.

We're getting a glimpse of Ron the motivator now. Looks like he's figured out what the problems are.

NBC4 sports Washington did an interview with Ron earlier this week in which they asked him basically if he had assessed the tapes yet and figured out why they aren't winning. The conversation went something like this. The words aren't exact but they are close:

Interviewer - "have you had a chance to review the tapes and analyze what the Commanders' problems are?

    Ron - "yes, we have".

Interviewer - "What have you found?"

Ron - "none of us are doing the things we need to do to win well enough".

Interviewer - "how do you plan to fix that?"

Ron - "we're all going to start doing better at the things we need to do to win".

Today, Ron has had a new sign installed in the team's locker room.

    https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/ron_rivera_turns_to_new_do_your_job_commanders_locker_room_sign_for_message/s1_16457_39379101

“Because I think, looking at the tape, watching the game, our previous five games, looking at some of the stuff that I read, the numbers, obviously to me, there’s a sense and a feel that we’re not doing the things that we need to do,” Rivera said, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

Doesn’t quite have the same ring as “Believe” but hey what do I know.

  12. There’s no reason to let them finish the season.  Next three games are Falcons, Giants, Eagles. If we split the first two and lose to the Eagles, go ahead and fire them all. If we lose the first two just go ahead and do it then.

edit to add: I’m a little torn on who should be fired. It would probably be too disruptive to fire JDR and Rivera simultaneously during the season. While JDR is obviously deserving of being let go, maybe just keep him on for continuity while the season winds down.

This is why I don't find this funny at all.

I'm still not finding if they can vote on a CR without a Speaker.

Dems probably jus walked into a trap without realizing it doing nothing because this might part of the far-right only agreeing to vote for a Speaker that will give them their 30% cuts that the previous one wouldn't.

How do we get out of that?

Pure speculation on my part but I don’t think Dems would have let him get yanked if they didn’t think they could come out of this renomination process with a better option. And given how difficult it was for McCarthy to be approved, there’s a reasonable chance that a coalition centrist could use Dem support to win the speakership.

It was close. If it was ruled a catch it would have stayed a catch. There wasnt enough to overturn it.

Yeah people are posting the pic but it’s worth noting that daylight you think you see between the white of his shoe and the white of the line could easily be the red stripe at the bottom of Terry’s shoes. Imo the official who made the call on the field probably had the best angle to see it. Not positive he got it right though. I would have been livid if that call was overturned against us. Absolutely a situation where “call stands” was the right thing regardless of how it was called on the field.
