Any truth to post on Facebook today that team is buying 200 acres near Waldorf/St. Charles Town Center for practice facility??

I like Maye over Daniels because I think he has more upside, even if he isn't as refined in his footwork and mechanics right now, which is sort of understandable when talking about a guy who has started 2 seasons vs one who has started 5.

But I'm getting a sinking feeling that we might go with Daniels. Which wouldn't be the end of the world, as he's a good prospect. But I have enough concerns about him to be dubious as to the overall outlook of his trajectory if we pick him.

I'm in the same boat. Someone posted a heatmap chart here showing QBR in different areas of the field. Daniels was a mediocre passer to everywhere on the field other than when he threw it deep. And if you look at his tape, you see first round, top 10 WRs beating the defense over the top, time and time again. That does not translate to the NFL.

He's really fast and can change the game with his legs. But he's also thin as a rail and take big hits.

I don't necessarily think he can't or won't be a good NFL QB. But there is a lot of risk involved. And I'd prefer a different direction.

Spent the past week some digesting QB options and I do think this is a really intriguing class. It's a REALLY good time to be picking in the top 5. Some kneejerk amateur takes:

-Williams makes some of the most stunning plays I've ever seen. He's also has a tremendous amount he needs to clean up in the NFL. He needs to be more careful with the ball (in the pocket, running, etc), and learn how to work within a system so he can take his singles and doubles and be more selective about when to take shots. Elite traits: arm strength, creativity, elusiveness. NFL high end comp: some blend between Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes. Low end: stronger arm Kyler Murray.
-Maye has the best pure arm talent to make high level NFL throws. He's also a great playmaker and athlete, and most other class would be a hands down #1 overall imo. NFL comp: Justin Herbert, little bit of Stafford's arm imo
-Daniels is one hell of a runner and throws a nice deep ball but makes me nervous. I can't think of a good NFL comp that's had a successful career. People point to Lamar but he's not anywhere near the passer Lamar was in college. He's also a bit older. As intriguing as he looks on the highlight reel, I'd be hesitant to take him in the top 10. NFL comp: RG3
-JJ McCarthy is being significantly overlooked. While he lacks the highest upside of Williams and Maye, his work out of the pocket, and his instincts escaping the pocket, look the cleanest out of the bunch. He's a day 1 starter. Doesn't have quite the top 5 QB upside that Maye does, but I can absolutely see him having the most successful career out of this class. NFL comp: Kirk Cousins but better physical traits.

Maye's my guy at 2-3 (even if it involves trading up a spot or two). But I would not feel bad at all about landing McCarthy, who I think will go way earlier than the media is currently projecting.

3 months later and I'm pretty happy with my gut reaction. Couple updates:

Williams - Not really an update. Same as my initial take: if you are sitting with a chance to draft him you need to be absolutely 100% certain you can get him to work within your offense while still giving him the flexibility to be creative and make plays. If he can do that he will be one of the best QBs in the NFL. The talent is enough that you cannot pass on him though.
Maye- footwork needs to be improved. This should be coachable. He has a chance to be a top 10 QB, maybe top 5.
Daniels - I like Daniels a lot more as a passer now after I've had some more time to watch him. His body type and propensity to take huge hits is a big knock for me. Massive boom/bust risk.
McCarthy- I still think of him as a more athletic Kirk Cousins. I think he'll be really good. Day 1 starter would not be doing him any favors though. If I were considering drafting him, I would prefer the option of having him sit initially, just to get accustomed to the offense being throwing him into the fire given how little he was asked to carry the offense in college.

I think all four QBs go in the top 5. Any of these guys could have been a #1 overall pick in a different year.

  4. I suspect for an onside kick they'll just need to opt in for it much like teams now have to opt to go for 2. Kills the surprise/fake offside kick but that's it.

I predict we will see more kickoffs returned for TDs this year. And then by mid season kickers will resume kicking it through the endzone, resulting in starting field position being effectively the 30 full time now.

2019 had...1,2,3,4 in 2 regions, 1,2,3,5 in another region, and a 1,2,3,12 in the other region.

That year's boringness was overshadowed for me bc I am a Virginia fan :ols:

  6. This quickly turned into the least interesting NCAA Tournament I can remember. Out of the remaining 16 teams, there are only three that are 5 seeds or worse. One was the national runner up last year and the other two are ACC teams.

Cole being hurt is a surprise because he's known for having really solid mechanics. He is both great in terms of ERA and the sheer volume of innings he eats as a starter.

The human body isn't made to throw a ball 100mph. Guys who make a living on that kind of velocity will eventually break. The few that don't end up in the HOF.

  9. In a quarterback loaded draft class, with a Bears that already has at least a mid-tier starter quality QB on a rookie deal, Bears would be silly to not seriously explore trading down.
They could probably land a 2nd and change, maybe late 1st for Fields. They could also move out of #1 and add a future 1st just for dropping one or two spots, and still draft a top QB.

Heck if they decided they liked Fields more than Maye/Daniels/McCarthy, they could trade down from 1 to 2, then again from 2 to wherever, getting the QB premium return for both trades.

They're absolutely in the drivers seat and imo would have to REALLY love Williams a ton more than the rest of the class to take him. Which isn't to say they won't. But it can't be a close evaluation between QB1 and QB2 for them.

That's one area where I think Virginia might have an edge. They recently expanded the Silver Line out to Ashburn and you have lots of open space there.

I live in Va but would still prefer it to be in DC, but it is a legitimate option if space is an issue in the DC area.

I still like the idea of sticking it in the quarry in Herndon off 28. Opens up some really interesting stadium concepts like leaving one side of it a solid stone wall. Imagine how unique and loud that would be.  (I'm just making this up btw. no idea how deep the thing is or what the walls would look like)

I wouldn’t sleep on a QB like McCarthy, kid is a winner I have no problem drafting down taking him with the intention of getting good talent around him and building the team.

The risk would be how far they can trade down and still land him, if that is indeed the intention. Once you get to about pick 5, it opens the door for a ton of teams in the 10-20 range to be able to trade up. So even if you feel you can still land him based on the draft order, that might not necessarily be the order as the draft plays out.

I posted the below in reply to a meme about Cutler, Trubisky and Fields being ruined by the Bears and a pic of Williams implying he would be too:

I don’t really love this narrative.

It’s giving an excuse to all of those guys that the Bears ruined them and it wasn’t partially their doing.

I’d argue Fields is developing and has gotten better each year. And Cutler was never ruined.

But the built in excuses for Williams are already starting.

I don’t know, man. Him saying he can do everything Mahomes can, the little things that happened throughout the year, the rumor he doesn’t want to play for Chicago. I’m souring on Williams.

I’ll have to trust the decision makers for now, that if he winds up here the team did their due diligence.

I really, really hope they do.

Basically this for me. If it’s overblown or not true, the Bears will take him. If they don’t, we probably don’t want him either.
