  1. The vaccines aren't a forcefield, the virus will always be able to enter your nose. His congestion is likely his immune system stopping it in its tracks and keeping it from spreading to his upper airways. Lots of vaccinated people will have congestion as their immune system recognizes the virus immediately and begins fighting it off quickly.
  2. It does provide minimal protection from symptomatic infection, but Pfizer's study indicates there is still solid protection from severe disease. And children are already at much lower risk to begin with for COVID-19. I think it bears more caution but there's other mitigations - have them wear a true mask for example (KF94, KN95).
  3. Kids aren't authorized for boosters yet and won't be for a while. It's not useless and their age puts them at much less risk.
  4. Yup as Omicron grows positives are about to skyrocket. Two doses provides minimal protection from symptomatic infection.
  5. I got COVID fully vaccinated and never had more than mild congestion for a couple of days. My point is not to say I told you so or "there!", but that anecdotes are just that - the population-level data proves vaccinated people are at less risk of disease, and clear the virus faster than unvaccinated people. We know you can still get COVID vaccinated and you can still have severe disease - the point is, reduce your odds of screwing over your team. If I avoid serious injury not wearing a seatbelt, it doesn't mean not wearing a seatbelt still isn't stupid.
  6. Selfish teammate and I have little respect for his intelligence if he doesn't understand what a vaccine is AFTER one of the women at the NIH who helped create Moderna's walked the entire team through how it works. Clown.
  7. First neutralization data on Omicron is in. TLDR below:
  8. You got to see some incredible passing plays! The first two Capitals goals were tremendous tic tac toe.
  9. The most common rapid test, Abbot Labs' BINAXNow is 97% accurate in detecting you when you're contagious. There has been poor reporting and communication, even from people in the health industry, about PCR vs. rapid testing. PCR is medical sensitivity and answers "have I been recently infected?" Rapid tests are public health sensitivity and answer "am I at a contagious phase of infection at this moment right now?" Sampling biases have resulted in bad studies suggesting rapid tests aren't reliable because they test asymptomatics after they have passed the contagious phase of infection most commonly. The 8 tests that have been FDA authorized are all over 94%. PCR isn't more accurate, it's simply trying to answer a different question - the issue is when you use PCR to determine quarantines, you end up with people missing school and work for no reason because it can stay positive for weeks after you're no longer contagious or ill. The 24-72 hour period of waiting for a result also drastically reduces its effectiveness in stopping transmission - PCR is a moment in time, taking one a couple of days before traveling is not that safe in an era with Omicron and Delta. You can go from minimal viral load to superspreader in 24 hours with SARS COV 2. The U.S. should have prioritized buying so many rapid tests that people could take them whenever they want before seeing relatives, friends, entering major venues etc. It would keep us safest but they went the other route with lab testing and here we are.
  10. There's thousands of cases everywhere - it was here long before South Africa sounded the alarm. The parents should be indicted and jailed. Not joking.
  11. It is about ****ing time rapid tests are reimbursed. Biden administration should have forced this the moment them took office. Rapid tests should have been the No. 1 thing they prioritized on top of vaccinations. PCR will not slow transmission rates. If you don't know what's in it, at this point you're a ****ng idiot. And I hope people tell their friends that.
  12. Reminder Eric Feigl-Ding is a clown and a grifter with no immunology or virology background. He merely slaps scary emojis over other people's work to gain followers.
  13. It is a concerning variant, but it is too early too do doomsday vaccine-elicited immunity fails etc. We also don't know how transmissible it is.
  14. People are going to start hearing about the Nu variant soon and the usual media outlets are already starting their desperate fear hyping for clicks routine. Below are the important reminders - until we have actually done pseudo and more importantly, LIVE virus studies nobody knows how this will impact the antibody and cellular immunity produced by the vaccines and infections of different strains. This is not a Delta sublineage.
  15. You can still get measles vaccinated.
  16. Depending on your immune system, how much of an infectious dose you got, how far out from your initial two doses you are etc. you can have a pretty miserable experience iwth breakthrough infections and of course some people still won't make it- especially older and immune compromised. But in this case, had she not been vaccinated it likely would have been really really bad. I'll take serious fatigue all day over the hospital.
  17. That would probably count as mild medically if she does not require oxygen or anything on that level. But I hope she feels better soon.
  18. I don't think they offer rapid antigen unfortunately. Also their website says rapid tests should only be used for people with symptoms. This is completely false - rapid tests aren't positive on symptoms, it is simply about viral load - if you have no symptoms with a high viral load, it will go positive and you can transmit to others. The fact that almost two years into this, we have major healthcare providers still presenting bad information is an embarrassment. I live in NYC, one of the folks on our health committee just yet again said "PCR is gold standard for accuracy", which is not correct. I might look into mobile testing trucks in your area, or you can pick some up at CVS, Walgreens - typically BinaxNOW, which is 97% accurate at detecting contagious-level infections.
  19. Reminder as the holidays come up, leverage rapid tests to keep friends and family safe vs. standing in line for PCR results that come back at a pointless time (24-28 hours in the age of Delta means nothing)
  20. It's a great Monday when both the Wizards and Capitals are on four-game win streaks.
  21. No he isn't but it's also not his job. Wayne Gretzky was not a good two way player and neither was Mario Lemieux. In hockey, being historically good offensively outweighs two-way play. I'm not sure the best defensive player in the NHL has ever also been the best offensive player. The exception might be Bobby Orr. But even when Sergei Fedorov won MVP and Selke (best defensive forward) in 1994 he was not the best offensive player in a league with Jagr, Lemieux and others. Relax, it was a reasonable post.
  22. Everyone let's not get personal! It's just a sports discussion.
