Official 2023 Roster Cuts News & Speculation Thread

Young guy, great athlete, good in pass coverage, excellent work ethic. Sign me up. Another guy I'd take a flyer on over keeping Pringle. -

I didn't view fromm as someone we should carry on the 53 to protect from other teams poaching him. I like that they gave the spot to someone else. However, Zappe may be worth adding to our 53 if we can. Especially as a trade off for a guy like Pringle who is one of 7 WRs and likely won't be here long term. Something to seriously consider at least. -

I'm sure they want to bring him back after they make a couple other moves in the coming days. For anyone thinking we took a risk by cutting fromm, look at the pats who cut a better player in zappe and only have one QB on their active roster as of now. Again that will change but what a punch to the gut it would be if somebody swooped in and claimed. Zappe which I'm sure someone will. I live in New England. I can only imagine sports talk radio right now lol. These fans are not going to like that, especially the Mac haters. -

Ball security. Zero lost fumbles on 77 opportunities last year. 12th in yards per return, not terrible. But I get it, he looks to be nothing special and they would probably like to replace him if they found someone with more juice that they can trust. @kingdaddy that is awesome how you responded to a post, and then right below responded to your own response. I don't think I've ever seen that done before lol. -

Maybe a little reverse psychology? Listen up NFL, Patterson isn't practice squad worthy, bc if he was, we would've cut him tomorrow, so go ahead and remove him from consideration. -

@terpfan had alluded to that earlier too. I was surprised to see it was that low. PFF grades are interesting, but we may be able to get more out of him considering our dline is much better than what Houston had last year. His versatility and experience may allow him to re capture some of his mojo with a much improved supporting cast. Or he is just a veteran in decline, I don't really know either. -

Yessssss!!!! That was my hope, that they IR him. If they don't feel confident putting him into games, it's basically a redshirt. Perfect!! -

Agreed. I believe Colt has beaten us in the past as a member of the Giants. And I also believe he also helped us beat the cowboys in a game where we were heavy under dogs. Too lazy to fact check those. I'd rather face Dobbs who is only been there a short period of time or a rookie like Tune in his first NFL game than face Colt. -

Texans are cutting LB / captain Christian Kirksey. He has done well with both run defense and pass coverage in the past. 30 years old. So Rivera is probably thinking, nothing to see here. -

My reaction watching Milne is that he is a JAG, but I'm probably not giving him enough credit. Bob Carrolls book from 1988 the hidden game of football (it's 35 years old and a bit outdated) says the numbers show an average returner with no fumbles is more valuable than the best returner with 2 fumbles. 2 fumbles is all it takes to squander the value of those extra return yards. I found that pretty interesting. Last year, Milne had 40 punt returns, 22 fair catches, and 15 kickoff returns, and I don't see any fumbles lost for him. He was 12th in punt return yardage at 7.8. Pringle has not returned punts in the NFL, and can we trust Allen? Tinsley did return punts on college, but not sure we want him back there either. It's gonna be hard to keep more than 6 WRs, but I think Milne is going to be one of them. I hope they go Tinsley over Pringle, who is 29 years old, more expensive, and only under team control for one year. Especially considering this is WR5, I'd lean to the young guy. I'd put Allen on PS, and if he gets claimed, I wouldn't be too devastated. I'd rather keep 6 WR over 7, and add an extra body on OL or DL. -
https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/nfl/cardinals/2023/08/21/arizona-cardinals-isaiah-simmons-slammed-kansas-city-chiefs/70645107007/ Just found this. Lack of effort the other day. Seems a bit rash and knee jerky to do that with that a guy with that talent especially for peanuts. But yeah I think Gannon wants to build fresh with his guys.
-
Too bad one of our 3 GMs couldn't make this phone call first. And I hate that he went to a division rival. I'm trying to convince myself that Arizona had a good reason to dump him. With Gannon being a young defensive coach, and he is probably trying to improve a losing culture, maybe Simmons has attitude / work ethics issues. I'm just speculating bc this is pretty disappointing to see so I'm trying to make myself feel better.
-
I do. It's a lot easier to part with a first rounder when you're pretty confident it's on the back end of the round. Also the eagles are clearly in win now mode, and the two backs they have on their roster are injury prone. I'd hate to see it, but I understand why they would do everything they could to make it happen.
-
Agree with A and C. I think we could be a 11-12 win team without Young going off. If he returns to form that would definitely help, but the way our d line still played well with Sweat and Young out goes to show how valuable Allen/Payne are. However, if we are to lose either Allen or Payne, I think we are in trouble. Young could very well be our 4th best DL this year, so if we could get the health of the other 3, along with A and C that you mentioned, I think we win 11+.

I hope so after reading this! ----- After coming away with a big interception in the end zone against the Baltimore Ravens, we're willing to bet Martin is pretty satisfied with the progress he's shown this week. "Definitely did better than last week," Martin said. "Still got some things to clean up on my end but overall a better game I think." https://www.si.com/nfl/commanders/news/washington-commanders-quan-martin-interception-rookie-emmanuel-forbes-draft-react-recap

I don't expect a super bowl run in 2023 with this roster, but by 2024, we could be in a position to contend. 2024-26 could be our window, and Fuller would be 31 in 2026. He should be able to remain a valuable piece to our defense throughout this window. I'd hate to trade him now and not try to keep him in the fold. He is a guy we traded away and then he came back to sign with us, and I'm guessing the fact that he is from the area had something to do with that. And we were a clown show then, with our franchise trending in the right direction, I'm hoping we could extend him without breaking the bank. Between him and the young guys, we can be confident with our DBs, and use draft/FA to focus on other areas.
-
You're probably right, but a lot of that 80 mil could be going into extensions/tag for existing players like sweat/young/curl with the rest mostly being role player type contracts, and then the rookies. Fullers FA departure could also offset one of our acquisitions, and it would still leave a decent comp pick for us if one of those guys above were to leave via FA. Who knows. But aside from comp pick consideration, I still hope they hang onto him. He is good for the DB room and the young guys.
-
Trading Fuller now because we drafted Forbes and BSJ is healthy at the moment, is similar to trading Moses because we drafted Cosmi. And that looks foolish now. Let's not panic the moment we actually have some depth by flushing it down the toilet. And if it's for a JAG like David Sharpe I'm gonna puke. Fuller's experience and versatility will be helpful for the development of the young guys. I don't expect them to trade him. He has a lot more value to us in 2023 given the youth of our secondary then he would to a new team that has to trade assets to acquire a CB in the last year of his deal with a cap hit of 8.5. The comp pick we get when/if he walks after 2023 will probably be at least as good as any return we get in a trade.
