To qualify that a bit I do think they recognize that O'Line is a need. It seems like they had eyes on some of the higher ranked O'line as possible first round picks and if one of those had fallen I suspect they would have taken the O'line over DB. When their guys had gone they didn't reach which I 100% agree with and there wasn't someone in that 2nd round range they were in (or could get to) that would have been plug and play so I agree broadly with what they did there as well, though they could have been more aggressive..

I didn't follow the free agent market enough to know what was available or possible. Riser is still out there though and would probably be a day 1 starter here at LG.

But I do think Rivera feels comfortable going with lower cost vets and trusting they can develop in house past mid round draft picks into starters. They drafted another couple of guys this year mid round they no doubt hope to develop. Thats great if it works out but a big problem if it doesn't and unless you strike gold with a 4th rounder it almost guarantees the ceiling on your line is 'good but not great' with a floor thats much lower than that.

I actually feel O line play will be better this year... I laugh at all the pundits that say Wash O line is even worse this year than last year.  Biggest hole last year was Center.. period. Without a decent center the rest of the line falls apart. RT play wasnt good also. It now looks like we have 2 at least above avg centers that dont have an inj history. Combine that with a different O system (more zone blocking, quicker passing, etc. and I believe the O line will perform better.

All in all though.. this FO has not shown aptitude for finding or understanding good O line players. (their oline solution in 2022 was horrendous)  If Riverra could see past his nose, he would create a forward looking strategy for finding players... meaning find O line players in strong O line drafts, and focus on other areas in weak ones.  Its my other gripe with Riverra.. all his actions are reactionary. No planning, no foresight.. He is playing checkers while the rest of the NFL is playing chess.

  2. Ive been pretty vocal in my dislike of Ron as a HC/GM. Great guy, good person but a crappy HC and I see zero value in keeping him around for any other role with the team. Call me a hater if you want... but these are all reasons that would have caused any HC to be fired if we had a half decent owner with half a brain and less of his own duchery.

    1. Non winning record

    2. Inability to land a half decent QB in 4 years and getting fleeced in the trades for bad QBs

       a. Kyle Allen for a 5th.. when nobody wanted him

       b. Wentz .. we all know that one

    3. Underperforming D - Inability to get the most out of a D with so much 1st rd talent and good players until 2nd half of last season from a D minded HC is unfathomable. Yes, i hold him responsible for poor hires.

    4. Poor drafting as a whole - especially in the upper rounds.

    5. Poor hiring - Turner > giving him an extension and then firing him

    6. General baffoonery when he opens his mouth

I appreciate that he had to deal with a **** owner and "team culture" is better... whatever that means, but in the end the results speak for themselves.

  3. I dont give a **** what Ron wants. (its been widely shown he does not have the mental fortitude to GM a franchise)  Hard Knocks is what this team NEEDS!

Its a great story.. and a perfect opportunity:

    1. Team just got sold and renamed recently

    2. New ownership, new blood, new direction as a franchise

    3. Great story lines with Howell, Young, Terry

    4. David / Goliath angle since this team is viewed as the bottom dweller of the NFCE

    5. Finally and most importantly ... get fans of the team excited and put butts in seats.

Wash would be dumb NOT to do it.. and of course they wont.

  4. It was more like an Offense didn't scare anyone.. so even though our D was legit.. teams felt they could tire them out and score enough to walk away with a win.

Having at least at average O will pay dividends 5 fold.

    - more fresh as they spend less time on the field

    - D can play more aggressive to get turnovers

    - Reduce chance of injury due to less time on the field

  5. With more zone blocking and addition of youth I actually feel ok with O line this year. I hated the O-line last year and that concern was validated.... With solid depth, youth and hopefully an O-coordinator that is smart enough to adjust protection mid-game.. we might be ok.m Not great by any means.. but OK. The only concern i have is the back up LT, If Leno goes down we're in trouble... although that could be said for most NFL teams that lose a starting LT

Just my own opinion on what I think happens with both Curl and Sweat.

Opinion based on what? i disagree...  Both will play. This is just posturing for a new contract. Not only will they lose eligibility for fa if they dont play... they look very poor to any team that might want to sign them and neither plays a position where replacements cant be found. Plus history has shown us that sitting out on purpose has never benefited a player. They are still under contract, they will play.

I was listening to Willingham, 106.7 radio host who does late night radio.  He goes to their camps and knows some around the team.

He said last night, he's heard about the rumbilings of the team having off the field issues with Chase.  Yet, he thought Chase the competitor will come to play this season.

He's the third personality who covers this team who had made vague references to Chase off the field.  Heck even Rivera has referenced Chase's immaturity again and again and again.  But lol, I'd love to know what the issues actually are?

I've heard enough that they don't love his off season committment to the team and to his craft but it feels like its something beyond that.

I love the talent that Chase has.  And from what I saw he seems like a good dude from a good family.  But something feels off.

FO messed up by not trading him this off season while he still has some value (assuming there was interest)  By the time next off season rolls around he will have zero value... and will be gone with the rest of this sh!tty coaching staff i hope.

Don't know how legit that source is but if its true, I'd be annoyed if I were Mayhew too -- looks like the Colts want to push this hard.

So i presume there was no discussion about Luck with the Colts.   Otherwise they seem silly to pursue this.

Lesson for this FO, IMO keep your mouth shut with all the self-hype and self congratulations for among other reasons you haven't accomplished even a winning record yet.  Their desire for self promotion is why this is an issue in the first place.

But yeah I'd have a beef with the Colts FO.  This is round two of Ballard being really obnoxious even though he is by reputation a good guy.  Round 1:  Crapping on Wentz and by extension this team after making the trade.  That's out of bounds.  You don't crap on your trading partner by crapping on the player they just acquired.  Round 2.  Is this.

The balls on Ballard!!?  After he bent Mayhew over on the Wentz trade, he is doubling down to try to get more pick for Luck tampering. ... Cant blame him.

We had a bad draft? Our whole Secondary is top 5 in the NFL now. With a Top 5 DL. WR core is also at least Top 10 with Top 5 potential. RBs Top 12ish. Average TE group. O Line is Top 12ish with potential to be higher. QB is a question for sure and LB is question but we play 2 or less LBs at a time what like 80% of the time. Our team is young and now we are in a position where we can see what Howell has. If he hits then we are contenders for a long time. If he doesn't hit then we can trade the farm next year to move up and get a QB. People want everything fixed in one off-season. That doesn't happen. This team is getting built the right way. In almost 40 years of being a fan of this team I'm excited again for the first time in a long time. We are 1 stud LB away from being a very special D. And we have enough weapons on offense to win games. Especially if this D gets is turnovers, short Fields and possibly scores for us.

I am going to hold off on my draft eval .. although this FO hasn't exactly lit it up the last few years.

These guys haven't played a down yet so you cant say we have a top 5 secondary... we had an average at best secondary last year.. and top5 is quiet a jump.

Overall they drafted for need obviously .. i am ok with it. We needed secondary help and needed O-line so they went with what was there. The issue is that Rivera has had 3 years to fix the QB position (the by far most important role in football) and has whiffed repeatedly. I am hoping he doesn't get to whiff again next year and we have a new real coach that know what the hell he is doing.

Agreed. I’d ship him out on balance.

Only caveat, Quan may start at FS and Fuller insider with Forbes and BSJ outside. That works.

Best end of 9m for the season is still too rich for my money though. Most FO would be moving him on or restructuring in my opinion.

Even playing nickel he is largely a liability... i am actually surprised this FO hasnt approached him about a pay cut.. maybe they are waiting to see what they have in the rookies. Or more likely this FO is largely incompetent and while every other GM is playing chess... Ron is playing plinko

  11. I dont get this fear with losing Fuller, the guy is a below average corner at this stage.. and was nothing special to begin with. It doesn't make sense to cut him because rookie corners are completely unproven but at his current contract its a bad deal. If fuller is force to play outside again... we are in trouble.

Please tell me you’re joking.  I’m stunned that so many fans are talking themselves into seeing Howell as a franchise QB.  People need to pump their brakes, and remember that he’s essentially a rookie QB next year, with one start to his name.  If he succeeds, great, but the odds are against him in succeeding.

People need to reel in on the optimism.  I don’t want the fan base to set themselves up for major disappointment, especially if Jacoby Brissett ends up playing some games this year, or God forbid, wins the QB starter role worst case scenario.

I'd like to introduce you to my friend Sar Casm....

  13. Young has minimal trade value... but it was the move i wad advocating the whole time. If this does not light a fire under him, nothing will... and he will join sh!t GM Ron on the unemployment line.  I would guess Sweat might be worth a late 1st or 2nd.. but at this point we have to keep him for this D to produce.

Indeed. There is still big upside there. And I’d bet there are other teams who feel the same. Which is why I think we can get a first rounder for him. Even a second rounder, in this year‘s draft, would get us a solid starting corner or tight end on a rookie deal. I could easily be wrong of course, and I really hope I am, but my guess is he’s a bust and the longer we wait to trade him the less we are going to get.

every player has upside... nobody trades for upside. Okudah just got traded for a 5th rd pick... Wash will be lucky to get a 3rd back for CY
