  1. Harris and Peters really fudged the pooch on this one eh?  the number 1 vacancy option and we are left to sort through the trash no one else wanted?  You're telling me they didn't know the roundpark figure of what Ben Johnson wanted before Det got kicked out of playoffs???   I'd be OK with Vrabel though

  2. The most you can get in a trade is 3 future 1st rd picks i believe. But lets say someone does make a godfather offer with multitude of pics and players. I would be ok with trading for Fields for high 3rd or maybe 3, 5 as a reclamation project and drafting a QB or two mid first and later in the draft if you like them. Depending on what system Peters and Johnson decide to install.. if we follow the 49er model.. you could plug in any decent QB with high end results.

Despite the flaws I feel Kirk Cousins has in his game, let's face it, the 49ers went to a Superbowl with Jimmy G, and now back to back NFC Championships (potential for a SB win) with Brock Purdy.  Let's not act like Cousins with that roster couldn't at least do the same thing.

EDIT: I forgot to hit the reply button, this was obviously a reply to some of the Cousins to SF chatter a few pages back.

yeah .. thats what got Vikings in to trouble... they were 13-3 in 2017 with Sam (freaking) Bradford and Case Keenum

thinking was.." well we have a stacked roster, 'Kurt' will get us over the edge"...  in 2018 they went 8-7-1 with Cousins, 2019 10-6, etc

Justin Fields isn’t a good qb and likely will be out if the league in 3-4 years.

Sam can have a good backup career and maybe gets a shot at starting in a better environment.

We have the #2 qb. While the top 3 aren’t certainly locks, we are drafting one of those qbs.

The only way Sam might of gotten a shot here is if we didn’t have a Top 5 pick.

Anyone that bets their future with Fields , whether that’s Chicago or some other team; they are likely to be fired.

agreed... Fields is not the answer. Also with recent changes to the NFL... a backup qb is a very important commodity and requires a highly skilled qb (just below starter quality) as there is a very good chance he will play in multiple games per season

Issue is for backup QB you want:

    1. Experienced veteran that can help a rookie learn a new system, be a sounding board, show how to prepare for games, etc. Sam is too new and inexperienced to help in this way.

    2. Be good enough to win games in a pinch

Sam at this point is not a good backup QB.. at best he is a #3. Now he might learn and get better and actually become a starting QB at some point, he has the tools. But the way he finished, i am not sure I can trust him to come in and win a game. I would love to keep Brisset, not sure we will though.

After every draft some regulars here including me often have give or take 10 guys on our radar, its amazing Ron would grab zero of them and just about always every team in our division would grab one or two of those UDFAs.  Only UDFA Ron signed that I recall touting that I wanted as a late rounder was Jaret Patterson.

Not that UDFA is the be all and end all.  But to build a team be aggressive on all counts.  And Ron didn't have an aggressive bone in his body.

I actually use Ron for drafting.. for every player i am interested in, i ask myself... "what would Ron do?"  .. and then do the opposite.

Question for the familly: Does Sam  become a good pick in the 5th round as a backup QB? In other words, keep him around, teach him the new system, coach him up and get him ready for when he is called on due to injury? While keeping him, is there a way we can increase his value over the next 2 years where we can maybe get a 2nd for him or something along those lines? Most QB's taken in the 5th round would be just fine making the gameday roster and sitting behind a guy who has a better pedigree/draft ranking so to speak. Sam is somewhat differents because he got a chance to start with an organization that was desperate to see him run with the opportunity. If nothing else he's cheap, has NFL experience and is very tough if needed. Maybe this could be a good way of looking at Sam moving forward?

i dont see it. Most NFL execs aren't "that" dumb (sorry Ron)  Howell played like a 5th rd pick. If he gets an opportunity to start due to an inj sometime down the line for at least 5 games and balls out.. there might be a little interest. Look at Baker.. drafted #1, had one bad season and could barely find a job last year.  From what ive seen over the last 5 games, he is not even Minshew quality at this point.

Yeah I think Ron Rivera has made a little money so he doesn’t have to work another day in his life

I actually think his contract stipulates that he has to give back 1mil for every loss.... pretty sure he is broke🥲

  8. lol.. well now apparently everyone sees what i was saying for the last 2 years.. that Ron is an idiot. The level of mismanagement of personnel, draft, talent and scheme over the last few years is borderline criminal. I wouldn't trust him to cut my lawn.

The ONE thing he is good at is LOOSING... and now he cant go back to Howell no matter what. which means we have a good shot of winning one of the next few games and knocking us out of the top 5 pick range for a real qb. He is the first person i know to fnck up loosing!

Qb bust at a very very high rate. Howell probably proven enough that he could easily be a game manager with enough talent. It's going to cost draft capital to move up to get one of top two Qb. See what Howell does next year then move up for a qb. Next season is going to be bad again. A couple FA will not turn us around very quickly.

There are alot more teams that have one superbowl championship with non franchise Qb in the last 10 years.  He is not Brady or Mahomes but he could be as good as Foles, Flacco, Wilson, Staford and Eli Manning who have all won in last ten years.

umm... Wilson, Stafford and Eli are all franchise QBs. Foles and Flaco won on fully stacked teams and in the old NFL.. they would not have won in todays NFL. Can you win with a fully stacked team and an above avg QB today.. probably, but we are a lot farther from a fully stacked team, than from one Franchise QB

I keep seeing people say this and no one explains why Williams or Maye are considered franchise level QBs. What do they do that makes them so good you can’t pass on them?

I am not saying they aren’t good. I want to make sure my take is transparent: they are both good QBs that could have a bright future. However, this years QB class has been overhyped for 2.5 years now.

I don't get paid enough (or at all) to make that determination. Both QBs have put enough on tape to be considered upper level talent at the most important position in the NFL but i am not advocating for either one.

Are you guarantied to hit on a QB in the top 5? no.. see how quickly Tepper turned on his coach and GM when they obviously made the wrong QB pick. But that your best shot at finding a franchise QB and a franchise QB can turn your team around in the same season with good coaching even if the talent around him is nothing special.

    1. You hire a very good GM and HC

    2. You let them rate current QB talent and draft talent.

    3. If they determine that there is an incredibly talented QB in the top 5 and your pic is close... you try to trade up or make the QB pic.

Ultimately if i am looking for a QB to lead my team he has to hit these checkboxes.

    - mobile

    - strong arm

    - intelligent and quick decision maker

    - Big _6'3-6'5

If he does not meet all the above checks, he will be at disadvantage in the NFL (no matter how accurate, quick, smart he is).. the odds will be stacked against him in todays NFL

And if you miss on the QB.. fine, you try again next year.. you have the rest of your draft class to hit on other players but if your team is at least semi average you wont be picking in the top 5 again for a while, and the cost of trading up from lets say 12 to 2 is enormously high

To many other holes on this team to worry about Qb right now. Howell may or may not be the longterm Qb but has played well enough to get another year with better talent. This team needs players at pretty much every position.

That's the kind of thinking that got us where we are now. If you're picking in the top 5 pics and you don't have a set franchise QB, and one with that potential is available.. you take that  QB and build a team around him. With proper coaching and some FAs this team can be rebuild pretty quick.. at least on the O side.

  12. it cant really get much worse than this... Wash pretty much hit rock bottom under Rivera..... Culture is damn good though!

    1. Looking at Rons dumb face after every blow out reeks of a man who lost faith and has no answers(never really did)

    2. The team has obviously quit on this coaching staff

    3. we wont win another game this year..

only positive - top 5 pick next year.
