Let it go. Willy Wonka was expressing a legitimate point of view. When Osama Bin Laden died, I was happy. But I also felt weird that I was feeling happy that someone was dead. It felt inappropriate to cheer death like that. I believe I said so at the time. So did Henry and several others. WW has expressed no approval of Kim Jong Il, so there is no reason to press this point forever.

I would be incredibly shocked. The Korean people have their own ethnicity, history, language and mythology. They do not consider themselves Chinese at all. Add in the fact that China doesn't want them.

No, it really isn't. China tries to use them, but North Korea runs on its own weird dynamic. The wikileaks cables showed just how much NK embarasses China. But for historic and geopolitic reasons, China is stuck with this "ally," no matter how stupid North Korea gets. Kind of the way we in the US are stuck with Pakistan as our "ally." Above all, what China wants is stability and border control in North Korea. They don't want the regime to collapse and allow millions of hungry refugees to run across the border into China. This I agree with. It is Orwellian.

More simple question. I've got a 1991 VW Cabriolet. It still has the original shocks and struts, so I feel every bump in the road and it rattles like a mofo. Do I need to go to a VW specialist to get that stuff swapped out, or can I just go to someplace generic like Big O Tires or Midas?

Well, as a practical matter, the USA tends to support despots in the Middle East who support us and our goals (and Mubarak is one of those guys). Meanwhile, we tend to be afraid of democracy in many Middle East countries because we know that if they are allowed to vote freely, the people there are very likely to elect governments who are hostile to the USA (and Israel), or even elect hardline Muslim theocracies. In the long run, democracy is a good thing, but in the short run, it's going to lead to a lot of countries run by guys like the Muslim Brotherhood. It's not an easy call from the USA point of view.

Well, they're Muslims. Duh.

Interesting article on this in the Economist. Tunisia is far from the poorest country in the Arab World, and its people were not particularly oppressed - as long as they didn't say anything political or challenge the status quo of kleptocracy by the ruling family.
