I've held a similar viewpoint for about 10 years, but I don't expect you to remember all the nuances I've shared, so I'll try to recap lol.

I generally lean towards supreme athletes at the quarterback spot because I believe they tend to yield positive outcomes early in their rookie contracts more consistently than other quarterbacks. It doesn't necessarily require them to be elite processors or outsmart the established stars in the league. I'm aiming for a high floor and immediate ceiling, fully aware that someone like Daniel might not be playing in years 12-17 as much as Maye, and I'm fine with that.

That said, I'm not discounting Maye; I'm intrigued by his moxie and ability to play off schedule. I prefer a supreme athlete with clean throwing mechanics as a starting point , knowing that the run game will likely be top 5 and the offensive line will benefit greatly from his talent from day one as a starter. I'm a sucker for that while on a rookie deal. With Maye, there are more unknown variables; we'll have to hope he's super smart, maniacal about his process, an elite processor, and can become more accurate.

I'm not sure where the narrative of Daniel not making throws off schedule has come from, as his highlights are filled with these throws. I do agree that he lacks the ability to throw from different platforms.

I'm not suggesting that it's right or wrong at this stage, but I continue to lean towards this preference in most years. I'll admit that I prefer Caleb Williams over Jaden Daniels, even though he's not as much of a rushing quarterback, but he’s extremely accurate.

I am trying to think of a supreme QB athlete who has won a S.B. and that is the goal. I can think of many processors that are not super athletes. Brady, Stratford, Mahomes, Manning's, Foles, Rogers, Roethlisberger........ No winners that I can find?  He does not have to be a super athlete for me, and does not have to be a super runner. A RB has a short life in the NFL, why draft a hybird RB/QB? His career is going to be shorter most likely if you use him that way.

That'll make a lot of quarterbacks winners won't it.

Running the ball and clock control will win games too keeping the other team off the field. Having a QB that moves the sticks in crunch time wins the big games too.  The (Harbaughs) teams play together. It's not that they have the best players on Defense, it's they have a lot of good players all over the team in every phase and they work together. LSU, Wash, Oregon have the better skill players.  Like the Ravens, Michigan coaches, player leadership, run, pass, block, play D, special teams...Complete game that's why they gave up 28 points 1 time and they played the best doing it. That's what Champions do!

  3. least excited for Daniels. (If they draft him I hope I am wrong).  His Age, Body/Style of play. move him down for me. He had the one of the most talented offensive teams around him last year. 2 of his WR's could be all pro's in the NFL. His running is a plus but like Bob that does not turn the needle for me.

Maye last year did not have the Offense talent like 2022. He is young and I much prefer his age/Body style of play. Some compare him to Herbert who is a favorite of mine.  I could get excited at 2.

J.J. Played on a all around team with a lot good players on Offense not great. Has won everywhere he has been, State. HS champ, Nat. HS champ Nat. College champ. I prefer his age and leader style. But not at 2 and with a slight trade down (that would be a surprise) because he may sit a year or may not. I could get excited. I wanted Howell to be here too just in case.

I cannot get excited for Penix because of injuries and mobility in the pocket.  Played on the most talented offensive team WR's and OL overall. If we took him in a major trade down late 1 early 2 I would be okay.

Williams will not be in play. I have not been for a move up to 1 also. Not sure Nix get's drafted in the 1st.

Maye is the no.1 choice for me.

    J.J. at 2/5 is no.2 choice

Be okay and not very excited with the other 2, but could be won over.

Has been this way for me all the way through and the Howell trade sealed the deal.

Whatever happens I hope they get it right. They have choices and I will be on board.

With one of the greatest defenses ( I think the 91/92 Eagles D was better than the 85 Bears), HoF QB and WR and still couldn't win a SB.

Dent,Hamton, Marshall.... carried that team to a S.B. win. I go with the 85 Bears best ever. Did they ever play a Champ. game while Buddy was there.  Eagles were the best at trash talking, no dou't about that. NYG. D was up there too in that Era.  Reggie White, Lawerence Taylor best ever. Gibbs owned Buddy in the playoffs.

Fields has a combined compensation this year of $3m, including roster bonus and salary. His salary cap hit is $3m.

The Steelers have until May 2nd to pick up his 5th year option, which would be at $22m.  They will clearly not do that.

So, they basically used a 2025 6th on a backup QB who will be a FA at the end of the season.  Is it worth it?  Sure.

There's no risk to this.  A 2025 6th for a backup QB is good value.  If he plays, and it turns into a 2025 4th, then wonderful.

They can choose to sign him or not after the season.

The only risk would be Fields starts, is absolutely PHENOMINAL, and they have to franchise tag or sign him to a $40m/year contract.  Where they would probably have liked to have had that 5th year option picked up.  But, the chances of that are slim.

So, eh.  They get a super cheap backup with some talent for this year.

So they are playing it out? I see no risk either of the QB's maybe a comp pick for the loser down the road if some team still wants them.

Agreed. There was chatter this past offseason that he could be an MVP candidate. Madness. He has been straight up garbage passing the ball.

We got more value out of trading Sam Howell for a reason. (He can actually throw the ball)

I took a lot bullets for Sam early and often throughout, but it became clear there was not going to be a trade down and keeping him on the team as a backup or spot starter with the free agency haul. He took a lot of shots in hear too. Good spot for him in Seattle.

Someone was talking about Penix Pressure to sack ratio on I think a player profiler podcast the other day and they were astounded by it, he's miles, miles, miles, miles better at making the right decision with the ball than Daniels, or really anyone else in the class, period. He throws it away, he does not take a lot of stupid sacks, EVER.. And he played for years in the Big-10 so it's not just a Pac-10 defenses suck argument. It's weird to say this because I want no part of Penix due to injury history and age, but honestly if we'd ended up at slot 7-10 instead of 2, I think I would have much preferred trading down for Penix rather than up for Daniels. Other than health issues, I think Penix has a higher floor than Daniels. Just a better decision maker.

I was wondering about Penix too and those no.s and what I think about the chart, My opinion, he sucks at moving around to get a throw off so he does not. He is going to stay in there when every other QB as already put their feet to work. He got beat up by Mich. and it cost them the game. He should have threw the ball away instead of just chucking it down field and getting picked. Daniels takes off way to early and uses his feet as a weapon while not looking to throw. Caleb does the Mahomes act passing from any position behind the line and makes more time to throw. Maye is moved off because he has no choice and can throw on the run and run enough to extent the play. McCarthy drops back less but when moved he can make the throws while moving and he has some wheels too.

Kurl is may be proof of what I'd call damaged goods. Maybe even all our free agents, that aren't getting top dollar. I am record for wanting RR/JDR both s'canned the moment the sale was complete yes a brief 8 weeks before week 1 in large part so our best players wouldn't continue to be ruined by the worst coaching staff in the league. Waste a year of their short careers. I know I know its impossible to have named interim coaches EB/Kerrigan for the year and get rid of those 2 losers as a priority. But good players on the worst defense and crap team overall - we killed the value of our own players on a punted season for what exactly, to respect Ron?

Maybe Sam Howell aside. Or, maybe not.

K.Curl hurt himself a lot with his message to Wash. Then got screwed by all the safties being dropped right after.

Hoffman loves the value we got for Howell.

Thinks this increases the probability we use some of those picks to trade back up into the 1st round to get a quality rookie LT.

Also said this is a 90 player draft, then theres a significant dropoff. Having 6 picks in the top 100 gives us a load of highly coveted draft capital.

    .

That's the feeling I get too once you get to the 4th and up rds. in mock drafts nothing really stands out like past years. Get your picks early seems like the ticket because there is not a lot later.

Mike Williams from Chargers could be an option, the Lynn connection and he is a big time player (when healthy)

One point in his parting message to Charger fans was he is going to look for a new QB to throw to him. Not seeing it here at the moment.

On paper we traded 145.8 in draft value and received 230.8.

    So amazing for us.

But that's with Howell being worth the 144th pick in the 2022 draft. If you value Howell at a 3rd round pick or higher then Seattle got the better value.

2022 Howell 5th rd. 1st pick > 2024 Low 3rd rd. pick per trade chart numbers?  So how did Seattle get the better deal? Value at 3rd = trade comp 3rd?  Just going by what was posted as comp per chart by others. Anyway you look at it a low 3rd is greater than a 5th.

I’d say both Curl and Curtis Samuel are worth considering…..but only on team friendly deals. No way would I overpay. Less interested in a Fuller return. Lucas as swing tackle would be an option for me.

Davis getting shipped out for a mid/late round pick wouldn’t surprise me.

I thought K.Curl released a cryptic message saying he would not sign here about a day before all the safeties were dropped? I was thinking you burned your bridges. Not sure if it was fake or  just read it somewhere?

You have no evidence to support your claim, that matters, bro.

I have no problem moving this to a QB thread, but you repeating this claim like it's fact doesn't make it so.

You even used the term redshirt, which to me last I checked means an entire year.  I opening door for anyone to show some precedent to picking a QB #2 overall if they need the whole first year to get ready to play at this level.  Otherwise, that's a no from me, dawg.

Who keeps bringing this up and posting it, not me? I have only replied to posts. Is this a court trial? Evidence, Precedence? Do I have to get a Lawyer? It's a opinion, I would sit a QB if he was not ready no matter where he was picked even no.2 and you have your opinion.  You would like him to start no matter the case.

How many QBs in this link were drafted #2 or higher and got redshirt, let alone redshirted and it worked out forvthem and the team that drafted them?

Who cares they are all different people, my point is they do not have to start right away, yours is they do. We already covered that.

Because only 9 QBs survived through 17 starts last season and only 2 QBs have started every game over the last 2 seasons.

QBs take a beating - they get injured.

I agree on the injury thing too. I want to keep Howell and they added another Vet, good. So if the rookie is not ready and Howell had a bad 2nd half. does that not give you depth at QB to make a start if needed? We need 3 QBs we got lucky last year not the years before.  This was a response to the rookie has to start. Not if you have a couple Vets on the bench and you are not ready.

Mariota was gone by the time Heinicke arrived there.  He's a better QB than Ridder.  But they wanted to try out their new car to see if it can ride and discovered it doesn't.  But they had to give it a spin of course.

I don't think the idea is Mariota > Howell.    Mariota is a backup.    He had his shot.  It wasn't awful. 90 career QB rating.  Almost 2:1 TD to INT ratio.  But not good enough to be a starter.  Fine as a backup.

As for Howell, if a team wants to give him a shot to compete for a job and this team can get decent draft capital in return then I gather the idea is why not get a young player, especially if its a 3rd rounder who can be part of the future of the team.

While have not given up on Howell as a decent QB I think if you like one in the draft and can get him on a rookie contract, keeping Howell till you do is what I would want.

  17. 6 minutes ago, Conn said:

You get the QB at the first opportunity that you can, because the opportunity is rare. You can’t just plan to get him in the second offseason and have it happen.

They do not come from anywhere. They overwhelmingly come from the top of the 1st round, and all analytics bear that out. The fact that you can name all of the exceptions is why they are exceptions.

Also you quoted someone saying to trade Howell after preseason and somehow misread it as a post supporting keeping Howell as the potential franchise QB. The definition of seeing what you want to see lol

Sorry corrected my wording.  What I meant , to the question of if you knew Howell and were would you draft him? I would take a shot because of what I saw the first half and what happened the 2nd. half. I would take that shot in the 2nd.  And they do come from anywhere, just to disagree with that point. S.B. is the goal and they are not coming from the top only. But that has run it;s course in here, pretty sure we are picking a top one. Back to the draft.
