JimboDaMan
Since this is a lateral move, we shouldn't get something from the Lions?

Or did that big bad greedy Dan Snyder waive his right to compensation, just like he did last year with Ray Rhodes?

Or did we forfeit any compensation by first saying he was to be fired, then taking that back? Guest Trevor
He was fired. The Skins didn't nor couldn't take it back. What they did was reconsidered him for the job, but he was no longer a part of the coaching staff at that time.
NavyDave
Darn it that would have been a great strategic move too.

Rat_Boy
Yeah, unfortunately, Dan Snyder fired the whole lot.

No compensation for anyone on the old staff.

Add that to the fact that Tags will probably screw us on compensation picks, and will probably just have our 6 picks. (7 minus 1 for Marty.)
Terry
Hey Ratty, what are doing over here?

Cute dress!

Darth Tater
Even if we had not fired him, we might have wanted to let him go without getting any compensation because of how the rest of the owners feel after paying SOS all that green. Heck, Danny needs to make some allies among the owners:)
Rat_Boy
If you can't beat'em, JOIN'em! No really, I just think I need MORE message board action.

Maybe if I post here a bit, I won't clog up CPND with tons of posts.
Jimbo
Don't be so sure we'll be screwed on compensation picks. Since Johnson, Thrash and Derek Smith helped their teams make the playoffs, we should at least get one 5th round pick plus a pair of 6th rounders.

My understanding is the highest compensation available in a 4th rounder but the player usually has to make the Pro Bowl for that to happen.

Since Thrash tied Staley for the team lead in receptions and the Eagles made it to the NFC Championship game, that should be grounds for a 5th round compensatory pick.

Smith and Johnson were both starters on playoff teams so that should be grounds for two 6th round compensatory picks.

If we receive anything less, complaints should abound and Tags should be forced to share a motel room for a month with Al Davis. Rat_Boy
True.

But we also picked up some FA's that played very well, especiall on our OL where our RB just broke the franchise record AGAIN.

Who knows what will happen, but I agree, I think we should get SOME picks.

How many is the question. Die Hard
JimboDaMan - Think about what you're saying for a second. Since Gibbs left has there been a Redskins coach or assistant worth draft picks?

Ray Rhodes, by virtue of his defense ranking #4 overall, was our best opportunity. And Marty squandered it.

I think last offseason was the end of the phase of compensating players/draft picks for coaches.
chiefhogskin48
I think this should clear up a lot of the misconceptions about compensatory picks. The first compensatory picks were given out at the end of the 3rd round last year, with Dallas, Jacksonville, and Buffalo receiving picks.

http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/football/nfl/2001/draft/compensatory.htm
Darth Tater
Who did we sign that has compensetory value?
Rat_Boy
Kevin Lockett, Ki-Jana Carter, Ben Coleman, and Dave Szott.

It's the two OL guys I worry about. They started on the line that opened holes for the NFC's leading rusher.
NavyDave
Well maybe we'll get one in the fourth round
Darth Tater
Rat_Boy,

Thanks for that list, I couldn't remembe. From my understanding of the phrase, only Kevin Lockett and Ben Coleman. I believe the others were waived by their previous teams so wouldn't they be street fas?. Rat_Boy
Yea, but I don't think that matters.

I believe they have some formula, and take all the people we lost to FREE AGENCY, and then compare to the ones we gained via FREE AGENCY.

All the guys I listed were FA's of some type, so they count.

I still think we ended in the negative, and should get a pick or two. Montilar
From memory, the free agents signed by Marty who contributed in some form:

1) Ben coleman
2) Dave Szott
3) Tony Banks (as disgusting as it was)
4) The fullback from KC whose name excapes me for the moment)
5) Lockett
6) Otis leverette (minimal but he did play some)
7) Dorian Boose (for part of season)
8) Jones at LB
9) Keith Lyle
10) Kent Graham
11) Matt Campbell
12) The blocking TE
13) Ethan Albright (long snapper)
14) Conway (Kicker)
15) the punter
16) Ki-Jana Carter
17) Greer

Now list the free agent losses:
The most significant were Brad, Derek Smith, Thrash, kalu, Greg Jones. Tre, Stubblefield and those who were cut DO NOT count.

[ January 31, 2002: Message edited by: Montilar ]
Darth Tater
quote:
Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

Reads to me like compensatory fa's lost less compensatory fa's signed. I assume then that those signed are only compensatory for the same reason the guys we lost were compensatory. So, based on the list provided by Montilar (thanks), I'd think we'd have 3 (Brad, Derek Smith, Thrash) - 3 (Coleman, Lockett, Cambell all the others were street fas at time of signing) which equals 0. We might get one because the loss of Brad and Thrash could be considered major. Of course, Danny has made some enemies in the NFL front office.
