CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith was helped off the field with an injury to his left leg in the fourth quarter of the Panthers' game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday night.

Coach John Fox said after the 24-14 loss that Smith broke his fibula, but he gave no details about how long the receiver might be out.

Smith was injured when he was tackled after a catch by Hannibal Navies with 4:52 to play. Navies fell on Smith's left leg while he pulled the receiver down from behind near the Carolina sideline.
