Eagles fans not loyal ????

first off... jbooma, just noting that I am following the extremeskins rules and this is my 1 allowable Eagles thread per day....

..not that any of you care... but i've been involved in a few discussions about fan loyalty.... and please note, this thread is in no way taking ANY kind of shot, nor even saying anything about Skins fans loyalty...... at all....

just sharing this story... and yes, it was from the Eagles "official" site and written by the Eagles writer Spads..... and no, I wasn't there today so I can't verify the numbers..... but if it's even anything close to 25K people on a weekday practice... you have to admit ... that is pretty impressive...

"I've never seen anything like this," said Eagles defensive end Jevon Kearse. "Not only today, but every day at camp. Eagles fans are incredible."

Friday's morning practice was clearly evidence of that as over 25,000 people successfully managed to make the trek to Lehigh. That number was easily the largest attendance in Eagles training camp history and is believed to be the largest number of people to watch a single-team training camp practice in a non-stadium venue in league history.

Thousands more were not able to reach the practice field as traffic built up all around the surrounding area.

"It was like the Field of Dreams," quipped Eagles head coach Andy Reid, who needed a police escort to navigate through traffic as he returned to the dormitory after practice.

... hope you all have a great weekend and enjoy this weather we're having here in DC...... looking forward to your game on Monday..... thank GOD Football is back.

Not taking anything away from your reporting because you are just doing your job as an Eagles fan on a Redskins board, but 25k sounds excessive. I mean, do they not have jobs to go to? Did they shut down all of Philadelphia to attend a practice? I mean, c'mon. This is in no way against you, but against the reporting that you took from. That CAN't be right...good deal on your part tho, finding that.

But still, :eaglesuck

I will add that how many of these fans are fair weather fans. The Eagles expectations are the SB. They added pieces in the off-season to achieve that goal. How many of those fans would be out there if the Eagles were 5-11 last year? True fans are measured in their support when their team is in a down cycle. Look at this board as an example. What has the skins done in the last 10 years? Gibbs may be back, but so far the skins have won nothing and the Eagles are sitting on top of the division with SB aspirations. Remember back when they were losing. How many fans showed up then?

That's a good point. Most of the Eagles fans I see today were Cowboys fans several years ago, then Rams fans. 4 years ago, Eagles fans were around, but nowhere NEAR what they are now & I KNOW they haven't always been Eagles fans, although you could never get them to admit that!

Well you know CSA not all fans can be as loyal and devoted as you and Fred Jones sticking with their team through thick and thin and not just jumping on the bandwagon when something good happens and I'm sure it's just a coincidence that both you guys signed up to talk about the Skins here at the same time Gibbs came back.....just a coincidence.

I have read reports saying they had an estimated 10,000 for one of their morning practices.

full house with 30,000 people on waiting list for season tickets. Now it's 60,000 on the waiting list, and still packed every game.

the 10K was Wednesday I believe... the official count for today will be released later...

Eagles officials said a crowd total would be available later in the day, but they indicated the turnout appeared to far exceed the record 11,000 who showed up earlier this week.

the waiting list is true... but it's not true that FedEx is packed every game... say what you will ... but I've been to many games there... not just Eagles v Skins.... quite a few of the corp seats go empty... and the last few years, towards the end of the season when the Skins have long been out of it you'd be lucky if 75% of that stadium has people sitting in the seats... and i'm being generous w/ the 75%

Even if it is only 75% full that's still about 70k in that big stadium.

Pocono, my signing up to this site and Gibbs return have nothing to do with each other. I have been a loyal fan for a long time. I did not know this site existed until January of this year. I don't spend a lot of time on the computer chatting away. This is the only site I visit with any regularity. I have other things to do in life.

For the last 10 or so years life has not been pleasant during the NFL season with the Redskins continuing to lose, however, I was always a fan. I have never been a fan of any other NFL team.

I will add that Dallas has a lot of fair weather fans, far more than the Eagles.

The Eagles are favorites to win the NFC and the SB so it does not surprise me that they are getting large numbers of fans at their practices.

If you are a Eagles fan than you will remember the mass exodus of fans in the fourth quarter of the second game of last years season when McNabb couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. That was just after two years in a row of him taking the team to the Championship game and I remember after that all the fair weather fans started screaming for McNabbs head saying he was overrated and cut his ass. All this after 2 bad games!!! Yeah Loyal.

Obviously, when team is winning a lot of games, their fan base will grow- it's the nature of things (see Bucs a couple years aqgo, Rams a couple years before that, etc.), but it's not as though the Eagles fans haven't been there all along.

As for a lot of them being former Cowboys fans- that's an indictment of Dallas backers, not the Birds (though I'm not sure if that statement is true).

How classic is that????

Something is reported by the Eagles after being at camp and somehow getting a headcount.

A skins fan reads it, doesn't like that it is a pro-Eagles report, and surmises that the count is inaccurate without any facts, an article that counters it, or being there.

While I wasn't one of the guys calling for Mcnabb's head, how does that make someone a bandwagon fan? Maybe a bandwagon Mcnabb fan, but if it was a bandwagon Eagles fan they wouldn't have been saying anything.

And I was at the game you are attempting to speak of without any knowledge of that game- it did not empty out until there was about 2 minutes left in a game that was out of reach.

I suppose watching the final 2 minutes of a blowout loss is worth another 60 minutes in a traffic jam?

You are right I was not at the game. I am only going by the booing I heard over the telecast and the shots of large numbers of fans heading for their cars at the middle of the fouth quarter. I also heard from friends of mine that were at the game (Eagles fans) who said it was ugly with all the fans calling for McNabbs head. The point was that showing up and following a team when it is on top is easy. It is what makes football fun. Following a team through thick and thin is the sign of a fan. It is always not as fun but when it is good it is great. I have a hard time taking Eagles fans seriously right now because it is easy for them. Wait until you have a couple of loosing seasons and if you come back for more, then I will take you seriously.

Fred....I'm sure that since the membership here has gone from 6,000 to 16,000 since Gibbs returned all 10,000 souls have a story like your own that would show they were fans all along and are not in your words "fair weather fans." True Skin's fans have not enjoyed success yet but now with Gibbs there's hope that that light at the end of the tunnel isn't just a train coming the other way. Since you have taken it upon yourself to judge the quality of the hordes of fans showing interest in the Eagles who likely have busy lives also and are just now getting the time to manifest their interest I'm wondering if you'd like to apply the same litmus test to all the Skin's fans who are new to this site.

Oh, so you mean the expansion Eagle's fans should take a hint from the veteran Skins fans on how to hang in there with the team?

Please, tell that to the 30K seats available in your own stadium for Eagles fans to puchase for their annual trip down.

I'm not saying the Skins don't have good fans, cause they do, but I'm certainly not going to be educated by a "real fan" on the subject.

This isn't going to turn to an "Attendance argument" is it? The kings of attendance is? Now to the fact that the stadium wasn't "actually" as full as reported. Well the Skins weren't "Actually" winning. Gibbs will change those "Actual": figures......you think?

Poco,

I was commenting about my situation only and not the rest of the members. If they want to comment that is up to them.

That said, yes, a lot of people probably signed up to this site and attend training camp because of Gibbs return.

The original post discusses Eagles fans at their training camp. I was commenting on the initial thread posted by an Eagle fan. Every team has bandwagon fans.
