Donte Stallworth

I think the Redskins ARE going to take a receiver in round 1 for the second year in a row. And I think Spurrier will take whoever is left between Caldwell and Gaffney when pick #18 comes up.

maybe that is not the best route or the most enlightened, but Spurrier is convinced his training of a player makes that player come with a significant premium over other players that seem to have more physical talent.

Caldwell showed well at the combine while Gaffney did not, so perhaps we are looking more at Gaffney now as a realistic situation.

Stallworth is also interesting and Spurrier did mention him as being one of the top 3 or 4 wideouts this year.

But I agree, why take a Vol when a luscious Gator is there for the asking?

4.46? Dude, he ran a 4.26 .. that's blazing fast .. would have been more impressive at the combine, though. I am a big lelie fan and I hope there is more of a chance he will drop with guys like Stallworth and Javon Walker running big time numbers .. although it is unlikely.

According to Len P., Hermes Stallworth was clocked by one scout as running a 4.19. 39 inch verticle jump and a 17 rep 225 bench. He stand 6' 198 and according to the article on KFFL, pushed himself up to possibly the #1 wr in the draft. Whoa.

Doesn't look like it G.B., I know this is Len P we are talking about here, but he said the warp capable lad blew the scouts away at his work out. Quotes one vet scout as saying that was one of the greatest shows he's seen in 20 years.

Here's the pasquarelli article. Notice the Vinny Cerrato quote.

quote:
For a guy who entered the draft as an underclassman, changed his mind, then went back into the NFL lottery again when the NCAA denied him the opportunity to return to school, former University of Tennessee wide receiver Donte Stallworth demonstrated no such hesitation on Wednesday.

Working out for league scouts in Knoxville, Tenn., the junior receiver put on a display that one veteran talent evaluator termed "one of the greatest shows" he had seen in 20-plus seasons of handling pre-draft auditions. Stallworth established himself not only as a certain-first round pick, but also as the likely No. 1 prospect in a deep wide receiver talent pool.

"I surprised even myself on a few things," said Stallworth. "But I knew that I could have this kind of a day if I was 'on,' believe me. I feel pretty good about things now."

And he should.

Stallworth, who did not work out at the recent combine sessions in Indianapolis, checked in at 6 feet and 198 pounds. Running with a sprained ankle he suffered last Friday, he was clocked at between 4.23 and 4.26 seconds in the 40-yard sprint by four scouts surveyed by ESPN.com. The scout for one club had him at a mind-boggling 4.18 seconds running on the Pro Turf surface.

None of the other wide receiver prospects have been close to those times. Ashley Lelie of the University of Hawaii is said to have run in the 4.2s during training sessions in Atlanta, but has not yet run for NFL scouts. Stallworth has certainly set a standard that will be difficult to match.

"I actually looked at my (stop)watch twice, just to make sure it wasn't broken," said Washington Redskins personnel director Vinny Cerrato of Stallworth's blistering 40-yard times.

In addition to his impressive speed, Stallworth had a 39-inch vertical jump and a long jump of 10 feet, 9 inches. He did 17 "repetitions" in the bench press at the standard 225-pound weight. That was as many "reps" as Vols defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth did on Wednesday afternoon.

Although the ankle injury hampered Stallworth a bit in the position drills, he caught the ball well and showed enough explosiveness in and out of his cuts to thoroughly impress the scouts

If Lelie or Stallworth dropped to us .. we should be happy (IF we're going WR). No WAY he drops to the second round. No way he dropped to the second round before his workouts. I'd rather have Lelie, but apparantly stallworth was looking great in receiving drills, too.

Stallworth seems like an amazing athlete, but is he also a good football player? I had my fill of athletes posing as football players(Westbrook).

Does anyone know how he played at Tennessee? I have a feeling Spurrier may take him in the first round if he's available.

from draftbook.com

Great Blue North
The NCAA has denied the appeal of Tennessee junior WR Donte' Stallworth to have his eligibility restored. Stallworth was declared ineligible after submitting his name to the 2002 draft even though he rescinded the application before the deadline for entries was up. Stallworth could appeal the decision to a higher NCAA panel, but will talk with his family before he makes any decision. If he is going to have to go into the 2002 NFL draft, where he would possibly be the top-rated WR in what is weak receiver class, Stallworth will not want to waste much more time with the Indinaapolis combines coming up in just a month.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TSN
Receiver Donte Stallworth's decision to turn pro early surprised some who think his draft chances would be better next year. Stallworth missed three games early this season with a broken wrist but finished the season with his best statistics yet -- 41 catches for 821 yards and 10 touchdowns.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt Gambill
APSS has learned that it now appears Stallworth is set to declare himself elegible for the 2002 draft. That would be a mistake as he'd likely be a late second round pick at best, but likely a 3rd, maybe even fourth rounder.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TFY
Lastly, a source we spoke with about the Donte Stallworth situation told us one big problem seems to be immediately after he declared for the draft he went out and accepted a dinner from big-time agent Jimmy Sexton, which is a violation of NCAA rules.

To our minds the most exciting prospect on offense is receiver junior Donte' Stallworth. A speedster that consistently gets downfield separation, Stallworth has the hands, body control and eye-hand coordination to take the next step up and be an early draft choice over the next two years depending on what decision he makes. Stallworth needs a little more consistency and to get more involved in the action but with Cedrick Wilson graduating to the NFL, that should not be a problem.

The Good: Speedster that has shown flashes and needs to bring it all together on a consistent basis. Suffered a wrist injury the first game of the year, which required surgery and could be out till November. Fast, beats opponents down the field and shows great adjustment when catching the pass running full tilt. Times and anticipates his deep receptions well, good vertical leap and solid hands. Reads defenses, makes himself an available target and nice overall awareness. Nice vertical leap and goes up in a crowd to make the difficult catch. The Bad: Needed to improve his route running, consistency and overall involvement in the offense. The Skinny: Could've been a high pick had he a big junior campaign and left for the draft but that must be rethought as of now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike Detillier
The NCAA has ruled that Donte Stallworth can't come back to Tennessee. If he chooses not to try and appeal the decision, he will be an early pick and probably in Round 1. He has good size and outstanding foot speed for a receiver. Now he is a bit inconsistent catching the ball and he has spent some down time due to injuries and that would be the only reason I see that he wouldn't go in Round 1. I see Stallworth going in the opening Round and probably in the middle of Round One.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rob "Boomer" Rang
Senior Eric Parker (5'11, 175, #80) has enough skills in the past to get a shot, but has been essentially relegated to the bench due to the incredible play of underclassmen Kelley Washington and Donte' Stallworth. Stallworth (6'2, 189, #4), the bigger playmaker, but less consistent of the two, finally began to show his true form and averaged 20 YPC!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Football Corner
Stallworth is solid WR with nice speed. He shows nice hands, runs solid routes, and has the ability to burn a team deep. He does a nice job of catching the football with his hands and then creates after the catch. He has the athletic ability and size to beat most corners one-on-one. A true playmaker that is coming off of some injuries. If he can stay healthy, he could be a big time NFL wide receiver.

Should be noted that SS called up Phil Fulmer to give him the heads up that he was coming to UT to check out Volunteers . . . maybe Stallworth is one of them?

4.26? That's ridiculous. I know everyone think SS is biased to Gators, but if the numbers are legit and he doesn't have hands of stone...whoa.

I believe hands down we have to take Stallworth, but I am also a Vols fan. You know how hard this is for me to have enemy number 1 the head coach of my beloved Skins
but if we win I could learn to deal with it

Apparently Gaffney redeemed himself at Florida's Pro Day.
http://nfldraft.theinsiders.com/2/40096.html

You just can't put too much stock in any single workout. Go to the video tape, my friend. That's where most of the real answers are.

Also, note that Alex Brown worked out as a linebacker. His stock is still plummeting. I don't think Spurrier considers him, unless he's still on the board in, say, like the 5th round. He might be worth a flyer, then.

I don't think that this kid Stallworth will be available at 18th. and up until today he jumped to the #1 wr spot. We'll have to wait until Lelie and Bryant run in their workouts.

I'm still not sold on Gaffney.
