Giants Release Mitchell, Levens

The Associated Press

Wednesday, February 25, 2004; 5:59 PM

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Brian Mitchell, the NFL's career leader in total yardage, was released Wednesday by the New York Giants along with running back Dorsey Levens.

The Giants also re-signed defensive end Keith Washington, who like Mitchell and Levens, was signed as a free agent last spring.

Mitchell and Levens were supposed to be two of the final ingredients that led the Giants to a Super Bowl run last season.

Instead, they struggled in a season in which the team finished with a 4-12 record.

Coach Jim Fassel was fired and Tom Coughlin was hired to replace him.

Mitchell, who will turn 36 in August, had one of the worst seasons of his 14-year career. His 20.3-yard average on kickoff returns was 19th in the NFC, and his 5.3-yard average on punt returns was 14th in the conference.

Mitchell, who also played as a third-down specialist, caught four passes for 38 yards and had four rushing attempts for 20 yards, including a one-yard touchdown in the season-opening victory over St. Louis.

He is the NFL's career leader in return yardage and also in total yards with 23,330, 213 more yards than Jerry Rice. Mitchell holds 10 NFL records and has played in 209 consecutive games, the league's longest active streak.

Levens, who was supposed to solve the Giants' short-yardage problems after being signed in April, gained 197 yards and scored three touchdowns on 68 carries. He also caught five passes for 39 yards in 11 games.

Washington, who will be entering his 10th season, had 27 tackles in 14 games. He scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery in the season finale against the NFC champion Carolina Panthers.

Mitchell would never be resigned after all the statements he's made about Snyder. He refuses to call him Mr. Snyder. He calls him Dan all the time as a blatant sign of disrespect. I don't care if you are older than oyur boss, if he signs your check you should give him a title to go along with his name, if you want to keep that job.

I would never take Mitchell back. He did great things for us. But the keyword is "did". He is too slow, too old, and needs to wear some smaller shoulder pads. those things are huge. i guess he is scared of getting torn up with his age an all. that is an awful comment to even consider him returning to the redskins.

Hey, I dont care how old he is, he is one of the only former Gibbs redskin around, unless you count Keenan McCardell who was on the injured reserve in 91. I think itd be great to have him sign one last season with the skins to retire as one. He may not care what happened to the team now that Gibbs and some old coaches are back.

not surprising. Levens should have been out of the league and Brian Mitchell sure did age fast since his productive '02 season, eh? :)

Unfortunately, this makes Andy Reid look good for not re-signing them for more than the vet minimum that he offered. Another smart personnel move by Reid, and not re-signing Hugh Douglas is looking like the right move as well.

What's going to happen this year? 4 key players leaving and making the team weaker is one argument. The positive argument is that the Eagles never won anything with them anyway, so it's time to change. Then again, if they don't spend much of their available cap money, they'll hit the skids real quick this season.

If Thrash and Pinkston are the starting WRs in September, I don't know if I can watch.

Maybe they'll sign Levens to replace Staley.
