Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot has shown toughness and resiliency to go along with his strong play this season—and he's starting to get rewarded for his efforts. A week after being named the Ed Block Courage Award winner by the Redskins, Smoot won the Quarterback Club Redskins Player of the Year Award Tuesday night.

Smoot beat out fellow cornerback Champ Bailey, wide receiver Laveranues Coles, kicker John Hall and quarterback Patrick Ramsey for the honor. Recent winners of the award include Daryl Gardener (2002), LaVar Arrington (2001) and Bailey (2000).

"It's a privilege to receive this award, considering the group of guys we have on this team," Smoot said. "It means a lot, just to be the heart and soul of a team like this. It's not because I played any better than any of the other players, it's because I think I helped carry the heart and soul of the team this year."

This season, Smoot has started 12 of 13 games and has emerged as one of the team’s vocal leaders in just his third NFL season.

He has 51 tackles and three interceptions, tied for the team lead (with safeties Matt Bowen and Ifeanyi Ohalete). If Smoot leads the defense in interceptions, it would be the first time in team history that a Redskins player has done so in three consecutive seasons.

Smoot suffered a bruised sternum in Week 6 against Tampa Bay and was forced to sit out the following game. After the team’s bye, he made a heroic effort coming back for the Week 9 Dallas game to record six tackles.

A week later against Seattle, Smoot’s interception of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck came with 39 seconds remaining, clinching a Redskins win.

The Quarterback Club's annual dinner and awards presentation was held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.

This just goes to prove that Smoot is a better man than the classless jerk who used to wear #21. It's funny how Smoot and Arrington are similar here. Arrington picked the same number of another classless jerk when he was a rookie. One can only hope that Smoot and Arrington get as good as Sanders and Taylor, but in the game of life they are both way ahead. Cheers Fred!!
