The Blue Devils are led by interim coach Ted Roof, who is a candidate to stay after snapping the program's streak of 30 straight ACC losses. Redskins coach Steve Spurrier, who coached Duke from 1987 to 1989, apparently recommended Jackson, whose profile rose following the Nov. 9 win over Seattle. In that game Jackson called plays, and the night before he gave an inspirational speech to the team. Jackson, arriving at Redskin Park last night wearing a suit, declined to say where he had been. Spurrier acknowledged Jackson had been at an interview but wouldn't say where. A team source later confirmed it was Duke. A message to the Duke public relations office was not returned, and Jackson did not return a later message. Taking over Duke would be a huge challenge. The Blue Devils are a perennial ACC doormat, posting one winning season (1994) since Spurrier left for Florida. Roof's 2-3 record after replacing Carl Franks was considered a major achievement. Franks was fired Oct. 19, a day after his team trailed Wake Forest 42-0 at halftime. Roof, the defensive coordinator, was promoted to interim coach. It is unclear whether any other candidates exist. With Washington, Jackson's profile rose rapidly. He was one of two assistant coaches held over when Spurrier replaced Marty Schottenheimer in 2002, and at the end of the season Spurrier elevated Jackson to offensive coordinator. Then, after four straight losses this season, Jackson was given play-calling duties. Success in that endeavor was mixed. Against Seattle, the Redskins generated 379 yards and 27 points, but in a loss the following week at Carolina, the unit had 41 yards in the first half and failed to convert turnovers into points. Spurrier reassumed play-calling duties last week. Fourteen years in the college ranks preceded Jackson's hiring by the Redskins in 2001, when Schottenheimer made him running backs coach. Jackson spent 1997 to 2000 as Southern California's offensive coordinator and 1996 as California's coordinator. More turnover in the already tenuous Skins coaching ranks. Removal of Spurrier's "buffer option" on offense. Loss of the one guy we keep hearing is the "fiery guy on the sidelines" who gets called on occasionally to whip up a frenzy. Loss of the guy in charge, apparently, of coaching up our running backs to block. Hmm. Opening a slot for another offensive coach to come aboard. As what? Offensive coordinator? Assistant OC? Of course, it makes a little more sense if you factor in the theory that Spurrier will resign after the season, Snyder is choosing our starting QB, and Snyder's office is actually a wormhole to the ninth circle of hell -- but I can't prove there aren't leprechauns, either. Dr. D Posted November 26, 2003 Share Posted November 26, 2003 We have already seen enough clue to know there will again be tremendous turnover with the assistants...we just don't know if there will be a change at the top...or an addition like we need (GM).. Jackson as a head coach is a great idea for him as well as Duke(or anywhere else for that matter) it is the next logical step for him. bulldog Posted November 26, 2003 Share Posted November 26, 2003 Not that I am not pleased for Jackson that he might get a HC job, but he is really the only Redskins assistant coach that seems to have any stones in his pockets this team has got to upgrade the coaching on the OL and the DB's. there has been little improvement at these spots. ditto for special teams, where we are now just grateful that they are mediocre after years of being downright horrid :laugh: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
