Hauss
Armstead: 'There's a Lot of Talent Here'
03/28/2002

By Jason Gould
Editor, Redskins.com
After two and a half days of Steve Spurrier's first mini-camp, new linebacker Jessie Armstead said he's beginning to feel at home in the burgundy and gold.

"It feels really good to be a Redskin, to be around this new group of guys," Armstead said Thursday. "They've accepted me, and now it's time for me to work really hard to get ready to go out there and do it on the field, in the real games."

The five-time Pro Bowler said the transition from the Giants to the Redskins has been a smooth one.

"You have to go through an adjustment period," Armstead said. "Obviously, the first day of mini-camp was the hardest. You play against these guys, and now all of a sudden, they're your teammates. There's a lot of talent here, with this defense. I want to come in and contribute."

Added Armstead: "It's a good atmosphere on this team. Everybody's really excited. But at the same time it's a long offseason, and you have to learn to roll through it as you get yourself prepared for the upcoming season."

In other news from Redskin Park on Thursday, the team announced the signing of Carl Powell. Powell, a 6-2, 272-pound defensive lineman, played the 2001 season with the Chicago Bears, recording nine tackles (eight solo).

A one-time fifth-round draft choice out of the Louisville, Powell has played in the NFL with Baltimore and Indianapolis. Reaganaut
To be frank, the LESS I hear from him the more I will like him because he has the potential to be a bad influence on the team if the offense sputters this year and he makes his feelings public like he has done in New York. Hopefully Bruce Smith and Darrell Green will convince Armstead to follow their lead instead of his own.

Teams that have players who make their feelings known in public with impunity are littered all over the landscape: Minnesota, Baltimore, the Giants... A few loudmouths like a Chris Carter, Shannon Sharpe, or a Jesse Armstead can really piss off a team in the locker room.

Lavar Arrington said it best last year when he said words to the effect "if the offense can only score three points then we need to hold their offense to less than three points." This is good sportsmanship and a team comment that I think a less classy Armstead would probably choke on if he tried to say it.

I'm just observing that a guy who rips his former team and players probably LIKES to rip people and it's only a matter of time before something happens that ticks him off at the Redskins. I hope all works out and he is happy, but if things don't go smoothly on the offensive side look for Armstead to pour gasoline on the fire. bulldog
Armstead does have a mouth. But so did Gary Clark and Wilber Marshall.

Sometimes in the past the Redskins have been a team without much fire on the field.

Perhaps now with Jessie AND LaVar patrolling the defense we will get up for and stuff teams like Dallas and not let them get both an emotional and physical edge on us as has happened in the past. NavyDave
I hope we dont go thru that kind of turmoil because Jessie will go thru what JuWann Howard still suffers at MCI.

If we had to we have our starting twelve on defense in place already and its talented however if we can draft one of the top DTs I'm gonna be stoked. Darth Tater
I think most fans really won't care about his or any of our player's mouth if we win.

bulldog
The Giants DID have an awful offense the year that Armstead, Strahan and others spoke out.

If anything it was a learning experience for Jim Fassel who had left the defense too much on its own and not taken control of the ENTIRE football team.

Even though he is an offensive coach by background, Fassel is now much more involved in planning on the other side of the ball.

he has learned his lesson about how a team can become split when one unit seems favored by the coach and yet continues to underperform.
