China
Pennsylvania priest arrested, accused of possessing child porn The Rev. Bartley Sorensen, 62, pastor of St. John Fisher Church in Churchill, Pennsylvania, was arraigned on charges of possession of child pornography, a third-degree felony, according to the Diocese of Pittsburgh. He was being held on Sunday in the Allegheny County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond, jail officials said. Sorensen was arrested after a church employee walked into the rectory on Friday and saw Sorensen viewing a computer image of a young boy naked from the waist down, with the words "Hottie Boys" on the screen, police said. She alerted diocesan officials, who immediately contacted police. Allegheny County detectives found pornographic images of young boys on his computer, police said. During an interview, Sorensen admitted to possessing at least 100 pornographic pictures of children, police said. He has not been charged with abusing children. Accusations of child abuse and sexual impropriety against Catholic clergy in the United States have rocked the Catholic Church since 2002, and the church has paid out some $2 billion in settlements to abuse victims. TimmySmith
But I still don't give the Catholic Church a pass, simply because I don't think even THEY have fully recognized this yet. The screening process for the priesthood needs some radical and very conspicuous change.Won't happen. The Church is desperate for priests, and would never dissuade anyone form the calling. The only hope is vigilance against child abuse, which may keep the pedophiles from applying for the seminary in the first place.

stevenaa
I find it interesting that the Penn State scandal is so simlar to what's transpired in the RCC. Molestation swept under the rug, so to speak.
China
Father Benedict Groeschel, American Friar, Claims Teens Seduce Priests In Some Sex Abuse Cases In a recent interview with the National Catholic Register, Father Benedict Groeschel, of the conservative Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, said that teens act as seducers in some sexual abuse cases involving priests. It's been close to decade since an investigation into clergy sex abuse cases by The Boston Globe unearthed a shocking scandal and cover-up that rocked the foundations of the Catholic Church in the U.S. and around the world. Ten years may have passed, but the wounds have yet to fully heal in America, especially in light of the recent Penn State allegations, as well as the trial of Monsignor William Lynn, former secretary for the clergy in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. In light of this, the recent comments by Groeschel seem both puzzling and jarringly out of step with current sentiments. In an interview with the National Catholic Register posted this week, Groeschel was asked about his work with the very conservative Friars of the Renewal, a breakaway order he founded 25 years ago. The conversation took an interesting turn, however, when the editor asked about the 78-year-old's work with sexual abuse perpetrators. "People have this picture in their minds of a person planning to — a psychopath," Groeschel said. "But that’s not the case. Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster — 14, 16, 18 — is the seducer." Corcaigh
A fine example of believing anything no matter how ridiculous, if it means not challenging something you hold dear.
Rocky21
So children are seducing the priests? That's similar to the rape victim dressed sexy so it's her fault explanation. Good grief.
edgun88
I am Catholic, and I think that priests should be allowed to marry. It will help somewhat to get rid of the pedophile nutcases. Of course it will never completely go away, but it can be greatly helped.
