tr1 might have been right all along about DeMarcus Ware...

For seven straight years at least one OLB in Wade Phillips' scheme has produced double-digit sacks, including Shawne Merriman in San Diego. OLBs in Phillips' 3-4 defense since 2004:

Player Team Year Sacks

Steve Foley Chargers 2004 10

Shawne Merriman Chargers 2005 10

Shawne Merriman Chargers 2006 17.5

Shaun Phillips Chargers 2006 11.5

Greg Ellis Cowboys 2007 12.5

DeMarcus Ware Cowboys 2007 14

DeMarcus Ware Cowboys 2008 20

DeMarcus Ware Cowboys 2009 11

DeMarcus Ware Cowboys 2010 15.5

The key is that Williams won't have to worry about dropping into coverage or doing anything else that involves rushing the passer.

"He's coming off the corner all the time," Phillips said. "In our system, there's no way to change that. In some 3-4 systems, they can game plan you where the guy has to drop. In our system, it's never been that way. We can make him rush every down if we want to."

Every player, to some extent, benefits from the scheme they play in. But it's not like you can just plug anyone in there and get ~15 sacks a season or every team would have a guy like that.

Sure, it's not like it's just anyone...but Wade thinks Merriman, Where and Williams are about equal...which means, they're good players who 'star' in that scheme.

Pretty much what I've said all along.

A couple interesting stats:

Brian Orakpo, in his first two years, had exactly the same number of sacks at Ware in his first two seasons. In Ware's third season, Phillips took over, and Ware's sack totals took off. However, in Ware's first two seasons, Phillips was the DC in San Diego, and Shawne Merriman 27 sacks in those two seasons. In the four seasons since Phillips left, Merriman had 16.5 sacks, compared to Ware's 60.5 Since 2006, a Wade Phillips-coached player has led the league in sacks 3 of the 5 years. But it's not the system

A couple predictions for this year...

Orakpo has at least 12 sacks

Ware has at most 12 sacks

Mario Williams leads the league in sacks

so you are pretty much saying that Orakpo will have more sacks than Ware. Would you like to put a wager on that?
