Wild West
Who is on your free agency wish list for the Redskins? For me: Antonio Bryant, WR - reliable #2 WR Rob Sims, G - best UFA guard Eugene Amano, G/C - versatile Ben Hamilton, G - depth, knows zone blocking Chester Pitts, G - depth, knows zone blocking Karlos Dansby, LB - ILB Julius Peppers, DE/OLB - and send Carter packing Vince Wilfork, NT - needed for 3-4 Darren Sharper, FS - ballhawk, would allow Landry to move to SS Obviously, we won't be able to get all of those guys, but if we can get a few of them they will improve our team. Also, there are a ton of RFAs this year. There are several that I think we should consider going after if they are tendered with low compensation (or not tendered at all). Some examples: Lawrence Vickers, FB Brandon Marshall, WR Kevin Walter, WR Almost any tackle (Brown, Gaither, McNeil, Clabo, Colon, Johnson, Penn, etc.) Any of the great guards (Evans, Mankins, Yanda, Dahl, Kuper, etc) Jason Spitz (C/G) Here is a list of the offensive free agents available (I couldn't find an updated no CBA list for defense, if someone else wants to post one that would be great!) S.T.real,lights,out
I would really like to get Wilfork. But he's going to be major $$. And we just spent a ton of money on Al so i dont see us doing that again.
SkinsReturn2Glory
And everyone on this board is under the impression we can sign all sorts of offensive linemen and draft Bradford and everything is all good. Wild West
Why? I don't understand this type of post. Why can't we go QB at 4 and draft o-line with our remaining picks? Why do some people think that if you go QB at 4 that you are disregarding the o-line? Exactly. Besides, it looks like we can pick up a few guards in free agency, so if we can draft a tackle or two in rounds 2 and later and maybe a center we'll be set. There's also the possibility that some of those RFAs will not be tendered, or will be tendered low enough to make it worth pursuing them.

I don't see the money as a problem as long as the cap is gone and a few guys are cut. As for the post above, I think it's very clear we need to draft a tackle. It looks like there are a few guards available that would do the trick and Rabach/Lictenberg(something like that) should hold up at center. Drafting Bradford and going tackle 2nd and maybe 4th wouldn't be the end of the world.

Sure, they'll probably destroy offensive lines (if they both stay healthy) but what happens when, after we're paying both Albert and Wilfork tons of money, the salary cap comes back. That's going to leave us in a ton of trouble. This is the mentality that Vinny Cerrato had and people castrated him for it. I'm beginning to see that most people wanted Vinny gone because all they wanted was a scape goat... Seems most around here want to see us continue to do the same ol... John Lydon
To the OP: Why would you want to bring in another has been in Julius Peppers and get rid of Carter? That makes no sense. Redskinzfan30
That includes Wilfork AND Peppers. There's zero need for either of them. There is a need for Wilfork if we switch to a 3-4. We currently don't have a player that can play NT and it would save us from spending a draft pick on one. If we don't and we stick with a 4-3 then I agree there is no need for Wilfork. I guess it makes more sense to keep Carter if he can make the transition, but he didn't do well in San Francisco at all. Peppers wants to play in the 3-4, he's more talented than Carter, and he's more athletic to play in space/coverage. Besides, if we can move carter for a draft pick and pick up Peppers in free agency without giving up picks, it's a win-win IMO.

No, there's not. Not when you've tied as much money up in Albert Haynesworth as we have. If we didn't have Haynesworth, I'd agree. But we do. We'll have to have someone as a cheaper option to play that position if we're serious about making the switch. There are more players in the NFL/entering the NFL that can play the nose position. We don't NEED a big name to do it. But, I suppose that the (recent) Redskin way.
RedskinsTime
Am I missing something with the whole Haynesworth at NT saga? It seems to me that he's perfect for that position. He's the strongest player in the league, perfect for clogging the middle of the field. Yeah, his sack numbers would go way down, but he's usually double teamed as it is in the 4-3. The only argument against it I've seen is that Fat Al previously said he doesn't want to play in a 3-4, which really doesn't matter.

I also don't think we're making the full blown switch to the 3-4 (yet). If we only do it for a percentage of snaps, I don't see why we couldn't use him there or that he'd even be that upset about it. Financially I'll agree to that it's not the best decision most likely. Saying no need is downright stupid. Vinny's problem with the cap was signing guys like ARE and Lloyd (or guys getting too old Jansen/Samuels/Thomas) to huge contracts and then extending the problems by pushing the problems into the future to save a few bucks each year. Haynesworth is actually one of their smarter "cap contracts" if they don't restructure. His year 5 cap number would be 34 million, but his release fee was 5 million. His contract will end up being about 4/48. If we got Wilfork for the same I would be happy. Samuels, if he retires, would have cost us a cap hit of 14+ million this year, ARE 10 million, Thomas 6 million, Portis 8.5 million... They have been proving for years that they are slowing down, yet this is their cap number? In three years if the cap is back and Haynesworth is a 5 million hit, it wouldn't be all that Vinny like. EDIT: For the record I don't want Peppers, I don't see the need for him. Also, I'd rather keep the 4-3 at least for now so we can focus on the offense this season. If we're hell bent on the 3-4 then some changes must be made.

That would make a Haynesworth like deal a no go (and I think there is a % limit on how much the signing bonus is as well). I remember reading something to that degree, but don't have a link. CG
I'd love to pick up a tackle or a G. I seriously doubt that any of those LTs that we'd really want (Brown, McNeil etc) won't be tendered. We may have a legit shot at servicable RT, which to me is a bigger need right now anyway. Levi Jones at LT >>> Stephon Heyer at RT The FA market for Centers looks AWFUL. If we go with a QB in the 1st, we really need to use that 2nd to grab an LT type player or an elite RG and use the 4th on a Center and/or tender Rabach for another season. This is really not a great time to have a ton of needs on the OL and be looking at a QB at the same time with so few picks. We've got to stay patient with this team and give them a couple of years to get stuff together.

KDawg
It's called a wish list for a reason. We're switching to a 3-4 and NT is the hardest postion to fill. Financially I'll agree to that it's not the best decision most likely. Saying no need is downright stupid. Calling me stupid is a bit on the immature side, don't you think? But go ahead and think that way. I know alot about this game. There is NO NEED to sign a big name player to play NT. There are many players in this league who can play the position and at this point there is nothing saying we're going to the 34 permanently. So it's all speculation that we'd even need one at all. So it's not stupid in the least to say there's no need. There's plenty of reasons why signing Wilfork is a no need situation. Finding a nose tackle is a need situation... should we make the perma-switch and IF Haynesworth won't do it. In three years if the cap is back and Haynesworth is a 5 million hit, it wouldn't be all that Vinny like. So... You're advocating signing almost an Albert Haynesworth clone and then releasing Albert Haynesworth? Wilfork is 5 months younger than Albert. Why would releasing AH be the answer? You can't tie up that much money in two defensive players who are clones of one another. And what happens if they both miss time? Our depth is severely hampered. I don't know about you, but I'd like to see what we can do without signing guys who are getting on the older side to huge contracts for once. *shrug*
